LET THE GREAT 8 BEGIN!
Don't forget the Great 8 Dance is Friday, May 16, from
7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Lanier in the cafeteria. Doors
will open at 6:30 p.m. for registration. Students that are
not within dress code will not be allowed into the dance.
The Great 8 Field Trip to Dave & Busters is
Wednesday, May 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The
buses will depart Lanier at 9:30 a.m. and return at 2:30
p.m. Students will receive their 8th grade class T-shirt
the morning of the field trip. You must wear your T-shirt
on the field trip.
On the last day of school, Thursday, May 29, 8 graders
will be dismissed after the Great 8 Pup Award
Ceremony to go home. Students will be released to a
parent. If they are not picked up by 1:00 p.m. they will be
taken to the cafeteria for lunch and resume their regular
schedule for the day.

Lanier Parents,
We had a great turnout at our final PTO General
Meeting of the year and VIPS Breakfast this morning. A
huge thank you to Tony Rodriguez for sponsoring the
VIPS breakfast this morning: you amaze us!
To all those volunteers at the Teacher Appreciation
luncheon and to Kristine Carroll, for spearheading these
efforts this year: thank you all, for being such a
supportive, involved group!
A couple of reminders from the PTO:
• The last Lanier Spirit Night of the year is on May 20
at Chick Fil A (SW Fwy) from 4 – 8pm. Just mention
you are supporting Lanier Middle School's Spirit
Night. Dinner can be Drive-Thru or Dine-in!

The Great 8 Breakfast & Yearbook Signing is
Thursday, May 29, from 8:45 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at
Lanier in the cafeteria.
The Great 8 Pup Award Ceremony is Thursday, May
29, from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Lanier in the
auditorium. All 8th graders and 8th grade teachers are
invited to the ceremony. Parents of the award winning
students are invited. We will recognize IB winners,
Reliant (NRG) student recognition, Lanier awards, etc.

LANIER DEBATERS FINAL TOURNAMENT A
SMASHING SUCCESS!
At the Oak Ridge Tournament last weekend, Lanier’s
debaters put a massive beatdown on 10 other middle
schools and added a great exclamation point to a
fantastic season. It was an emotional evening as the 8th
graders gave their traditional farewell speeches to the

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) of Lanier
Middle School is an honor organization whose purpose is
to recognize students who excel in academics as well as
leadership, citizenship, service, and character. This
organization is open to all 7th and 8th grade students who
maintain a grade point average of 3.7 (93) or above, an E
average in conduct, and have evidence of participation in
community service projects outside of Lanier.
Applications will be accepted for review by the NJHS

committee in the fall for 8 graders and the spring for 7
graders.

ALGEBRA 1 SUMMER CAMP!
To all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students thinking of taking
Algebra 1 next year--Lanier Middle School will be hosting
Algebra 1 Summer Camps. The camp is a four-day
course that provides students with the basic Algebra
concepts to start off and succeed in high school
Algebra 1. The camp covers algebraic concepts and
terminology used in Algebra, problem solving with
abstract concepts, use of technology to help solve
algebraic problems, understanding assessment system
used in high school Algebra, and study and time
management skills needed for abstract concepts. The
camp will use TI-84 graphing calculators along with
hands-on manipulatives to describe exponents, variables,
and number concepts.
The Algebra 1 Summer Camp at Lanier is available for
the following sessions:
o Session 1: July 21-24 (morning session: 8:3011:30 am; afternoon session: 12:30-3:30pm)
o Session 2: July 28-July 31 (afternoon session
only: 12:30-3:30pm)
o Session 3: August 4-7 (morning session: 8:3011:30 am; afternoon session: 12:30-3:30pm)
The cost is $125 per week for either a morning session or
afternoon session, or you can register for both the
morning and afternoon sessions for $200 per
week. Financial assistance is available.

NEW SUMMER CAMP!! To all 7th and 8th grade
students thinking of taking Geometry next year--Lanier
Middle School will be hosting a Geometry Summer Camp.
The camp is a four-day course that provides students with

high school Geometry. The camp will cover geometric

LADY PUP SPORTS CAMPS
Looking to sharpen those volleyball and basketball skills
over the summer? Lanier is hosting two, 4-day camps this
summer on campus. Girls’ basketball will be hosting the
first camp June 9-12 and volleyball will be the next week
June 16-19. Both camps will have a morning session from
7:30 – 12 noon and an all-day session from 7:30 –
5:00pm. The girls will work on conditioning, fundamentals
and show their skills off with games in the afternoon. The
cost is $180 for the morning session and $240 for the allday session. Spaces are limited. Registration forms are

7TH GRADE MATH CAMPS

To all students moving into the 7 grade, Lanier will be

hosting two different 7
grade math camps this

summer. The first camp will run from July 28 to July

31 2014. This camp is designed to help develop better
learning skills, acquire math study habits, refresh
concepts learned & improve an understanding of
math. Areas of study will include basic skill review
(operations with decimals & fractions), graphs & problem
solving.

The second camp runs from August 4 to August 7 ,
2014. This rigorous camp is intended for students that
th
did not struggle during their 6 grade year in math and
would like exposure to new concepts. This session is
intended to continue problem solving skills and enhance
math study habits. Areas of study will include: working
with pattern rules, rate of change, limits of numbers,
graphing, and extrapolation of information from
graphs. Student must get teacher recommendation to
enroll in this camp.

LEADERSHIP CAMP 2014
Leadership Camp 2014 will be the last week in July. The

dates are July 29 – July 31 or Aug 1 depending on
one vendor. The times are from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm each
day, and the students will need to bring a sack lunch each
day. Snacks and water will be provided. We will be
headed to Texas Rock Gym for team building and ice
breaker games, and will have former leaders and guest
speakers sharing their experiences and words of wisdom
to the new leaders. Cost will be between $100-$125,
depending on whether it’s a 3 or 4 day camp. Camp is not
required to be a leader next year, but requested. Camp is
a great way to meet your fellow leaders, learn new games
and activities and talk to former leaders who can share
what it is like to be a leader at Lanier. Scholarships are
available, too.
