Breakfast Club Program
In Week 3 of this term we started a Breakfast Club
Program at Cable Beach Primary. The Breakfast Club will
be run by the Australian Red Cross and will run from
Monday to Friday for the rest of the year. The purpose of
the Breakfast Club is to offer children a healthy start to
the day by providing them a nutritious breakfast, while
educating them about healthy eating habits and to assist
in developing the learning capacity of children in schools/
communities.
The Breakfast Club is run from 7:00 – 7:30 each morning
and is located in the demountable building behind the
canteen. The Breakfast Club is open to all students who
require breakfast.
Thank you to a wonderful bunch of dedicated mothers
who constantly donate their me to help provide
services and help raise money for our school through
the P&C, you all deserve a pat on the back. This small
bunch of women always put up their hands to help out,
you do not go un-noced so please accept a sincere
thankyou from me. The Fathers Day stall was more
about providing a opportunity for every child to
purchase a gi" for their father or close male carer and it
was wonderful to see so many eager children excited
about purchasing gi"s and their wonderful manners.
Some children even gave their spare money to other
children who didn't have any or not enough money to
purchase a gi", so nice to see such caring kids in our
school. We did raise $270 in the end.

Numeracy Week at Cable Beach Primary
Across the country last week, as well as here at Cable Beach Primary, schools took part in
Numeracy Week. We celebrated Maths in a big way across the whole school. We had a daily
Maths quiz question or a riddle such as “How many days of the week start with
T?” (ANSWER: 4 – Tuesday, Thursday, tomorrow and today.) Buddy classes, comprising of
a younger year group with an older year group, joined forces once during the week to work
on maths tasks together. Some buddy groups made fraction chickens together while others
estimated and counted drops of water onto coins. Each day there was also a fun activity
individual classes could do during the day. We had a Mintie wrapper ripping competition
where students ripped a Mintie wrapper making it as long as they could, measuring it and
perhaps graphing the results. Some students managed to rip their wrapper as long as 1.5m
long. On Thursday everyone in the school traced around their foot, measured it and we taped
these to the footpath heel to toe to see how
Numeracy Week Work in the front office
far they would go. We started our footprint
track outside the office and we made it all
the way around to Room 5.
It was fantastic to see and hear students
getting excited about Maths and having a
go at all the activities. Please pop into the
front office where we have displayed some
of our work and photos from the week.
I look forward to Numeracy Week 2015!

VISITING PIANIST: Last week we were very fortunate to
have world-renown Jazz pianist Dr Allan Zavod come to
visit us at school. He was brought to Broome by the
Shinju Committee and they kindly brought him here to
play for us. It was great to see some fantastic piano
playing and students got to ask him quite a lot of
questions about being a famous pianist. Thanks to Dr
Zavod and the Shinju Committee.

Dear parents and carers,
Crazy Hair and Free Dress Day
Next Thursday the Student Councillors are hosting a
Crazy Hair and Free Dress day to raise money for one of
their selected charities, The Royal Flying Doctors
Service. The children are encouraged to wear their hair
in a crazy style and dress as they wish. Please ask them
to bring along a gold coin donation.
The councillors researched the many, varied worthy
recipients and chose to raise funds to support UNICEF
and the RDFS this year. After this event next week, the
money raised will be split and representatives from each
of the charities will be invited along to an assembly next
term to receive their money.
Talent Show
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of
the students who participated in the Talent Show last
week. You can see some great photos on Page 1. The
Student Councillors organised this event and were
brilliantly supported by Mrs Deb Watkiss. I thought that
the show was entertaining and that the students who
performed were very courageous. It was great to show
case the amazing talent we have at Cable Beach.
Thanks Councillors and Mrs Watkiss!!
If any parent/carer would like a photo or video of your
child’s performance please send them along to Mrs
Watkiss with a USB memory stick or similar so we can
make a copy for you.
You are invited to our Big Breakfast and Open
Morning - Friday 19 September
Please make a note in your diary to keep an hour or two
free on the morning of September 19 from 7:15 for the
breakfast. This will be followed by an Open Morning in
classrooms. The classrooms will be opened and your
children will be able to share their learning so far this
year, with you. We will finish with a band concert in the
undercover area at 9am. We are looking forward to
seeing you there.

Interschool Athletics Carnival
On Wednesday and Friday of Week 6, Cable Beach took
a team of our best athletes to St Mary’s high school for
the West Kimberley Interschool Carnival. We had high
hopes of ending Roebuck’s recent dominance going into
the events and after the some outstanding jumping by
our competitors on the Wednesday we sat a very close
third going into the running and team games on Friday.
Friday saw our school start extremely well in the long
distance running events and begin to bridge the gap to sit
second overall going into the sprints. Our sprinters
continued to show great speed and determination to keep
us in touch with the leading school. The flag relays and
team games were fantastic events for our school with
everyone working together and our teams winning a large
number of these events which put us within striking
distance of the overall lead with just the relay’s to come.
Our relay teams battled hard all the way to the end but
we ended up a close second to Roebuck Primary once
again. The athletes that took part showed great
endeavour and sportsmanship on both days which was
noticed by a number of community members and other
school staff, in this our students should be proud as they
represented Cable Beach in such a fantastic manner.
There were a number of students who also put in
excellent individual performances on the days with them
winning Gold, Silver or Bronze
medals for being in the top 3
overall in their age groups
across all of the events (winners
listed below). We also had two
students who broke Interschool
Records on the day with Zahri
McCoy breaking the Year 6 Boys
100m sprint record and Lyle
Sibosado breaking the 400m,
200m and 75m Year 5 Boys records.
Overall Age Group Medallists
Year 7 Boys Silver – Seth Roberts
Year 7 Girls Bronze – Jess Henshaw
Year 6 Boys Silver – Zahri McCoy

Year 4 Boys Bronze – Lance Jungine
Year 4 Girls Silver – Jemeilah Morrison

PERTH GLORY WOMENS FOOTBALL VISIT
Collette McCallum, Samantha Kerr and Thia
Eastman from the Perth Glory Women Football team
came to the school to run clinics for some lucky
students. It was great to
see the enthusiasm the
students put into their
participation and having
women modelling success
in sport for our students.
“LIVING BLACK” VISIT
On Thursday 28 August Karla Grant, SBS
“Living Black” presenter and producer, and Liz
Deep-Jones, “Living Black” producer and
author, visited the school. Both ladies are
passionate about inspiring children to follow
their dreams so while filming the new series of
“Living Black” they are making time to meet
with students of local communities.
When they heard of the great positive
programs we have put in place to meet the
needs of our students they visited Cable
Beach Primary School. Liz spoke to on how
she wrote her book and Karla on her 20 years
as a journalist and the 11 years as the “Living
Black” presenter.
The students were then filmed for a segment
of the “Living Black” program singing songs in
the Yawuru language.
Ms Dalisa Pigram-Ross, Aboriginal Language
Teacher, spoke on the proud tradition the
school has in
being able to
offer Yawuru as
an option for its
students for the
past 17 years.
