2014 HAITIAN HERITAGE MONTH ESSAY CONTEST
The month of May has been designated as Haitian Heritage Month by The School District of Palm Beach County.
The Haitian Heritage Month Celebration Committee is organizing its yearly essay contest to commemorate the
month. Please distribute the attached entry form to teachers and students.



Students in grades 9-12 may participate
Deadline is Thursday, April 17, 2014
Theme: From an historical perspective, explain the setbacks that have hindered Haiti’s development
and suggest ways to overcome them.
A committee comprised of teachers and administrators will judge the essays based on a writing rubric to include
content, originality, spelling, and grammar. Essay contest winners will be notified the second week in May and
will attend the School Board Meeting on May 13, 2014, to accept the Board Proclamation for Haitian Heritage
Month along with their prizes and certificates. The winners will also participate in a panel presentation at one of
the Palm Beach County libraries.
Three prizes will be awarded:
 First Place:
1st Prize Certificate, and $250.00
 Second Place: 2nd Prize Certificate, and $150.00
 Third Place:
3rd Prize Certificate, and $100.00
