OCTOBER Edition Highly Inquisitive and Versatile Education Preparatory HIVE Prep Post HIVE EXPANSION UPDATE This year HIVE Prep has taken on new and exciting endeavors. We have expanded our charter to include middle school grades and as of this year we have 6th and 7th graders on campus! To accommodate for these new grades we opened a Primary Learning Center on the premises of IBB Church, which houses 100 kindergarteners. Furthermore, we hired 6 new teachers this year, as a result, the teacher to student ratio in for middle school is 1 to 9. Stay tuned for further details about our school’s growth! Miranda for being selected for teacher of the month. Her ability to engage students in math is truly a sight to see. Mrs. Miranda sets high standards for all students and subscribes to teaching math in a variety of ways. Furthermore, she is creative, and always willing to support the 3rd grade team. Mrs. Miranda also enjoys teaching social studies and science and frequently utilizes a variety of resources to foster a hands on learning environment. NO MORE FCAT! After a 16 year run, the FCAT has been retired and a new assessment will be taking its place this year. Florida recently transitioned from teaching the Next Generation Standards to the new Florida Standards which are Common Core aligned. The state test, therefore, has changed to assess the new standards. What should you expect? A lot more writing incorporated into the Reading/ Language Arts curriculum and exams. Grades 37 will have to read a variety of text samples and then craft a writing piece that analyzes the provided texts. In other words, writing is no longer a separate test given exclusively to 4th graders. Another thing that will be new to students is that most state assessments will be online, requiring typing skills. We are striving to prepare the students by offering a typing class and the use of tablets. Rest-assured that all of our textbooks are aligned to the new standards. We spent nearly $100,000 this year to update our textbook and intervention resources. *For further information and samples of the new test feel free to visit http://www.fsassessments.org Highly Inquisitive and Versatile Education Student of the Month of September Kindergarten: Vargas– Joel Villareal Freesland-Alessandra Rojas Olivera– Demi Beasley Delgado-Khamari Hall 1st grade: Ramos-Ethan Moreau Avila-Kyrstin Mesa Hernandez-Andrea Deleon 2nd grade: Schwarz-Brianna Fouquet Dupont-Maddison Leroy 3rd grade: Mas-Samantha Monterosa Iverson-Jenny Chinea Palin-Camila Cabello S. Tasty Cafeteria Food! This year we hired a new and improved catering company who is receiving raving reviews on the part of students and staff. We serve free breakfast in the mornings, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays it’s hot. The lunch items incorporate popular Miami dishes like Ropa Vieja, Chicken Criolle, and Arroz con Pollo! See our website for the daily menus. Parent’s keep in mind that volunteering in the cafeteria is a great way to earn volunteer hours. New Middle School Teachers! Our new teachers come with a range of experiences and expertise. A former principal, Mrs. Crawford opened her own middle school in Miami and is now teaching literature and language arts. Mr. Hardy has been teaching middle school level math for over a decade. The new writing teacher Mr. Bonilla, has years of experience teaching middle school and is also an independently contracted writer for the Miami Herald. Mr. McDonald is a biology major who also works at a lab at FIU, he therefore, teaches science. Mrs. Perez and Mrs. De La Torre also transitioned from elementary school to join the middle school team. PTO– Many parents have rallied together to establish an active Parent-Teacher Organization. Registration is open until the end of October. Forms can be found in the front office and the cost of dues is $6.00. See the bulletin board in the front hallway for more info. Please direct all questions to PTO President Jen Quintero at [email protected] HIVE Gym– Healthy students means less absenteeism and promotes functioning at their highest potential. Therefore, many teachers have volunteered to facilitate activities that will be held every third Saturday of the month for the remainder of the year. Annual membership cards will be on sale in the mornings for $35 and will cover all members of your family. We look forward to seeing our students, families, and staff get fit! HIVE Character Expectations At HIVE Prep we believe in educating a child holistically, which entails fostering character development. Each quarter we will focus on two character traits that are incorporated into our theme. Please help us reinforce these values at home. Theme: High Expectations Traits: Confidence, Risk-taking Look out for our character winners at the end of the quarter! Are you on Classdojo yet? Classdojo is a web-based behavior tracking system that allows for students and parents to monitor individual positive and negative behaviors in real time. Classdojo offers a mobile app that provides a notification each time a student receives or loses points. All teachers at HIVE Prep are utilizing the website with their students. If you haven’t done so yet, please activate the Classdojo account by entering in your child’s code, which is provided by the teacher. Then let your child pick a fun avatar!
