Program Schedule
7:30 – 8:30 a.m. Registration –Complementary coffee, tea, hot chocolate and pastries.
8:30 – 8:40 a.m. Welcome and introductions – Kenny Bach – President, MOVBA.
8:40 – 9:25 a.m. Keynote Speaker Why are bees dying and what beekeepers can do to help
stop or reduce these deaths? – Paul Poling Retired WV Apiary Specialist.

Workshop Session I
1. Basic Beekeeping I MOVBA Members
In this class you will be taught about the different woodenware and for
what it is used. This session is for new and prospective beekeepers.
2. Nucs, Nucs and more Nucs! Wade Stiltner WV Bee Inspector
Every apiary should have one. Don’t bee left out!
3. Transforming a weak Overwintered Hive. Joyce Frey WV Master
Beekeeper
Looking into your hive come early spring and wondering, “Will this hive live
and make any honey?” Let’s get started!
4. The Ins and Outs of Honey Bee Removal. Sam Hammett MOVBA
Learn the technique of how to remove honey bees from houses, bee trees
and even catch a swarm.
5. Queen Rearing. Dr. Steve Sheppard Professor & Department Chair,
Entomology
This class will focus on “the queen”.
6. Winter Management Paul Poling Retired WV Apiary Specialist
Let’s examine a variety of ideas beekeepers can do to prevent colony
loss from the winter.

Workshop Session II
1. Basic Beekeeping II
MOVBA Members
Let’s put the bees in their house! Learn about the honey bee, what jobs they
are assigned, how they draw out wax, different races and casts of bees and
much more. Again, this class is for new and prospective beekeepers.
2. Raising your own Queens – As easy as ABC

This class teaches how to raise queens using the Nicot (Jenter) method.
Using an alphabetical chart, it’s a step by step procedure to rearing your
own queens. Everything from start, to the setting up of your mating nucs.
3. What “Mite” be hiding in your hive?

This class will teach you one of the best techniques to determine if you have
a problem.

Let’s sell your Wares the right way!

Learn how to market your honey products in WV and Ohio. What general
rules need to be followed.
5. What damage are Herbicides / Pesticides doing to our Bees?
JJ Barrett
WVU Extension Agent for Wood Co.
A look into current FDA regulations regarding different products currently
being used.
6. Correcting inadequate Beekeeping Practices. Jason Bach VP NCBA
Learn what beekeeping mistakes could be avoidable. We learn by our
mistakes!

After lunch, you can come to the auditorium. Daniel Shockey, County
Executive Director with the USDA will discuss “The Emergency Livestock Assistance Program”.
This program is designed to assist beekeepers with hive / colony losses and supplemental
feeding due to adverse weather conditions.

MOVBA Members
Let’s bee careful and safe while working with the bees. Learn about proper
attire, how to keep a smoker lit and learn about various tools and their uses.
What about feeding and winter preparation? Can’t leave that out!
2. To Bee or not to Bee on the Web! Sally Blessing MOVBA Member
A beginner’s how-to guide to web design.
3. Spring Splits Wade Stiltner WV State Bee Inspector
Is that hive strong enough to split? Learn how to pick the right frames and
what you need to do to create that new hive.

that plague our bees. This class will help you stay on top!
