Welcome to the
New Garrison Commander
Colonel James Denny MBE MA
Colonel James Denny took
command of Tidworth,
Netheravon and Bulford
Garrison on 4th September.
Commissioned into the
Royal Regiment of Fusiliers
in 1980, Colonel Denny has
served in Northern Ireland
(in every rank from 2Lt to
Lt Col), Cyprus, the
Balkans, Op GRANBY, Iraq,
Ivory Coast and
Afghanistan, where he
commanded British Forces
during Op HERRICK in
2005.
He has been Director of Studies at the Kuwaiti Command
and Staff College, Chief of Staff 5th Division and comes to
this Garrison from Jordan where he was the Senior British
Liaison Officer, establishing and then commanding the
British Military Training Team there.
Colonel Denny is pleased to be here and is looking
forward to getting around and meeting as many people as
possible in the coming weeks.
A Centre of Excellence
Facilities at the
Tidworth
Equestrian Centre,
(the ‘TEC’), are now
complete, following
the official opening
last month of the
newly-constructed
Indoor Riding
School.
The ribbon was cut by
General Christopher
Elliott from the Army
Sport Control Board, one
of several contributors to
the £200,000 cost of the
building; other financial
sponsors were the Army
Central Fund, the Army
Welfare Grant
Committee and
the Nuffield Trust
for the Forces of
the Crown.
With the main
activities at the
Centre being
provided by the
Tidworth Riding
Club and the
Combined Services Polo Club, the TEC is now a ‘centre of
excellence’ for equestrianism in the Army, offering superb
stabling facilities, an outdoor arena and now an indoor
riding school for soldiers and their families to use and
enjoy. It will also be able to provide employment for
grooms and instructors as well as training for those who
want to go in to the sport as a career.
The Riding School, run by Vickie Angelo, provides
lessons for all ages, Saturday to Thursday. For more
information, please call 07500 - 868 940.
The Wellington Academy
Open Afternoon
Thurs 17 October
16:00 - 19:00 hrs
The Wellington Academy is committed to the education
and care of every single student. Families and students of
year 5/6 and the wider community are invited to come
and see for yourselves what we have to offer :
- Co-educational state boarding and day school for
students aged 11-19.
- visit our state-of-the-art campus, including our boarding
house and sixth form facilities,
- meet our students and dedicated staff
- see why we are the right school for your child
- 18:00 hrs : An Introduction to the Academy from Mike
Milner, Acting Principal, in the school theatre
The Wellington Academy benefits from the backing and
expertise of Wellington College, one of the UK's leading
independent schools. With a new leadership in place from
September 2013, (Dr Anthony Seldon, Master of
Wellington College, as Executive Head, and Mike Milner
as Acting Principal), there is a drive to ensure the best
possible outcomes for our students in 2014 and beyond.
We have a strong emphasis on raising attainment and
development of character for all students.
Since opening in 2009 the Wellington Academy is proud
of the strong links it has established with the community,
both military and civilian. Our student numbers have
increased to over 1100, with nearly 300 in the sixth form
and over 80 boarders benefiting from our fantastic £32
million state-of-the-art campus. We offer a broad and
inclusive curriculum with a range of academic and
applied learning options, to ensure that every child is able
to reach their potential.
Royal Welsh Summer Rugby
Captain Dai Gray, the Welfare Officer of The Royal Welsh,
in partnership with Andover Rugby Club, ran a successful
children’s rugby camp over the summer holidays. The
3-day camp concentrated on rugby values, rules and
skills.
Over 50 military and civilian children from the TNB
Garrison area took part, all of various ages and ability; for
some this was their first experience of rugby.
“The Camp was a great success and something that could
be run on an annual basis”, Captain Gray commented. “It
was good to see the kids having fun!”
Ex Long Run Home
Ex LONG RUN
HOME was an
endurance
challenge set by
the Commanding
Officer of 4 MI
Battalion. The aim
of the 136-mile run,
from Headquarters
4MI Battalion in
Bulford to
Headquarters
Intelligence Corps
in Chicksands,
Bedfordshire, was
to raise funds for
both ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the Motor Neurone
Disease Association.
The route on the first day took the runners through the
town of Marlborough, of which the Battalion has the
Freedom; afterwards, the majority of the challenge
followed the Ridgeway path across Oxfordshire.
Of course, there has to be an element of competition in all
military events - and this was no exception. Four of the
Battalion’s companies competed for the honour of being
the fastest team, each runner rotating through individual
legs of 10-15 miles each, totalling some 35 miles each day.
The exercise finished at Headquarters Intelligence Corps
on the afternoon of the 4th day and its completion was
marked by a parade (and doughnuts) - and with the Corps
Colonel congratulating everyone for their efforts.
Although Exercise LONG RUN HOME is over, donations
are still coming in, so if you would like to donate to two
very good causes, then please visit our JustGiving site at :

Royal Engineers repair a key
Bridge in Helmand
Sappers from Tidworth-based 22 Engineer Regiment have
repaired a key bridge in the Lashkar Gah district of
Helmand Province.
Coming soon : New Buses on
the Activ8 route
Salisbury Reds will soon be launching 3 new British built
Enviro 400 double deck buses from Alexander Dennis onto
the popular Salisbury to Andover Activ8 route.
Andrew Wickham, Managing Director of Go South Coast,
the Go Ahead-owned group of bus and coach operators in
the region, was joined by Garrison Commander Col James
Denny, Deputy Commander Lt Col David Barron and
Salisbury Reds Operations Manager Andrew Sherrington,
to launch the comfortable and environmentally friendly
new buses, with their new livery - and free Wifi !
"August marked the 10th anniversary of the Go Ahead
Group’s acquisition of Wilts & Dorset, so we are pleased to
celebrate with this major investment and reaffirm our
commitment to providing the best possible service to the
people of Wiltshire," said Andrew Wickham.
Colonel Denny commended the investment in the Activ8
route, saying : "The new buses will be much appreciated
by our Service personnel and the families who choose to
use this convenient service."
Please visit www.salisburyreds.co.uk for details of routes,
tickets, season tickets, etc.
Basharan Bridge, which was first built in 2010, crosses the
Char Anjir Wadi, linking local communities in the
Basharan and Babaji areas. The bridge allows farmers
from Babaji to move their produce to markets in Lashkar
Gah and makes moving between the economic hubs of
Lashkar Gah and Gereshk more efficient. More locally,
the bridge also makes it easier for children to attend
school in Basharan.
The bridge had been damaged by an improvised
explosive device laid by insurgents earlier this year. The
Sappers, from 5 Squadron, mounted a two-day operation
in the soaring Afghan heat to repair the bridge, replacing
damaged parts with new ones, so it can remain in place
permanently.
Captain George Andrews, 22 Engineer Regiment, said:
"My troop worked hard on the task despite the heat and
we could all see what it meant to the local people as a
small crowd had gathered by the time we had done."
Lieutenant Colonel Jason Kerr, Commanding Officer
22 Engineer Regiment, said:
"It was very satisfying to repair Basharan Bridge which is
used regularly by locals in the area.
"The Engineers have been busy this tour not only
reinforcing existing British bases across Helmand but also
removing some, as our profile across the province has
reduced. It's a real indicator of progress when we close or
handover a base - it shows the Afghans just don't need us
there anymore."

Reading pays Dividends
Sig Ashley Brimelow from 215 Signal Squadron is the
lucky winner of the ‘Big Read Challenge’, organised by
Functional Skills
tutors at 10 Army
Education Centre in
conjunction with the
Reading Agency.
Soldiers were set the
challenge of reading
six books and
completing a journal
describing what
they had read.
”I read the books on
my phone while I
was waiting to pick
someone up at the
airport!” said Sig
Brimelow. “ I never used to read much before and if my
Sergeant Major hadn’t suggested it, I wouldn’t have
bothered, but I read 6 books in two weeks and now I can’t
stop - I really like reading now!”
He was presented with a Kindle by Lt Col Stuart Barltrop,
Commander ETS.
“A huge number of soldiers who started the challenge,
completed it - and enjoyed it,” said Kirsty Alderson, one
of the tutors. “They found reading a good alternative to
the XBox!”
Watch out for the Autumn Challenge - starting soon !
Open to all serving soldiers - details from the Education
Centre in Jellalabad Barracks, Tidworth.

19 Regt RA fires Royal Salute
To mark the occasion of Her Majesty the Queen’s arrival
in Scotland, members of 127 (Dragon) Battery,
19 Regiment Royal Artillery, travelled from Tidworth to
Edinburgh Castle to perform a 21-gun Royal Salute.
The guns were set up on Mill’s Mount (the location of the
famous one o’clock gun) and began firing as the Queen
stepped out of her car at Holyrood Palace. Although this
was a very special occasion in its own right, the event was
particularly
pertinent as it
was 19th
Regiment’s first
engagement in
its recruiting
area under its
new title, ‘The
Scottish
Gunners’. All
those present felt
very proud and
honoured to be
part of the event.
The Under-8s team from the Tidworth Town Football
Club now have a super-smart new strip, thanks to their
coach, Tracy Jackson, and the generosity of ABF The
Soldiers’ Charity. The team posed for this picture wearing
their new tops for the first time after it was presented to
them by Andy Batcock on behalf of the charity.
“It’s really fantastic kit, we’re really pleased with it” said
Steve Slater, Chairman of the Club. “80% of the children
in the Club come from military families and to have the
name of The Soldiers’ Charity on the front of the shirts
really gets the charity’s name out there and noticed”.
The Club is a FA Chartered Standard Community Club
and meets at their pitches on Humber Lane, Tidworth.
There are 10 children’s teams (ages 7-14), an adult team, a
Soccer School and a Development School. For more
details visit www.tidworthtownfc.co.uk.
Tidworth’s new Play Park
is named
The newest
and largest
play park in
the Garrison
was
officially
opened on
20th
September.
Its name,
“Hero
Park”, was
suggested
by the
children from nearby Clarendon Infants School, winners
of the play park naming competition.
“It’s a joy to see children enjoying themselves”, said
Garrison Commander, Colonel James Denny, after cutting
the ribbon, with the help of Katie Bates from Clarendon
Junior School. “The message to everyone is: use it, enjoy
it, but please do look after it !” he said.
The play park has been provided by MODern Housing
Solutions (MHS), the organisation responsible for
maintaining Service Families’ Accommodation on behalf
of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (MOD/DIO).
Located close to the Wylye Road quarters, the new play
park caters for children of all ages, with the latest in
British Safety Standard (BS EN) play equipment and safety
surfacing and has a fenced area for smaller children.
A “SSAFA Big Brew,” organised by MHS with the help of
1RHA, provided tea, coffee and cakes for everyone and
raised around £130 for SSAFA.
Raising the Flag for the Special
Olympics 2013
Soldiers from 4 (Close Support) Battalion REME had the
honour of raising the flag for the Special Olympics at the
opening ceremony held in Bath’s Royal Crescent recently.
The Special Olympics was established in 1978 and is
considered as the 'third' member of the Olympic family.
The Special Olympics Great Britain offers year round
sports training and competitions for people with
intellectual (learning) disabilities.
The ceremony was attended by over 7,000 athletes,
volunteers and supporters. There was a special video
message from Prime Minister, David Cameron and the
evening culminated in a performance from Britain's Got
Talent star, Susan Boyle.
"This was a wonderful opportunity to be involved with
the continuation of the Olympic legacy”, said WO1 RSM
Verity Bartlett. “Everything was rehearsed and went well
and the flag is flying high!"
