17TH WORKSHOP OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF
PHYTOPLANKTON TAXONOMY AND ECOLOGY (IAP)

SECOND CIRCULAR
We thank you for expressing interest in participating in the 17th Workshop of the
International Association of Phytoplankton Taxonomy and Ecology (IAP), which will
be held in Greece, in the Municipality of Kastoria on 14 - 21 September 2014. The
workshop will be organized by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of
Biology and sponsored by CYANOCOST – ES 1105 COST Action. As highlighted in
the first circular, the main topic of the meeting is Phytoplankton biogeography. The
taxonomic part of the workshop will be devoted to the polyphasic taxonomy of
phytoplankton focusing on cyanobacteria. Other topics are welcome but the
organizing committee will privilege the contributions more tightly linked to the main
topics. The main topics of the congress were reported in the first circular. The interest
in these topics is underlined by the high number of pre-registrations (more than 70)
that we have received so far.
Call for contributions
You are invited to submit contributions to be considered for an oral or a poster
presentation. In case of too many requests for oral contributions, the organizing
committee may recommend some participants to change their contributions from an
oral to a poster presentation. Oral contributions will have 15 minutes available for
presentation+5 minutes for discussion. Oral presentations should be prepared in MS
PowerPoint (for Windows). If you have any special requirement please contact
[email protected]. The posters will be displayed and presented during the
workshop in special sessions. The time allocation for posters formal presentation is 23 minutes plus the time for discussion in front of the poster panels during poster
sessions. The posters may not exceed the following dimensions: 80 cm wide and 110
cm height.
Instructions for abstract submission
The abstract for oral and poster presentations should be a maximum of 300 words.
The name of the author making the presentation should be underlined and the
affiliation should be in details (full postal address and e-mails) following the
formatting and instruction given in the attached file
(Surname_Name_IAP17th_Abstract.doc). Please indicate your preference for an oral
or a poster presentation. Only electronic submission will be considered. The abstracts
will be reviewed and recommended for oral or poster presentation. We request the
understanding of the authors if we are unable to accommodate a request for an oral
presentation.
Abstracts should be sent as an attachment to [email protected] until 15
May 2014.
Publication
A selection (according to standards of the journal) of papers presented at the IAP
workshop will be published as a special issue of Hydrobiologia. Manuscripts for the
special volume must be submitted by 30th of November 2014.
Fees and Accommodation
There is no registration fee for the Workshop, but only costs for half-board
accommodation, which will include staying in single, double or triple rooms,
breakfast, lunch and coffee-breaks. The participants will be hosted in the Limneon
Resort & Spa, http://www.limneon.com which is located 5 km outside the city of
Kastoria. The Workshop cost for 7-days (14 -21 September 2014) accommodation is
510 EUROs per person for a single room accommodation, 330 EURO per person for a
double room and 268 EURO per person for a triple room.
All necessary information for payment of accommodation is reported below.

Please specify the name of the Workshop (17th IAP Workshop) and your name (name,
surname) as the motive for the bank transfer. After the deposit is made, you are kindly
asked to fill in the hotel form attached and send it to the hotel’s email
([email protected]), indicating the room you wish to stay (single, double or
triple), the dates of arrival and departure and your room mate/s in case you have asked
for a double or triple room. You will receive a confirmation of money transfer and
reservation from the hotel by e-mail. Receipts of payments will be provided by the
hotel at your departure.
Important: Payments should be made before 15th May 2011. Please send
confirmation of hotel payment also to [email protected] along with your
abstract. Confirmation of payment is mandatory for the final acceptance of
registration and abstract.
Hotel Cancellation policy:
You can cancel your reservation 30 days before the arrival without any charges.
In case of cancellation 29-15 days before the arrival date, the charge is up to 30% of
the total amount of the reservation. In case of cancellation 14-05 days before the
arrival date, the charge is up to 50% of the total amount of the reservation. In case of
cancellation 4 days before the arrival date or not shown, the charge is up to the total
amount of the reservation.
Transportation to and from Kastoria
Kastoria is located at the northwestern part of Greece. There is a small airport near the
town (10 Km) with a service from skyexpress airlines (http://www.skyexpress.gr).
Other airports/destinations are Kozani (70 km) which is also served by skyexpress
airlines and the most convenient one, the international airport of Thessaloniki (190
km) www.thessalonikiairport.com; From Kozani you can reach Kastoria by bus
(Kozani-Kastoria line, http://www.ktelkozanis.gr/Home.aspx) (trip almost an hour)
which departs from Kozani’s central bus station. A bus line is also available from
Thessaloniki to Kastoria (Thessaloniki-Kastoria line, http://www.ktelmacedonia.gr )
(trip almost 2 ½ hours) which departs from Thessaloniki’s Central Bus Station. From
the airport of Thessaloniki you can reach the bus station either by taxi or by local bus.

15th & 16th September. Scientific sessions and microscopy.
17th September. Mid-workshop excursion (to the ancient Prespa Lakes).
18th, 19th & 20th September. Scientific sessions and microscopy.
21th September. Departures.
As announced in the first circular, during the mid-workshop excursion we will visit
the ancient (>2 million years old) Prespa Lakes (Mikri Prespa and Megali Prespa),
which are among the oldest lakes in Europe, and of the few long-lived lakes
worldwide.
The IAP 17th social dinner will take place on Friday, 19th September.
