Meteora Thessaloniki Olympos Vergina 2 1st day- Arrival Arrival at Thessaloniki airport. Transfer by bus or car to the hotel in the city of Thessaloniki. 2nd day: Thessaloniki City Tour Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BC by Cassander, king of Macedonians. In Roman times it used to be the most important city, closely located to the Via Egnatia, the main route connecting Rome with the Byzantine Empire (Constantinople). During the Byzantine times, Thessaloniki used to be the second most important city after the Empire's metropolis, Constantinople (present Istanbul). There exist many monuments from that period, such as St Demetrius cathedral, a site in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. There also exist buildings from the long Ottoman period like the indoor market of Bezesteni, the Hamam- traditional Turkish baths, Kemal Ataturk's home, and the White Tower, the most well-known landmark of the city. Thessaloniki is not only a historical but also a cultural and educational centre. In 2014 Thessaloniki was awarded a prize by the magazine FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) and considered to be the best medium-sized European City for the future for human capital and lifestyle. During our guided tour we are going to see the White Tower, the Galerius Arch, the Rotonda, the Citadel, the Market Hall and the remaining of the City Walls, from where we’ll enjoy the marvellous view of the whole city. Also, we'll be visiting the Byzantine Church of St Demetrius and its crypt. Of course there will also be a visit to the local Archaeological and Byzantine museums as well as a stroll at the newly constructed bay. Additional free time around the city. 3 3rd day: Vergina- Pella Trip to the archaeological site of Vergina, the Palace and the tomb of King Philippos II, father of Alexander the Great. The royal tombs in Vergina were discovered by the Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos in November 1977 and this site became known worldwide. Ancient Pella is the land of Alexander the Great. We are going to set out to a journey through time to the glorious kingdom of ancient Macedonia, where Alexander the Great was born. Dive into the rich history of the Macedonian state capital, a bustling metropolis of the Classical period. A number of excavations at the site reveal the ancient city's majestic grandeur. 4th day : Free day This is a free day in Thessaloniki to discover by yourselves this amazing city or go swimming at a nearby beach. Mount Olympos was believed to be the home of the 12 Olympian Gods of the ancient Greek world. It was created after the Gods had defeated the Titans in the Titan war, and soon the place was inhabited by the Gods. It is the setting for many legendary stories. Every trip and hiking tour or path on Mount Olympos creates a special sensation because it offers multiple possibilities to the hiking visitor, mountaineer or climber. Meteora constitutes the biggest and most important group of monasteries in Greece after those on Mt Athos. Their existence dates back in the 11 th century, when the first hermits settled down there. The monasteries built on the large rocks have been characterized by UNESCO as a unique phenomenon of cultural heritage and they are one of the most significant stations of the cultural map of Greece.
