Biography of Pippa Smart Profile Pippa Smart is a research communication and publishing consultant, working for her own company, PSP Consulting. She has worked in academic and research publishing for over 25 years and has a wealth of knowledge about the industry. Pippa graduated from Oxford Brookes University with a degree in publishing and then worked for several UK academic and research publishers including Cambridge University Press, Blackwell Science and CABI. She held a variety of roles within these companies including production, technical development, editorial and strategic management. Latterly she held the position of Head of Publishing with a development agency (INASP), working with developing world journal publishers (particularly Africa and SE Asia) to manage publishing programmes and help them move to online publication. She has extensive experience of the industry, and currently uses this to advise publishers in development of their publishing programmes (including the Food and Agriculture Agency of the UN in Italy, and the Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Journals publishing company). She runs a series of training programmes independently and jointly with other organisations (such as the European Association of Science Editors, EASE, and the Association of Learned, Professional and Society Publishers, ALPSP) on topics such as editorial skills, journal business development and copyright. She has developed training and policy documents for a variety of organisations (e.g. on rights management for the World Intellectual Property Organization, and on e-book publishing for Higher Education Press in China). She also works closely with the Association of Learned, Professional and Society Publishers (ALPSP), developing training courses for their members and writing their monthly newsletter on the publishing industry, which is read by over 2000 publishers around the world. She was responsible for the development and implementation of the publishing support programme that provided consultancy services to publishers in developing countries. She created training programmes for editors and publishers and assisted the partnering of organisations and individuals to help build skills and capacity. She was instrumental in obtaining 5-year grant funding of c.£500k pa for the AuthorAid project by creating and presenting the proposal. She also developed and implemented an online journal publishing methodology to help groups of journals to publish online in a cost-effective and highly-visible manner.
