Independent Publishers of New England
PO Box 206  Arlington, MA 02476  [email protected]
IPNE’s mission is to provide opportunities for education and
networking for those engaged in independent book publishing and
related activities in the six New England states.
IPNE offers educational programs, marketing opportunities,
advocacy, and resources for all aspects of publishing. The
organization is supported primarily by membership dues and other
income substantially related to its purpose.
We support our members by exhibiting at trade shows and
conferences, and by providing educational and networking
opportunities.
Whether you’re an experienced publisher with many titles, a newer
publisher with one book, or a vendor that supports the publishing
field, you’ll come to enjoy our active group and the camaraderie
and business growth opportunities that come with it!
Board of Directors
Charlotte Pierce
Our members are available to do presentations on independent
publishing at libraries, bookstores, schools, conferences, and
literary/book festivals.

The One Sure Thing about Publishing
As I’m sure most IPNE members will agree, the one sure thing about publishing is that
it will be different tomorrow than it is today. There’s the emergence—well actually, the
flood—of independent publishers and authors empowered by today’s technology who are
communicating their content in a mind-bending array of formats, niches, platforms, and
channels. We see these sea-changes not only as ebooks continue to leapfrog over print
in market share, but also in the rise of brand-new business models like the Skoobe book
subscription service taking hold in Europe, or Wattpad, a manuscript-sharing service
where readers actually help shape the final book with chapter-by-chapter suggestions.
With services like Indiegogo, Kickstarter, and Patreon, we arguably don’t even need
bankers—the crowd can fund our book projects.
Oh, yes, we like the agility offered by our independence—but being small or solo, we also need to seek each
other out and be mindful of opportunities to support colleagues and strike productive collaborations. As my
friend David Amerland on Google Plus noted in a recent session of IPNE’s live-streaming weekly Indie Office
Hours, “collaboration is the new competition.”
Think about it: collaboration is the new competition. Those who have the opportunity to spot and connect
with the right experts at the right time to fill temporary or permanent roles in a small publishing operation will
succeed. Those who engage with others, pay it forward, treat their peers with respect, and share the sheer joy
of putting thoughts into print (or bytes) will be able to take advantage of the agility their independence affords
them. Another Google Plus friend, printing broker Susan Watkins, noted, “I don’t consider other printers my
competitors; we help each other to become better.”
And that’s really the core of IPNE: “Indies Helping Indies,” as we like to say: providing a myriad of
opportunities to connect, learn, and share expertise with others in our industry. Members can participate
at affordable rates in cooperative marketing events like the IPNE exhibits at the New England Independent
Booksellers Association, the New England Library Association, and the prestigious Boston Book Festival, which
doesn’t even accept self-published authors, except as part of an organization like IPNE.
And “Indies Helping Indies” goes beyond trade shows, to cutting-edge technology and traditional media.
We co-sponsor the live-streaming shows Indie Office Hours and Face The Book TV, where members can
participate and use the resulting YouTube videos and links in their own promotions. Members can advertise
for a full year in this catalog starting at an affordable $35, and it has legs. We take the catalog everywhere we go,
from the book shows, to our Metro Boston branch meetings and other industry events. Our Spring Conference
and Book Awards buzz with indie excitement each year. Members who connect with us on Twitter, LinkedIn,
Google Plus, Facebook, Pinterest, and other social media platforms quickly recognize IPNE as a friend who will
amplify their message—and they often return the favor. Members can post in the IPNE blog (IPNE.org/blog),
which is again amplified through those social media sites. We provide referrals to publishing services and offer
discounts with organizations like Independent Book Publishers Association, the League of Vermont Writers, the
Association of Rhode Island Authors, and the Association of Publishers Special Sales (APSS).
So jump in and help a fellow Indie! Give us a call, visit the website (IPNE.org), or come to an event to
talk publishing, find a mentor or publishing service provider, volunteer to help at an event, or collaborate on
starting an IPNE branch in your community. We’re all in this together, and it’s all part of learning, sharing, and
improving our publishing ventures!

An Era of Change
Regardless of where you stand on today’s publishing issues, from price wars between
retailers and publishers, to the pros and cons of using digital right management software
(DRM), it’s an incredibly exciting time to be part of the independent publishing world.
Innovative new programs and opportunities appear all the time—writing residencies via
Amtrak, a growing collective voice of professional self-publishers advocating for a range
of causes. Just last week, I submitted an application to do novel research from through
Spaceship Earth Grants. If this works out, I’ll be one of a group of fellow space enthusiasts
on a commercial flight seeking to share how viewing your home world from space forever changes your
perspective, and how that can benefit everything from art to science and beyond.
When I published my first novel in 2010, Smashwords was a new company. Its CEO, Mark Coker, answered
emails personally, and it was the first year they actually made a profit. (And to his credit, he still takes a very
active role in communicating with the publishing community.) Earlier this year, Forbes announced Smashwords
made it on the list of America’s Most Promising Companies. How far independent publishing has come!
The rapid change speaks to the far-reaching effects of technology and social media in this Digital Age. It’s a
time to be agile and experiment. Platforms like Goodreads make it easy for authors to connect with readers, for
hosting Q&A sessions and book giveaways, and IPNE offers a variety of services from live, webcast presentations
and discussions on Google Plus and interviews with authors through the Face The Book TV program. While it
can be a challenge to keep up with all the opportunities, it’s wonderful to have so many of them.
As someone who is relatively new to IPNE, and a newly elected board member, I’m delighted to be part of
this organization. In the short time I’ve been affiliated with IPNE, I’ve enjoyed the conversations and am looking
forward to participating in the Boston Book Festival from the other side of the table this year—just in time for
the launch of a new novel.
In the future, I’ll be posting on IPNE’s blog about social media, blogging, or other digital strategies that help
independent publishers. Stay tuned, and bring plenty of questions!

AN EXC
“This uplifting book celebrates
kindness and tells the story
of what a few people can do
to change the world. Families
will love its undeniable charm
and the incredible story of
compassion.”
— Alexis C. Fox,
Humane Society of the
United States
Like many who so generously answer pleas that
come across local television stations, Nancy
responded to a news broadcast about a pig,
now Willow-Mia Pig, who was found on the side
of Route 495 in Massachusetts in 2012. After
seeing Willow-Mia Pig through to a safe haven,
Nancy was inspired by Willow-Mia Pig’s journey
and decided to share it with children. Her goal
is to ensure that both children and adults become more aware of the importance of treating
animals with love and kindness. Nancy continues to surround herself with others who “dare
to care,” and her contagious enthusiasm has
created a tremendous groundswell of support
to see that farms be held accountable to certain
standards when caring for animals.

New
Stories
The Lamoille Stories ii
“Neither the postcard image of Vermont nor
the Norman Rockwell version fits the fiction
of Bill Schubart. His spot-on authentic folk
tales of small town pranksters and tough
cases, drunkards and darlings, swerve from
comedy to heartbreak like a winding back
road. Ultimately, like the old man hand-digging the grave of his wife of 70 years, these
stories possess a kindness, wisdom and
dignity that make them well worth the read.”
willy’s beer garden and 20 new tales from vermont
Bill Schubart
—Stephen Kiernan, author of The Curiosity
and Last Rights
A wholly new collection of Lamoille Stories from Vermont author, Bill
Schubart. Many of the original characters in the 2008 edition like
Jeeter, Pete, Theron and Lila are back in this new set of stories.
• Hiding his beer from his wife, Willy discovers that if he buries
a 12 oz. bottle of Old Fitzgerald beer in the woods, in time
it’ll grow into a quart.
• David unwillingly discovers the mysteries of the female sex
when he loses his VW keys.
• After 60 years of marriage, Theron’s wife Lila succumbs to diabetes on their farm. Theron defies local funeral traditions and,
with the help of his friend Dr. Phil, lays Lila to her final rest.
“Lamoille Stories II” extends Bill Schubart’s collection of rural Vermont
tales – some uproarious, some heartbreaking – about the characters
that enriched his early years there. Bill lives, works, and writes in
Hinesburg.

Yup, Content Is King!
The marketing mantra these days is that you need to regularly publish content in order to create
and maintain your author or publisher platform, or identity, on social media.
What!? How on earth do you expect me to generate and post
all of this information and publish a book or run a business?
Granted, the task can seem a bit overwhelming, if you think about drumming it all up
from scratch. But don’t be so hard on yourself. By looking around with new eyes, you can come
up with quick ways to package pithy posts by leveraging your existing content and putting the
great technology that’s right under your nose to work. It can even be fun!
Here’s another bit of advice before I give you some content-creation ideas: automate.
Use a social-media management utility like Hootsuite (hootsuite.com), Buffer (buffer.com)to
stockpile and schedule your content in advance. These programs often have browser bookmarks so you don’t have to stop
everything to post a juicy morsel found in the course of your work. You’ll be able to centralize your different accounts,
from Twitter to Google Plus to LinkedIn to Facebook Pages; then comment, share, and engage with your audience without
spending endless hours on it!
Ok, let’s get on with where to find that content:
1. Book snippets. These can be a quote, a few lines or a sample chapter. Your audience likes to feel included
and special. The best way to offer the sample chapter is to direct them to a link to your website that then
asks them for an email address so you can send them the file. That helps you build that email list you keep
hearing about.
2. Your book cover and illustrations. You can set up with a “cover war” and let your audience help you pick
out your cover from among several images. Posting illustrations with a description of their relationship to
the story is a great way to build interest and engage readers.
3. Listicles. Listicles (not a new body organ) can be simple or very informative. The key to their effectiveness
is the headline. When you browse around the web, or as you read your favorite magazine, pay attention to
the headlines that caught your eye and ask yourself why they did. Don’t always be serious; a little intelligent
humor goes a long way. NOTE: While you’re here, try creating a juicy headline for this listicle and email it to
me at [email protected]!
4. Interviews with the author/ publisher. Your audience wants to know more about you. The only way that
you are the same as everybody else is that you are unique, too. Why did you start writing or publishing?
What are you most proud of? How did you overcome failures? This is where you can gain loyalty from
your audience, if they feel that they know you, they begin to care. That builds trust in you and your products and services.
5. Curate content. All of your content does not need to be your own. If you read something that fascinates
you, you should share it, just like a good book. Write a summary on the blog post or article that you are
sharing and explain if you agree or disagree with the content. Ask your audience questions about their
reaction and begin a conversation. Make sure that you mention the author of the piece and preserve the
original links. You may find that the author starts to pay attention to you and helps you spread your content in return!
6. Events. Many people post an event with all the information on the when, how and why but I am surprised
how often they don’t take advantage of the opportunity to create content at the event. Take pictures, tweet,
make notes of great quotes from speakers and when the event is over write a few short pieces about the
event from different perspectives. Do this while it is still fresh in your mind. Take pictures with your audi-
10
ence at book signings, tell them you will email them the picture (great way to get that email address), let
them know that you will be posting the pictures on your social media accounts so they should follow you!
7. Promote your competition. This one might surprise you. You may be asking yourself, “Why on earth
would I want to promote the competition’s stuff ?” Because they have the audience that you want to buy
your book. If you get in front of their eyes they are likely to follow you and that gives you the opportunity
to sell them your book. The cool thing is that often the other author appreciates your sharing their work
and will return the favor. Now, it makes sense doesn’t it?
8. Facts and figures. It doesn’t matter where your book’s story is located or in what century it takes place you
can find oodles of information that ties into your book. Are you writing about 19th century midwifery?
Write a post about what could be found in a midwife’s bag, illnesses of the time, survival rates, and on
and on. Include pictures that connect to the story. You will be surprised to find that all of your hours spent
researching will pay off again as usable content.
9. Video. You can’t see me, but I am jumping up and down. This is my favorite form of content creation and
today’s tech has made it easy. Of course, a book trailer is a must. Some have their book trailer created by a
professional and others do it themselves. Either way it is a powerful bit of content. Don’t be shy and keep in
mind that you don’t have to be perfect. Sometimes the imperfection is what allows your audience to connect with you. Make small videos of less than 2 minutes. How cool would it be to have a short video with
someone who just read your book telling how much they loved it? Or of you reading a chapter at the local
library or book store. As a publisher you can create interviews with your authors to post on your website
and to share. Video is the coolest kid on the block right now. Most of the time you can take the video with
your phone and did you know that YouTube is the second largest search engine?
10. Reuse content. Use content from your last book, old research and articles that you have saved. Go through
your old blog posts and magazine articles and see if you can put a new spin on them or consider how
things have changed since they were published.
I’m sure you’ll come up with some content-generating ideas of your own. There are many opportunities in the writing and publishing of a book that you can use to create real information that connects with your audience and helps you
build a platform of readers who are interested in what you have to offer. Of course it takes work, but the exercise fuels your
creativity and makes you more empathic to your audience and helps you learn what they expect from you as an author or a
publisher.

“...in this age of Harry Potter and Chris Van

If Mary Jane was motivated by the quest for truth

by purposes quite different in Book II. For both
girls, it is the embracing of hope—of salvation for
Maddy, illumination for Esmeralda—that propels
them along their parallel paths.

Emily Butler is having a
crisis. Her 30th birthday looms.
Technology gangs up on her
at every turn. And cooking for
others as a personal chef is
killing her love for food. When
the two year-old child of a client
pees on Emily in the kitchen, she
is about to put away the cleaver
for good when a stranger dares
her to own her future.
Peter Distefano has his own
problems. He loves women
(frequently), but while lusted
for he is never loved. Now he’s
getting phone calls from a dead woman. As a consultant,
he works with corporations to resolve conflicts and
disputes. But his boss thinks Peter is burnt out. Peter has
one more chance to save his career. Too bad it’s a no-win
situation.
The unlikely pair face a world of haywire cell phones,
self-driving cars, dumpster diving anarchists, and an
internet company gone rogue. Their paths are converging
and their actions will define each other as much as
themselves.
Todd Wheeler’s second novel, Dragonfly and River
Stone, casts a skeptical eye on where our clever phones
and social networks are taking us in his new near future
science-fiction novel.

Hill, have fun: “Searching for Rhode Island.”

1918
David Cornish, MD
Written by a doctor of internal medicine,
1918 is a rigorously researched historical
novel about the world’s worst pandemic. Dr.
Edward Noble, an army major and infectious
disease sub-specialist, has a unique position
in Boston that allows him to detect an
emerging influenza strain that is an
unprecedented global threat. Up to 100
million people died from the infection. The
medical literature and terminology of the time
is used to put the reader in the mind of an
early 20th century physician.
