Ken Jefferson has joined the 2015 Jacksonville
Sheriff’s Race
Jacksonville, Fla., March 3, 2014 – Ken Jefferson, a 24 year veteran with the
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, has officially joined the 2015 race for the Office of the
Sheriff of Jacksonville. This morning at the Supervisor of Elections Office, Jefferson
filed the paperwork to become a candidate.
Jefferson has a number of ideas to help improve the department including establishing
a community advisory committee to obtain input on ways to better serve the needs of
our citizens. The committee will be comprised of key stakeholders, community leaders,
citizens, high school and college students.
Jefferson will increase police visibility in high crime areas and in the community at large.
He will establish a strong and aggressive separate traffic enforcement unit to deal with
the high rate of pedestrian deaths in the city. He will also be proactive and deal with
juvenile crime by partnering with faith based organizations, businesses and the
community to teach and mentor young people to deter at risk behavior.
Jefferson served as an officer in leadership roles with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office
(JSO) from 1986 to 2010. He was JSO’s Public Information Officer for five years
serving as the face and voice of the Sheriff’s Department. Prior to that role, he was an
Administrative Detective in the Inspections and Accreditation Unit, Academy Instructor,
Field Training Officer, Burglary Detective, Sex Crimes Detective, and Police Recruiter.
He was also a Federal Program Coordinator in charge of the Drug Education for Youth
(DEFY) Program, which involved training, teaching and mentoring targeted at risk youth.
.
Jefferson is CEO and founder of the Jefferson Consulting Group and has traveled
extensively conducting workshops and seminars on self-empowerment. He recently
served as an Expert Crime Analyst for WJXT and appeared daily to offer expert advice
and tips on crime prevention. He has also been a contributing author to the Florida Star
newspaper.
Jefferson has received many awards and accolades throughout the years. He was
recognized by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida for his
outstanding display of leadership, commitment, and coordination of the DEFY Program.
He was awarded the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award and was honored as
the Public Information Officer of the Year by the Florida Law Enforcement Public
Information Officers’ Association (FLEPIOA) for the State of Florida in 2006-2007 and in
2007-2008. He is the only person to ever win the coveted award two consecutive years.
Jefferson was also honored with a lifesaving award after he rescued three young girls
from a car that had been submerged in a deep retention pond following an accident.
Jefferson is active in the community and currently serves as Vice Chair of the Board of
Directors of the Justice Coalition and National Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for
Operation Save Our Sons. He is on the board of directors for Project SOS, Keiser
