The Anniston Star Wednesday, October 1, 2014 Page 3D JACKSONVILLE STATE FOOTBALL With UT Martin next, Hill sees JSU maturing BY MIKE PERRIN Star Sports Correspondent Cornerbacks get a lot of attention. Like long snappers — who normally don’t — that attention often comes when things go wrong on the football field. Ask any cornerback how they handle the spotlight when it’s particularly harsh after a big play by the offense, and you’ll hear something like what Jacksonville State’s Jaylen Hill said: “You have to have a short-term memory. You can’t make every play, but you have to limit the amount of plays being made to your side. “Have a short-term memory and a good mindset,” he said. “Keep being confident in what UT Martin at you do.” CorJacksonville nerState backs Saturday, also ESPN3, 3 p.m. have a reputation, reinforced by NFL stars such as Richard Sherman and long before him superstar Deion Sanders, for trash talking with equally loudmouthed wide receivers. Hill said he talks a little, but it’s not especially trashy. “I try not to be too talky,” the fourth-leading tackler for the Gamecocks said. “I want my actions to do the talking. We do talk backand-forth with the receivers and there’s some trash talking. Some of it though, is to encourage each other. I’m not encouraging them to do better, but I like to tell them give us their best effort and make it a good game.” Hill, a redshirt sophomore from Marietta, Ga., is second on the team in solo tackles with 17 of his 18 stops being unassisted. He has two pass break-ups and two passes defended for the Gamecocks (3-1, 1-0 Steve Latham/Jacksonville State University Jacksonville State cornerback Jaylen Hill (11) has 18 tackles this season. Ohio Valley Conference), who play host to Tennessee-Martin (1-3, 0-2) on Saturday at 3 p.m. He said the JSU defense — fifth in the league stats, allowing 376 yards a game — is coming together. “I feel like we have learned how to play together. Basically, we’re learning to mature overall as a defense and helping each fensive coordinators David Blackwell and Brandon Hall stressed takeaways in the preseason, but so far the Gamecocks have just two interceptions and haven’t pounced on any of their opponents’ five fumbles. Hill’s cornerback partner Jermaine Hough has both of the interceptions, one he returned for a score against West Alabama. “We’re still talking about turnovers at practice,” Hill said. “We’ve had plenty of opportunities, but we have to capitalize and come up with more turnovers. We strive for that every day at practice. It doesn’t go unspoken. “You have to know what defense you’re in, where the open slots are in the defense and play your technique against your man. Once you do that, he will lead you to the ball. There are many ways you can play the ball — watch his eyes or, if you’re in good enough position, you can look and see where the ball is. It comes with repetition, how comfortable you are playing that receiver and the ball.” JACKSONVILLE STATE SEASON STATISTICS JSU Opp. SCORING 130 130 Points Per Game 32.5 32.5 Points Off Turnovers 14 110 FIRST DOWNS 107 75 Rushing 61 25 Passing 37 36 Penalty 9 14 RUSHING YARDAGE 1026 494 Yards gained rushing 1143 605 Yards lost rushing 117 111 Rushing Attempts 207 147 Average Per Rush 5.0 3.4 Average Per Game 256.5 123.5 TDs Rushing 10 5 PASSING YARDAGE 884 1010 Comp-Att-Int 70-119-7 77-115-2 Average Per Pass 7.4 8.8 Average Per Catch 12.6 13.1 Average Per Game 221.0 252.5 TDs Passing 6 10 TOTAL OFFENSE 1910 1504 Total Plays 326 262 Average Per Play 5.9 5.7 Average Per Game 477.5 376.0 KICK RETURNS: #-Yards 16-379 16-320 PUNT RETURNS: #-Yards 3-17 7-24 INT RETURNS: #-Yards 2-34 7-145 KICK RETURN AVERAGE 23.7 20.0 PUNT RETURN AVERAGE 5.7 3.4 INT RETURN AVERAGE 17.0 20.7 FUMBLES-LOST 3-2 5-0 PENALTIES-Yards 33-356 22-202 Average Per Game 89.0 50.5 PUNTS-Yards 21-830 28-1185 Average Per Punt 39.5 42.3 Net punt average 38.4 41.7 KICKOFFS-Yards 24-1459 22-1249 Average Per Kick 60.8 56.8 Net kick average 40.2 35.0 TIME OF POSSESSION/Game 30:26 29:34 3RD-DOWN Conversions 27/64 13/52 3rd-Down Pct 42% 25% 4TH-DOWN Conversions 4/6 4/6 4th-Down Pct 67% 67% SACKS BY-Yards 8-55 7-60 MISC YARDS 3 0 TOUCHDOWNS SCORED 17 17 FIELD GOALS-ATTEMPTS 4-5 4-6 ON-SIDE KICKS 0-0 0-1 RED-ZONE SCORES (14-19) 74% (14-16) 88% RED-ZONE TOUCHDOWNS (12-19) 63% (11-16) 69% PAT-ATTEMPTS (16-16) 100% (16-16) 100% ATTENDANCE 18912 100309 Games/Avg Per Game 1/18912 3/33436 Neutral Site Games 0/0 Score by quarters Jacksonville State Opponents 1st 2nd 35 41 49 45 3rd 4th OT—Tot 34 14 6—130 10 23 3—130 INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS RUSHING Att Yds Avg TD DaMarcus James 75 345 4.6 5 Eli Jenkins 40 247 6.2 4 Troymaine Pope 33 235 7.1 0 Miles Jones 37 161 4.4 1 Christian LeMay 10 50 5.0 0 Calen Campbell 6 16 2.7 0 Josh Barge 1 2 2.0 0 Max Shortell 5 -30 -6.0 0 Total 207 1026 5.0 10 Opponents 147 494 3.4 5 PASSING Eli Jenkins Max Shortell Christian LeMay Total Opponents other out,” Hill said. “We’re just playing every play to the best of our ability.
