With UT Martin next, Hill sees JSU maturing
BY MIKE PERRIN
Star Sports Correspondent
Cornerbacks get a lot of
attention. Like long snappers — who normally don’t
— that attention often
comes when things go
wrong on the football field.
Ask any cornerback
how they handle the spotlight when it’s particularly
harsh after a big play by
the offense, and you’ll
hear something like what
Jacksonville State’s Jaylen
Hill said: “You have to
have a short-term memory. You can’t make every
play, but you have to limit
the amount of plays being
made to your side.
“Have a short-term
memory and
a good
mindset,”
he said.
“Keep
being
confident
in what
UT Martin at you do.”

a reputation, reinforced by
NFL stars such as Richard
Sherman and long before
him superstar Deion Sanders, for trash talking with
equally loudmouthed wide
receivers. Hill said he talks
a little, but it’s not especially trashy.
“I try not to be too talky,”
the fourth-leading tackler
for the Gamecocks said. “I
want my actions to do the
talking. We do talk backand-forth with the receivers and there’s some trash
talking. Some of it though,
is to encourage each other.
I’m not encouraging them
to do better, but I like to
tell them give us their best
effort and make it a good
game.”
Hill, a redshirt sophomore from Marietta, Ga.,
is second on the team in
solo tackles with 17 of his
18 stops being unassisted.
He has two pass break-ups
and two passes defended
for the Gamecocks (3-1, 1-0

who play host to Tennessee-Martin (1-3, 0-2) on
Saturday at 3 p.m. He said
the JSU defense — fifth in
the league stats, allowing
376 yards a game — is coming together.
“I feel like we have
learned how to play together. Basically, we’re learning to mature overall as a
defense and helping each
fensive coordinators David
Blackwell and Brandon
Hall stressed takeaways
in the preseason, but so
far the Gamecocks have
just two interceptions and
haven’t pounced on any
of their opponents’ five
fumbles.
Hill’s cornerback partner Jermaine Hough has
both of the interceptions,
one he returned for a score
against West Alabama.
“We’re still talking about
turnovers at practice,” Hill
said. “We’ve had plenty of
opportunities, but we have
to capitalize and come up
with more turnovers. We
strive for that every day
at practice. It doesn’t go
unspoken.
“You have to know what
defense you’re in, where
the open slots are in the
defense and play your technique against your man.
Once you do that, he will
lead you to the ball. There
are many ways you can
play the ball — watch his
eyes or, if you’re in good
enough position, you can
look and see where the ball
is. It comes with repetition,
how comfortable you are
playing that receiver and
the ball.”

just playing every play
to the best of our ability.
We’re striving to communicate better every day in
practice.
“We come in with mindset to play one snap at a
time. Three plays equal one
series. If we handle our job
every play, the chips will
fall our way.”
