Barton Student Notebook

Barton Notebook
As you work through the Barton System, we recommend that you create a Barton notebook for
your student/s with the following sections:
•
Notes: As you are going through the lesson, you can jot down notes about things your
student does well, gets frustrated on, what he enjoys, what she didn’t enjoy, etc. This
section should help improve your teaching for the next lesson.
•
Barton Tracking Sheets: You should print a tracking sheet for each student and level.
This document will help you keep track of where you are in the Barton System. It is a
great idea to add the date to the line of the skill you are working on each time you do
the Barton System. You can also add how much time you spend. This will allow you to
have insight into how long each lesson and level will take and help you be aware when
your student is moving more quickly or slowly.

•
Sight Words: The student will begin learning sight words in Level 3. This is where you
should put the student’s Sight Words lists. Instructions on how to teach the sight words
will be taught in the Barton Training.

•
Review-Systematic: All students who go through the Barton System should review each
time they do a lesson. Because they will begin learning spelling rules in level 3, we
highly recommend that you provide a systematic review for each student. This
document will allow you to document when you do the review and how often.

•
Review-Individualized As your student is going through lessons, they will make
mistakes. We recommend that you jot down those mistakes on this document for
reading and spelling. You can then use this sheet to provide review for your student.

Spelling Rules and Syllables: These documents will help the tutor say the spelling rule
the same every time. It will also provide them with the 7 Syllable Types, along with the
4 syllable division rules.

o Syllable Division Rules

(When you begin syllable division rules in Level 4, we highly recommend that you have the
student practice these on a regular basis so these too are automatic.)
o Seven Syllable Types

(Because the syllable type determines the sound the vowel makes, you should continually review
these with your student.)
