COURSEDESCRIPTIONANDOBJECTIVES
Thiscourseintroducesfundamentalprinciplesinquantitativeresearchandtheapplicationof
descriptiveandinferentialstatistics.TheprimarytextusesExcelasthebasictoolforintroducing
conceptsandprocedures.Coursetopicsandactivitiesgivespecialemphasistothedevelopmentof
analyticalandcriticalthinkingskillssothatstudentsmaybettercomprehendtheresearch
literatureinjusticestudiesandacrossthesocialsciences.Courseassignmentsaredesignedtohelp
studentsdevelopskillsindatacollection,managementandanalysis.

 Describekeyguidelinesfordatacollectionandmeasurement
 Formulateandtestresearchhypotheses

Besuretobringyourtextbookwithyoutoeachclasssession;wewilluseitforin‐classexercises
andtoreviewexampleproblems.Additionally,youwillneedtoplanforregularaccesstoa
computerwithMicrosoftExcelplustheAnalysisToolPakadd‐in.Thisadd‐inisfreetodownload
andprovidesaspecialsetoftoolsthatmaynothavebeenincludedwhenExcelwasoriginally
installed.Ifyoudonothavereadyaccesstoapersonalcomputer,thereareseveralcomputing
centersoncampusthatprovidestudentswithaccesstocomputers,softwareandarangeof
applications(ucc.asu.edu/sites/hours‐and‐locations/tempe‐hours/).

Quizzesandgroupactivities
Throughoutthesemestertherewillberegularquizzesandgroupactivitiestofacilitatediscussion,
reinforcelearning,andgaugemasteryofthecoursematerial.Youmustbepresentandcontribute
tothegroupeffortinordertoreceivecreditfortheseactivities.
Youcanexpectaquizand/oractivityduringeveryregularclasssession.Acrossthesemester,there
willbeatleast25quizzesoractivitiesworth5pointseach,butonly20willcounttowardsthefinal
grade(100pointstotal).Anysurpluspointswillbeaddedasextracredit.
Exams
Take‐homeunitexamswillbedueby5:00pmonFriday,September26andTuesday,November11
andwillincludeamixofessayquestionsandanalysisspecificationsbasedontheunitmaterial.
Directionsandexpectationswillbedistributedinclassatleastoneweekpriortotheexamdue
dates.
AcumulativefinalexamwillbedueonThursday,December11that5:00pm.Forthisexam,youwill
demonstrateyourmasteryofthesemester’scoursematerialthroughananalysisofadatasetthatI
willprovide.Furtherdetailswillbeprovidedinclass.
Examssubmittedafterthedeadlinewillbepenalizedoneletter‐gradeforeveryhourlate.

organizedaroundaclearthesisstatementorresearchquestion.Extracreditessaysshouldreflect,
extendorcritiqueandnotsimplysummarizeordescribe.
Expectationsforclassroombehavior
Tofosteranenvironmentconducivetolearning,wemustberespectfulofeachother’sviewsand
opinionsandrefrainfromdemeaningattacksandstatements.Disrespectfulordisruptivebehavior
mayresultinexpulsionfromthecourseandreferraltotheOfficeofJudicialAffairsandStudentLife.
