"Japan and Asia :Piercing the Veil"
"Japan, North America and the World"
This cutting edge lecture enables us to engage in interactive lecture and discussion
in real time from both Japan and Canada!!
In our Tuesday class, Dr. Kinjo will lecture on Japanese and Asian business,
economy and society. Thursday lecture will be conducted by Dr. MacLachlan about
Japan and North American relations and politics from geographic point of views.
Dr. Kinjo will focus on the business history of Japan and Asia, analyzing the social,
economic, political, managerial factors as well as the colorful heroes that impacted
the successes and failures. We will articulate the implications and attempt to apply
them to the challenges that we face today. To achieve these goals, we leverage
the case study methodology. You will be required to prepare well in advance and
aggressively participate in class.
Dr.. MacLachlan will cover the economic and political geography and history of
Japan in comparison to Canada from the nineteenth-century to the present. Topics
will include creation of the nation state & constitutional change, emigration and
immigration, demographic structure and aging, wartime relations between Japan,
Canada and the United States, indigeneity and assimilation, diplomatic relations,
international trade, foreign investment and multinational corporations; and the
national security challenges posed by maritime border disputes and environmental
degradation.
Lecturers will be taught in English only thus a basic level of English competency
is required. In addition, you will be required interactive participation in class.
