Building the Machine: The Common Core Movie
Building the Machine introduces the public to the Common Core
States Standards Initiative and its effects on our children’s education.
The documentary compiles interviews from leading
educational experts, including members of the
Common Core Validation Committee.
What is the Common Core? The Common Core
is the largest systemic reform of American
public education in recent history. What started
as a collaboration between National Governors
Association and the Council of Chief State
School Officers to reevaluate and nationalize
America’s education standards has become one
of the most controversial - and yet unheard of issues in the American public.

Book TALK
Friday, February 6 @ 10:00-11:00 am
The Center of Everything by Laura Moriarty
Literature with a Kansas Connection is our spring series
in the Kansas Humanities Council Book TALK
program. Starting in February, we will read four books
that focus on the modern Kansas experience;
urbanization, rural decline, and social changes in the
roles of women and minorities. Growing up in 20th
century, small-town Kansas is far different from the
same experience in 19th century, small-town Kansas.
Our first book is The Center of Everything. Evelyn
Bucknow, a ten year old growing up in fictional
Kerrville, Kansas, seeks the certainty provided by a
very conservative church, where she is assured that she is at the
“center of everything.” Difficulties and humor appear when her own interest
in evolutionary science conflicts with church teachings. Copies of the book
are available at the library. Please join us for a lively discussion.
Come to Writer’s Group!

The Good Lord Bird by James McBride
(Winner of the 2013 National Book Award for Fiction and a Kansas Notable Book)
Henry Shackleford is a young slave living in the Kansas Territory in 1857,
when the region is a battleground between anti- and
pro-slavery forces. When John Brown, the
legendary abolitionist, arrives in the area, an
argument between Brown and Henry’s master
quickly turns violent. Henry is forced to leave town
- with Brown, who believes he’s a girl.
Over the ensuing months, Henry - whom Brown
nicknames Little Onion - conceals his true identity
as he struggles to stay alive. Eventually Little
Onion finds himself with Brown at the historic raid
on Harpers Ferry in 1859 - one of the great
catalysts for the Civil War.
An absorbing mixture of history and imagination, and told with McBride’s
meticulous eye for detail and character, The Good Lord Bird is both a
rousing adventure and a moving exploration of identity and survival.

Red Lobster
Join us for our Twenties n’ Thirties book discussion of The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle
Zevin, a novel with “humor, romance, a touch of suspense, but most of all love - love of books and
bookish people and, really, all of humanity in its imperfect glory.” A.J. Fikry’s life is not at all
what he expected it to be. He lives alone, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its
history, and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. But when
a mysterious package appears at the bookstore, its unexpected arrival gives Fikry the chance
to make his life over - and see everything anew.
We’ll meet at 7pm at Red Lobster at Legends. Order drinks, have dinner, or just snack
on some appetizers. The book is available at the front desk at the library. Since we meet
at a restaurant just let us know if you would like to attend (even if you haven’t read the
book). Contact Amy at the library if you have any questions.
