INDEX GREENSBORO AREA GREENSBORO AREA PEGGY JO CARMAN BRANCH GREENSBORO — Peggy Jo Carman Branch was born in Louisville, KY on January 27, 1938. Peggy went to be with the Lord on January 9, 2014. Known by many as "Peggy Jo", she was a dedicated servant of the Lord. A faithful servant of Trinity AME Zion Church and of her community. She was also the consummate educator- teaching and counseling all of her children and those whom she loved. She started her legacy as an educator in the Louisville Jefferson County Public School System (Louisville, KY). After accepting a position as Assistant Professor of Education at the NC A&T State University, Peggy moved to Greensboro. In 1978 Peggy became an elementary school administrator in the Guilford County Public Schools System. She is survived by three loving sons, Malik Khalid Branch-Bey (Michael Lawrence Branch, Sr., High Point, NC), Stephen Douglas Branch (Greenbelt, MD), Mark Andrew Branch (Woodmore, MD); three grandsons, Michael Lawrence Branch, Jr. (Greensboro), Jeremy Stephen Butler (Charlotte), Johnathan Stephen Branch (Manassas, VA); two granddaughters, Kirsten Michelle Branch (Manassas, VA), Holland Tiara Branch (Louisville, KY); two brothers, Virgil Carman, Jr. (Atco, NJ), Keith Carman (Safford, AZ), one aunt, Juanita (Cleveland, OH); and a host of great-granchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. Ellen was born November 22, 1936, to the late David Mull and Edith Simmons Mull of Morganton. Ellen retired from Cone Mills in 1995. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Taylor Eugene Bailey; son, Nicholas and granddaughter, Crystal Bailey. GREENSBORO — Dr. Willie T. Ellis, Sr. passed from this life on January 13, 2014, in Greensboro, NC. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. Willie was born on May 22, 1927, in rural Columbus County, North Carolina. He lived 86 wonderful years and everyone who met him will always remember him. Willie was married to his lifelong love, Alice Jean Lawrence, for 62 years. To this wonderful union two children were born. Willie was a faithful member of St. James Presbyterian Church (USA). Willie was a man of strong faith who embraced life with wisdom and enthusiasm; he diligently served the Lord, his family and his friends. He was a beloved member of his community and could frequently be found leading programs for children such as the Boy Scouts of America. He also generated proposals for St. James Presbyterian Church to secure funding for mentoring and college tour programs. Following a stint in the US Army, he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and his Ph.D. from Cornell University. Dr. Ellis began his career with the Veterans Farm Training Program. He also served as a teacher in several North Carolina high schools. Upon obtaining his Ph.D, he served as a tenured professor in the School of Agriculture and Environmental Science at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where he went on to serve in many senior level leadership positions. He believed in education and mentored, advised and encouraged his students throughout his career. He was an inspiration to his students, his staff and to all whom he served. He retired in 1989 as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Following his retirement, he served as Professor Emeritus, Chairman of the NC Cooperative Extension Service Advisory Board of Guilford County, Officer of Guilford County Cattlemen Association, FMHA Advisory Board of Guilford County, NC Cooperative Extension Advisory Board, and Piedmont Triad Farmers Market Advisory Board. He enjoyed spending time with his family, his church family, working on his farm and gardening. He also loved Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc and was a life member. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife Jean; two sons Willie T., Jr. and his wife Yvonne of Greensboro, NC and Melchior B. and his wife Joyce of Wake Forest, NC. He also leaves five grandchildren, Wesley T. Ellis, Brittany Ellis, and Corbin Ellis of Greensboro, NC, Melchior Ellis, Jr. and Mallory Ellis of Wake Forest, NC. Mrs. Greene was born on May 14, 1929 in Yadkin County, NC to the late Dallas and Jessie McKnight Davis. She graduated from Pfeiffer College and then attended the School of Radiology at Watts Hospital. She went on to work as a radiology technician at numerous medical facilities. Ruth lived most of her life in Winston-Salem and Clemmons. She was a member of Boyer’s Chapel Church of Christ. An avid swimmer, she belonged to the YMCA of WinstonSalem for many years. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Greene is survived by her devoted husband, Samuel Royston "Roy" Greene of Greensboro, NC; a daughter, Nancy Greene Staley and husband Fred of Randleman, NC; son, Michael Davis Greene and wife Susan of Brooklyn, NY; two grandchildren, Anna and Aidan Greene of Brooklyn, NY. John graduated from Greensboro Senior High and North Carolina State University with a Degree in Electrical Engineering.
