DECEMBER/JANUARY/FEBRUARY/MARCH 2013-14
Saturday, November 2nd dawned clear and mild as dozens of Greensboro Beautiful
volunteers met at Mt. Olive Church of Christ and donned gloves and shovels to plant trees in
the Holts Chapel Road neighborhood. This year’s NeighborWoods Community Tree Planting
was a success thanks to a generous grant from UPS and the support of the City of
Greensboro’s Planning & Community Development, Field Operations, and Parks &
Recreation Departments; Dunlap Lawn Service; and the Guilford County Master Gardeners.
This was the 11th year that Greensboro Beautiful’s Urban Forestry Committee has planned
and implemented the NeighborWoods program, designed to restore the tree canopy in our
community.
To help further the work of
Greensboro Beautiful and the
City’s Urban Forestry program,
individuals are encouraged to
make private donations to
Greensboro Beautiful’s Tree
Fund. To donate, call 373-2199
or visit our website at

FROM THE CHAIR
Greensboro Beautiful’s annual
garden events, (the Parisian
Promenade in the Tanger Family
Bicentennial Garden each spring and
Art in the Arboretum in early
October) attract thousands of visitors
to the gardens each year; in addition,
add the soon to be announced spring
event at Gateway Gardens! While it
has not served as a venue for a major
event in some time, the Bog Garden
continues to be enjoyed by hundreds of visitors every year.
A study of the Bog Garden was carried out by five Guilford
College students and their faculty advisor, Dr. David
Hildredth, through the Summer Research Scholars Program
at the college. Under the direction of Prof. Melanie LeeBrown, the goal of the program is “to give community
stakeholders the opportunity to see what kind of work
Guilford College faculty and students can do for them.” The
five week study was funded by The Community Foundation
of Greensboro.
The students addressed concerns related to the buildup of
sedimentation in the adjacent Starmount Farms Lake;
explored the relationship of Greensboro Beautiful and the
City in building and maintaining the gardens; and conducted
surveys with some 248 visitors to the Bog Garden. The
survey and its results closely relate to The National Wildlife
Federation’s conclusion that “The nature of childhood has
changed. There’s not much nature in it. American childhood has
moved indoors during the last two decades taking a mental and
physical toll on today’s kids. The negative impact of decreased time
outdoors includes a doubling of the childhood obesity rate ..... as well
as declining creativity, concentration and social skills.”
Relative to this concern, the students set out to learn who
tends to visit the Bog Garden, how often and why, and what
the children visiting the garden learn from their experience.
A comprehensive summary of the study is available on the
Greensboro Beautiful website under Bog Garden at Benjamin
Park and I encourage you to read the fascinating results of
the study. With the success of the project, Dr. Hildredth
hopes to continue similar projects at our remaining gardens
in the future.
MED TOSS SETS RECORD FOR
MEDICINE COLLECTION IN
GUILFORD COUNTY!
On Saturday, October 26, the fall
Med Toss event was held at ten
locations across Guilford County.
Medicines collected weighed in at over
1,322 lbs. – a 43% increase from last
fall!
“This is definitely the most medicine
we have ever collected during a Med
Toss event in Guilford County,” says Tracy Roche, from
Alcohol and Drug Services. “Agencies across the county
worked for months to organize, plan, and advertise the take
back event.” “We all shared one concern – the health and
safety of our community and our environment.”
If you missed Med Toss, there are tips to disposing of your
medicines at home. Dissolve pills or capsules in water, pour
the water and any other liquid medicines into a plastic bag
filled with kitty litter, sawdust or charcoal, close the bag and
hide it in your regular trash.
Prevent poisoning of children and pets. Prevent misuse and
abuse by teens and adults. Prevent pollution of our streams
and rivers. Dispose of medicines safely.
Greensboro Beautiful thanks Well-Spring Retirement
Community for providing funding assistance to the 2013
Med Toss event, and the following partnering organizations
and agencies who helped make this year’s event a success:
Greensboro Police Department, High Point Police
Department, Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, Alcohol and
Drug Services, NC Safe Kids, Guilford Cares, Partnership for
Community Care, Guilford County Department of Public
Health, City of Greensboro, the U.S. Drug Enforcement
Administration, Piedmont Drug, McLarty Drug, and the
Oriental Shrine Club.
For more information on safe medicine disposal and how it
protects our waterways and the environment, visit
www.SMARxTdisposal.net.

ALPHABET ARCH MINIATURE SCULPTURE
If you didn’t get your Alphabet Arch Sculpture in time for the holidays, a limited number are still
available for purchase.
Renowned metal sculptor Jim Gallucci has created the first in a series of collectible miniature sculptures
designed especially for Greensboro Beautiful. The sculpture piece is a miniature replica of the original
Alphabet Arch created by Gallucci for Gateway Gardens.
The Alphabet Arch miniature sculpture stands approximately 6" tall and is 5" across, and can be used
both as an ornament and as a free-standing tabletop art piece all year long. Each of the laser-cut pieces
has been signed, numbered and dated personally by the artist. The name of the sculpture, as well as the
name of the garden, is also engraved on the sculpture.
Each miniature sculpture comes in a gift box, along with information about the sculpture, the artist,
Gateway Gardens, and Greensboro Beautiful. Order yours today at GreensboroBeautiful.org!
