August 2014 - League of Utah Writers

the Quill
President's Message
September is practically here.
This is the first summer since high
school that I didn’t have to go to a
full time job. While I didn’t write
as much as I wanted, I only had to
go to the hospital once, so I
consider it a smashing success.
During all of my car rides this
summer I listened to audio books.
As I listened to “The Fellowship of
the Ring” again, I was struck by
this passage:
“The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with weary feet, Until it joins some larger way, Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say.” Writing is a journey. We all
embark on our own writing journey
hoping for a finished product that
can be put on a shelf, physical or
electronic. When I started writing I
never imagined I would meet the
people I have met or have the
opportunities I’ve had.
Writing is an adventure. It is
exciting, heartbreaking, stressful,
depressing, rewarding, and lifechanging. I wouldn’t be the person
I am today if it weren’t for my
interest in the written word. I don’t
know if I will ever have a book on
a bestsellers’ list, but that isn’t why
I write. I write because I love
stories.
“It’s a dangerous business, [writing]. You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.” Write on. Everyone has their own reason as
to why they became writers. It
doesn’t matter why we do it, it is
always a journey and we can
support each other.
As the conference draws nearer
and my tenure as President comes
to a close, I am reminded again of
how amazing this organization is.
I’ve had some amazing experiences
and met some fantastic people all
because I have been involved with
the League of Utah Writers. As the
baton is passed to Amanda
Luzzader I know that the League is
in good hands.
