Footy Colours Day was a big success, and so was Market Day. Mike Ymer came in to talk to the teachers and students about some helpful strategies in Maths. Lately, the Foundation students have been writing stories to match subtraction problems. In Inquiry they’ve been completing their Animal Projects. The Year 1/2s have been making Konnectives and have had a wonderful ICT topic called “Marvellous Me”. The Year 3/4s have been finishing of their procedural texts and have been practising for their Soccer Gala Day coming up. The Year 5/6s have been organising Market Day and have been making the last week fun and challenging. Dear SKiPPS Community, My heart is breaking with the information I’m sharing with you all. Our much loved mother of Kathryn and wife of Doug, Lucy Buckser passed away on Wednesday afternoon. The Buckser family are such lovely people who we all adore. Many of us have been on this long and heart wrenching journey with Lucy, Doug and Kathryn and are at a loss to understand why we are left without one of our mums. On behalf of the SKiPPS community we extend our deepest sympathies to Doug and Kathryn. Jen PRINCIPAL’S REPORT SCHOOL STRATEGIC PLAN On Wednesday 17th September we participated in our school’s Review Day. The facilitator for the day was Accredited Reviewer; Jan Green who ensured there was adequate time for reflection over the past four years and then assisted us to move into a new Strategic Plan for the next four years. I would sincerely like to thank the following attendees: Year Six Students – Declan F, Ella C, Bridget S, Ned T, Lena C, Isabelle M, Charlotte H and Charlotte F. Chantel Jose, Maths Curriculum Coordinator and Year 1/2 Team Leader Lil Wymant, English Curriculum Coordinator Matt Cook, Year 5/6 Teacher and Team Leader Kat Greenham, Foundation Teacher Anne Grigg, Assistant Principal Andrew Schneider, Assistant Principal Beaver Tayles, School Council President Mette Aitken-Petersen, School Council Vice-President Brian Mills, Principal of Clayton North Primary School Cheryl Chapple, Senior Adviser, Regional Performance and Planning, South Eastern Victoria Region. After a full day of rigorous discussion around outcomes over the past four years, we have come up with the following goals we would like to focus on in the next Strategic Plan. In essence we are framing our goals around extending high achievement in student outcomes through building student and teacher capacity and continuing with one of our main values in ‘Resilience’ in all aspects of life. Student Learning Goal- Improving student learning outcomes in Mathematics - Number and Writing from Foundation to Year 6. Key improvement Strategies - Building teacher and student capacity to effectively use assessment to inform differentiated instruction - Build teacher knowledge to gain a deeper understanding of curriculum continuums - Building teacher capacity to improve instructional practice through the implementation of the school’s pedagogical framework. Engagement Goal- Increase student ownership of personalised learning and development of personal goals. Key improvement Strategies Build teachers’ capacity to develop and implement personalised learning programs. Build teacher capacity to provide challenge to extend students at all levels. Build intrinsic motivation in students to take ownership of their own learning outcomes. Wellbeing Goal- Build the resilience of students. Key Improvement Strategies Continue to critically evaluate programs within the wellbeing framework. Investigate and implement a program/strategy to reduce absenteeism and lateness. Productivity Goal- To enable distributive leadership through capacity building that supports the strategic improvement agenda. Key Improvement Strategies Implement student and data management system. Implement peer coaching to build reflective practice across the school. To strengthen partnerships to support the strategic improvement agenda. WALK/WHEEL-A-THON Walk-a-thon/Wheel-a-thon is our annual major fundraiser and so far we have raised $11,436.55. A huge thank you to Woolworths for providing the oranges and SKiPPA for cutting them up and serving them on the day. Also a huge thank you to Susan for coordinating the event with the help of our Year Five/Sixes and Teachers. We were extremely proud of Ella B and her achievement at the Walk-a-thon. Ella walked two laps of the oval without a walking frame or with the support of someone. This was an amazing accomplishment as her goal was to walk one lap unassisted and after achieving that in 40 minutes she said she was up for another lap and did it in just under 20 minutes. I am so impressed by her determination and resilience. Our integration Aides in Fiona, Amanda, Indira and Jess support and encourage Ella to achieve great things. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT TRIVIA EVENING – Our Fundraising team which includes SKiPPA, Kirstin, Mandee, Cathy and Catherine and our teachers, Kat, Chantel, Susan and Matt have achieved a fun parent and staff evening that has also raised considerable funds for our school. We also had some of our wonderful parents in Sally who made the Dips and Shannon who donated slices (as did Kirstin). Catherine, Ruth and Karen chased up Donations. Fantastic evening that raised over $12,000 for our school. MATHS EVENING – Thank you Chantel, with the help of our teachers for putting together such a fun and interactive Maths Evening for many of our families. Parents interacted with their children to do activities that are easily transferable to home. SKIPPS ORCHESTRA Last Friday morning we had our first ‘Orchestra Performance’ at Assembly with interested students and parents at SKiPPS. It was very good and great to see some parents performing with their children. Once again thanks to Rosie, Helen and Marjorie for their efforts. SISTER SCHOOL ITALY Here’s an update about where we are at with our Sister School Planning is at. We are very excited to have Tilka make her way over there next term. Whilst we are very sad to see her leave us until the end 2015, we are very excited to have such a wonderful resource in Italy at our fingertips. Tilka will go a long way to strengthen our partnership with Sacro Cuore Primary School in Novara, Italy and will help us set up for our student Study Tour visit in April/May 2015. We are taking over a group of 10 selected Year Six students in the company of Anne Grigg, Jen McCrabb and Joe Masci to visit Rome, Venice, Orvieto and Novara, as well as attending the World Expo in Milan to present their project work. These Year Six students have demonstrated confidence and personal independence, shown an aptitude to learn Italian and a wiliness to represent our school both here and in Italy. The planning, implementation and payment schedule is all going along smoothly, thanks to the efforts of Anne. LONG SERVICE LEAVE – 1 WEEK Next term we welcome back Rosie and Jenny K from their well-deserved overseas holidays. In Lil and Rosie’s absence we have had Ashlee teach our Year 1/2 students with such aplomb. Ashlee has transitioned into our school so well and we can’t thank her enough for her dedication and passion she has towards the students in her care. We’ll see Ashlee very soon next term, this time covering Katie’s class for the first week. On Monday 6th October I am taking Long Service Leave for a week to spend time at St Francis Xavier Catholic School in Daly River, Northern Territory. In essence the school consists of an enrolment of 79 students from Preschool to Year 12, although attendance is usually around 50%. The school is very much a community hub. The Principal plays a very important role in the community and attends Daly River Council meetings and town forums on a regular basis. The school runs a ‘Breakfast Morning Program’ that provides breakfast and healthy practices such as brushing teeth, daily washing and exercising. During my visit I will be liaising with Julie Leonard – Curriculum Coordinator who will be showing me the school’s Instructional Practice, especially with Accelerated Literacy – as their English Additional Language – Dialect is a major focus to improve student outcomes. Julie is also very excited about the visit from an Apple Consultant who is delivering 20 iPads to investigate ways to engage teachers and students in IT across the school during my stay. Many students that reach Year 8 transfer to schools across Australia to complete their education. I’m very much looking forward to this venture to gain a better understanding of Indigenous youth in education and the opportunities targeted programs and initiatives can have on student outcomes. In my absence Anne and Andrew will be Acting Principal. I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday and come back with a spring in your step for a fantastic Fourth Term. We have so much happening… not long until Celebration of the Arts! May we embrace every day spent with our loved ones. Jen McCrabb, Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Serena, Our Italian Assistant In 2013 we applied to CO.AS.IT to have a Language Assistant to work with Joe to create a vibrant Italian atmosphere in our classrooms. This was a joint application between us and Brighton Primary School, who also teach Italian. We were successful in this and we have been very lucky to have Serena work at SKiPPS since May this year. Serena works there for three days each week and two days with us. What a wonderful opportunity it is for our Italian speakers to practise their language skills; and for those of us on the learning journey it has been a wonderful opportunity to hear Italian conversation. Another view into Italian culture is also appreciated. Serena helps in each class by providing extra conversation with the children. She helps Joe with preparation for his classes- research, resource making. Her ideas around Italian recipes have been REALLY helpful! Serena and Joe working with Ava and Nitsa in Italian class this week. Have a wonderful Term 3 holiday! Anne Grigg, Curriculum Hats for Term Four! ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Walk to School in October When we return to school in term four, Vic Health is encouraging all students to walk to school for the month of October. It is pleasing to see how many students already walk, ride or scoot to school. For those students who live too far away to walk the whole way, consider dropping off your child five minutes away to meet up with a friend so they can walk the rest. Walking to and from school can help children get the daily physical activity they need – and there are plenty of other benefits too. Walking to school can help to reduce traffic congestion, parking difficulties and the associated environmental impacts. Less than one in five Victorian kids walk to school regularly, at a time when childhood obesity is rising to epidemic levels. October is a great time to start walking, because Victoria's fabulous spring sunshine makes it a pleasure to get out of the house, and the car! What’s on these school holidays In keeping with tradition (whole three terms of it) below are some family friendly holiday ideas for you to get involved in around Melbourne.
