During the first year of the 6-year project, participants have succeeded in exchanging postgraduate programs among members; exchanging internship students; organizing short courses for graduate students; sending 14 faculty members to join 3-week training courses in Belgium; sending faculty members to attend the scientific conferences. In addition, leaders of Universities/ Institutes signed a cooperation agreement Annex enabling credit transfer among institutions. The VILR Network is a joint project between Vietnamese Universities/ Institutes and partner universities in Flanders, Belgium through the financial support of VLIROUS. Vietnamese network includes Can Tho University (Coordinator), Research Institute of Aquaculture 2, Nha Trang University, Hue University, Hanoi University of Agriculture. The Belgium partners consist of University of Gent (Coordinator) and University of Leuven. The main objective of the project is to develop research-based joint graduate training programs in Food Technology (Project 1) and Aquaculture (Project 2). The project’s main activities include training graduate students, improving faculty capacity, upgrading facilities and creating a network forum of related partners. The project will be carried out over 6 years (from Arpil 1st, 2013 to March 31st, 2018). Earlier, on April 16th - 18th, 2014, at Nha Trang University, the food technology component also held its first annual review meeting and discussed the second year plan. Prof. Marc Hendrickx, University of Leuven, component advisor, participated in the meeting. At the same time, a network forum meeting was organized with the participation of International University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. Prof. Trang Si Trung, Vice-Rector of NTU (left edge), at the first review meeting at Hue University Institute of Aquaculture Visits the Central Vietnam April 14th - 20th, 2014: To promote scientific research and technology transfer, the Institute of Aquaculture has sent a delegation to Central provinces of Vietnam such as Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai, Quang Nam, and Da Nang to obtain practical experience and discussed cooperation possibilities with local aquaculture professionals. At the working sessions, the Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development, Departments of Science and Technology from these provinces requested that the Institute implement research projects, short-term training courses and aquaculture technology transfer on a number of high economic value aquatic species with replicability for local communities. 1 THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER OF NHA TRANG UNIVERSITY - june 2014 Vol.2-2014 EXTERNAL COLLABORATION Short Courses for International Students In recent years, international students from many countries such as Rwanda, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Thailand have come to attend short courses or degree programs at NTU. In early 2014, NTU received two groups of students under the student exchange programs with international partners. They are 9 students from the University of Jana Evangelista Purkyne - UJEP (Czech Republic) and 30 students from Udon Thani Rajabhat University - UDRU (Thailand). The graduate students of UJEP, attended the International Summer Program (I-Summer) from February to June 2014 with subjects such as Environment, Marine Biology, Coastal Management, Business Economic, Cultural, Tourism and Arts of Vietnam. The credits (at least 20) accummulated from these courses will be added to their study program at UJEP. The student exchange program with UJEP started in 2009. Courses and student services have been improved to better match students’ needs. Czech students have always showed positive feedback about the program. For Thai students, this is the first student exchange course implemented after the signing of the MoU in 2011. The course started in March and ended in June 2014 with four subjects, 12 credits, focusing on the theme of culture and tourism in order to provide practical knowledge for Thai students who major in Vietnamese Language for Tourism at UDRU. During their time at Nha Trang University, the international students participated in many cultural activities with Vietnamese students. NTU also organized field trips to different areas such as Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue, and Da Lat, as well as visiting local businesses to help students improve their professional knowledge, and enhance their understanding of the socio-economic and cultural life of Vietnamese. The short training courses are evidences of the growth and increasing capacity of NTU staff in the way of integration and development, enhancing mutual understanding between Vietnamese students and International students, making an important contribution to strengthening the position of NTU in Vietnam and in the world. UJEP students on field trips Thai students wearing Ao Dai at the closing ceremony June 2014, Nha Trang University 2 THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER OF NHA TRANG UNIVERSITY - june 2014 Vol.2-2014 EXTERNAL COLLABORATION Strengthening Cooperation with the Fisheries Training Programme, United Nations University At the end of March 2014, an NTU delegation led by Rector Vu Van Xung visited and worked with the Fisheries Training Programme, United Nations University (UNU-FTP) in Iceland. This trip aimed at strengthening our existing co- Rector Vu Van Xung (center) and Dean of Food Technology Faculty – Dr. Vu Ngoc Boi (left) at the United Nations University operation which started in 2001. Annually, UNU-FTP granted short training programs for one or two NTU faculties in Fishing Technology, Sustainable Aquaculture, Quality Management and Aquatic Product Processing, Aquatic Resource Assessment and Fishery Planning and Policies. UNU-FTP has also graduated two PhDs for the Faculty of Food Technology of NTU. Accordingly, within five years (2013-2018), UNUFTP will provide NTU faculties with two yearly scholarships for attending short training programs in Iceland for 6 months; support NTU in holding workshops on Aquaculture and Food Processing Technology; and, support NTU in training masters and Ph.Ds. During the visit, the delegation also worked with Icelandic Food and Biotech R&D (Matis) to discuss research and training activities in the field of food technology. Extending Collaboration with Ohio University, U.S. The international business consulting project, a cooperation between the Faculty of Economics - Nha Trang University and the Global Leadership Center (GLC) - Ohio University (U.S.), took place at NTU from May 10th to May 25th, 2014. This annual activity commenced in 2009, The Faculty of Economics students and GLC students practiced providing consulting services to a number of businesses in Vietnam (i.e.Harley Davidson Company, Unigen Corporation, and Sunrise Hotel, this year). The Ohio University team including 19 students and 6 faculty members had taken field trips to enterprises with lecturers and students of the Faculty of Economics, NTU. After two weeks of hard and efficient work, students reported their research results with the participation of business representatives, staff and students. At the project closing meeting, certificates were awarded to the participants by NTU and GLC leaders. This year cooperation between NTU and Ohio University aslo expanded through the project of Fulbright alumni “Bilateral Economic Growth, Development and Trade” sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi. The two sides held two seminars “Entrepreneurship in Transitional Economies: Vietnam and Ohio, US” in Nha Trang and Hanoi. At the seminar, Dr. Jeff Wiseman and Dr. Greg Emery presented and discussed issues related to business idea formation and technology transfer, operating models, fund seeking for business incubators, and shared efficient experience of Edison Biotechnology Institute, Ohio University regarding technology transfer and commercializing scientific research results. The two seminars attracted nearly 150 attendees who are lecturers, scientists, students, business representatives, researchers in Nha Trang and Hanoi. Project participants (OU and NTU students and faculty) at the project closing ceremony June 2014, Nha Trang University 3 THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER OF NHA TRANG UNIVERSITY - june 2014 Vol.2-2014 RESEARCH & CREATIVE ACTIVITIES International Conference on Advanced Mariculture Technology June 18th-19th, 2014: The second biennial Vietnam - Taiwan Conference on Advanced Mariculture Technology was held at Nha Trang University. This collaborative activity between Nha Trang University and National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) attracted scientists from various institutions besides NTU and NTOU. This year, we welcomed participants from Vietnamese fisheries universities/ institutes, fisheries management agencies, and representatives of Taipei Economic and Cutural Office. The conference was sponsored by Vietnamese and Taiwanese fisheries companies such as Uni-President Co.,Ltd., Thang Long Co.,Ltd., Long Sinh Co.,Ltd, and Nutriad Co.,Ltd. Eleven scientific presentations covering topics such as biological features, nutrition, processed food, feeding system, management of marine species such as cobia, pompano (Trachinotus blochii), lobsters, etc., were presented at the conference. The second day of the workshop was dedicated to conducting fieldtrips to salt-water farms of Nha Trang University, and Long Sinh Co.,Ltd. Prof.Ching - Fong Chang, President of NTOU, gave a speech at the conference In particular, Prof. Chinh-Fong Chang, NTOU President, participated in the conference together with NTU’s leaders. NTU - NTOU’s collaboration began in 2005 and many NTU staff have come to pursue M.Sc. and Ph.D. studies at NTOU. Professors of NTOU have also been invited to teach graduate classes and conduct workshops at NTU. EzRAD Training In the framework of PEER project between Old Dominion University, The U.S. and the Institute of Biotechnology and Environment, Nha Trang University, Ms. Ellen Biasact came to lead an ezRad technical training course at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology. During 2 weeks (April 20th – May 4th, 2014), Ms. Ellen guided staff, master students and undergraduate students in performing ezRAD techniques. This is a technique applying the next-generation sequencing method developed at University of Texas, The U.S. Ms. Ellen and the course participants tested various DNA extraction methods to obtain DNA genome with best quality. At the same time, they also used the Illumina kit to collect genomic libraries for applications in population genetic studies. Hybrid Car Model A hybrid two-seater car model has been manufactured based on theoretical calculation methods and inherited experience from existing models. This model will be added to equipment collection for teaching and will be used for training engineers in automotive engineering and mechatronic engineering. The hybrid two-seater car model has full forward-back feature and can run at a maximum speed of 40 km/h on flat terrain, able to climb steep up to 18% slope. The hybrid power source is a combination of gasoline engine and battery power. The course helps improve participants’ laboratory skills which benefit them as they are preparing for their future research work at graduate levels at the institute. June 2014, Nha Trang University 4 THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER OF NHA TRANG UNIVERSITY - june 2014 Vol.2-2014 EVENTS Meeting Protests Against China’s Illigal Action in East Seas of Vietnam Approximately 10,000 staff, faculty and students representing the more than 20,000 staff and students of NTU participated in meetings (at the main campus in Nha Trang on May 15th and NTU campus in Kien Giang on May 17th) to protest against Haiyang Shiyou 981 oil rig of China infringing upon Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) of Vietnam. In May 1st, 2014, China unilaterally placed Haiyang Shiyou 981 oil rig in Vietnam’s marine territory, seriously violating the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea 1982. A letter with statements of the Party Committee and other staff/ student unions strongly opposed the wrongful act of Chinese authorities and confirmed absolute trust and support for Vietnam’s Government and law enforcement forces in protection of Vietnam’s sovereignty. At the same time, the meeting also demanded that China to withdraw immediately and unconditionally its oil rig, ships and planes out of Vietnam’s waters. At the meeting, 120 million VND was raised to contribute to the fund of “Uniting Efforts to Protect Vietnamese Sovereignty over the East Sea”. Vietnam’s Seas and Islands Week 2014 June 7th, 2014 morning: Responding to the World Environment Day 2014 and the Vietnam’s Seas and Islands Week 2014 with the theme “Raise your voice, not the sea level”, the Youth Union of Institute for Biotechnology and Environment held a meeting to launch the campaigns “Turn awareness into action”, and “Small action for brighter tomorrow” The meeting helped promulgate environmental protection through reports, research on environmental issues, climate change, introduction to equipment made from waste materials, etc. After the meeting, the Institute’s Youth Union members tidied up Nguyen Dinh Chieu street and Hon Chong beach. Also acting on efforts to clean up the environment, on June 5th, 2014, the Student Association members collected garbage, bottle, plastic bags on Pham Van Dong street (from Hon Chong tourist area to Mai Xuan Thuong street). More than 600 students from different faculties and institutes of NTU participated in the campaign. June 2014, Nha Trang University 5 THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER OF NHA TRANG UNIVERSITY - june 2014 Vol.2-2014 STUDENT ACTIVITIES Student Association and Youth Union Congress April 27th, 2014: the Student Association Congress was held to review activities of the term 2011-2014. Excellent achievements including the completion of a project that worth 25 million VND and various contests (Knowledge Wave, School Star, NTU’s got Talent, Miss NTU, etc.), events (Career Day, Open Day, etc.). The Congress also discussed an action plan for the term 2014-2016 focusing on student rights, facilitating collaborative relationships with businesses, and, supporting vocational activities. A new Executive Committee consisting of 23 members was elected for the new term. Mr. Nguyen Huu Manh is the new Chairman. May 30th, 2014: At the Youth Union Congress, youth activities implemented in the term 2012-2014 were summarized. The Youth Union has succeeded in organizing many meaningful activities for the community such as mobilizing students to donate over 4,000 units of blood, donating a home worth 20 million VND to a veteran, donating gifts (worth 10 million VND) to soldiers on the Spratley Islands. The Congress also discussed plans for the term 2014-2017 aiming at improving the quality of activities, strengthening and expanding cooperations with local organizations. A new Executive Committee consists of 29 members elected, chaired by Mr. Le Cong Lap. Recruitment Day More than 1,000 students participated in the Recruitment Day held at NTU on May 30th, 2014. Representatives from 6 enterprises (JSC Garment Nha Trang, Amiana Resort Nha Trang, Big C Nha Trang; Metro Cash & Carry Vietnam Co., Ltd., Southeast Asia Commercial Joint Stock Bank, and Prudential Vietnam Finance Co., Ltd.) offered career orientation advice, interviewed and employed more than 330 graduates-to-be for parttime positions at their companies. Career Orientation Day March 21st, 2014: In the Career Orientation Day “Start up with Starwood Corporate” at Sheraton Hotel Nha Trang, Inter Continental Hotels Group (IHG) introduced to students their Group, programs, career orientation, application steps, internship opportunities, recruitment criteria, and remunerations. The students then were aided to visit and observe work and services at the hotel. Cultural Gala with Thai and Laotian students April 14th, 2014 evening: On the occasion of Thailand’s traditional Songkran and Laos’ traditional Bunpimay (new year), NTU held a party for 10 Laotian students (undergraduates) and 30 students from Thailand’s Udon Thani Rajabhat University, who are taking a 4-month training course on “Vietnamese Culture and Tourism at NTU. Laotian and Thai students practiced the custom of tying a string around the wrist and splashing water for good luck to the NTU’s staff and students. The cultural exchange among the three countries helps enhance the mutual understanding and solidarity in the community of international students of NTU. Earlier, on May 4th, 2014, Tourism and Travel Management students of Nha Trang University had held a cultural gala night with students from Udon Thani Rajabhat University. The music performances at the gala showed the cultural identity of each country, the history of each Universities and the friendship, solidarity between students of the two Universities as well as those of Vietnam and Thailand. June 2014, Nha Trang University 6 THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER OF NHA TRANG UNIVERSITY - june 2014 Vol.2-2014 NEWS IN BRIEF Michigan State University (U.S.) Visits Nha Trang University May 19 , 2014: A delegation from College of Education, Michigan State University with 2 professors and 13 Ph.D. students led by Prof. John Dirkx visited Nha Trang University. This is an annual activity of the College of Education to create opportunity for Ph.D. students to visit and exchange experiences with educational institutions in Vietnam. At NTU, delegates discussed issues relating to education reform (transfer from year-based to credit-based), teaching methodology, teaching quality, student affairs, etc. After the meeting, the Ph.D. students from MSU also had an informal discussion with students from the Faculty of Foreign Languages. th Seminar on “Promoting Scientific and Technology Research” May 16th, 2014: On the occasion of Vietnam Science and Technology Day (May 18th), NTU organized a seminar on “Promoting scientific and technology research and fostering leading scientists”. NTU’s staff with Ph.D. or higher degrees met to share, exchange their experiences and propose solutions to promote scientific and technological activities and improve the quality of training and fostering leading scientists of NTU in the time coming. Cooperation with Tongwei Vietnam Co., Ltd April 1st, 2014: The Institute of Aquaculture, NTU signed an MoU with Tongwei Vietnam Co., Ltd. Tongwei Vietnam Co., Ltd. (100% owned by Tongwei Limited Company, China). This company specialises in aquaculture feeds. NTU and Tongwei Vietnam will cooperate in training and conducting research in areas of interests, providing employment for graduates as well as creating internship and fieldtrip opportunities for undergraduate, master and Ph.D. students. Seminar on ”How to Teach English Metaphors and Idioms” At the workshop on May 9th, 2014, Mrs. Amanda Dawn Hilliard, MA in Teaching English (TESOL) shared her knowledge, methods and experience in teaching metaphors and idioms with participants who are English instructors and graduate students from NTU and other colleges and schools in Nha Trang. On this occasion, the Fulbright Program staff also gave useful advice on studying in The U.S. to NTU’s teachers and students through Fulbright scholarship programs, educational exchange programs funded by The U.S. Government and other financial sources. MoU Signing with Guangxi Academy of Sciences, China During the visit of the leaders of The Faculty of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (NTU) to the Department of Applied Physics, Guangxi Academy of Sciences, China from May 26th to 30th, 2014, the two sides signed a cooperation agreement to facilitate cooperation in developing technology for LED lighting and solar power, technology for solar power in independent and on-grid systems, as well as some faculty exchange between the two institutions. German Scholarship Information Session 2014 April 29th, 2014: Mr. Reimar Müller - Head of the DAAD Information Center (German Academic Exchange Service) and colleagues came to NTU to introduce to NTU staff and students a wide range of the DAAD scholarship programs from summer courses, short internships to graduate scholarships such as DLR – DAAD or Leibniz - DAAD. June 2014, Nha Trang University 7 THE INSTITUTE FOR MARINE SCIENCE & FISHING TECHNOLOGY The Institute for Marine Science & Fishing Technology (formerly the Faculty of Fishing Technology and Navigation) is one of the seven first faculties of Nha Trang University (formerly University of Fisheries). The Institute undertakes teaching at all levels of training, conducting scientific research and technology transfer in the field of fisheries and marine science. The Institute consists of 3 units: the Department of Fishing Technology, the Department of Navigation and the Crew-training Center, with a staff body of 24 members including 6 Ph.Ds and 16 Masters. In addition, the Institute owns a fishing gear manufacture lab, a fishing work lab, various modernequipped training ships to serve teaching and learning with efficience. The Institute has implemented a variety of subjects and projects with high applicability such as: “Research to improve traditional traps to improve the efficiency of fishing in Ninh Thuan Province” (2010-2011); “Research to build an artificial fish breeding ground in Ninh Thuan to protect, regenerate and develope aquatic resources” (2012-2013); “Preliminary process and preservation of marine products - using Polyurethan (PU) for storage on fishing vessels” (2011-2014); “Apply solar power on purse seiners in Quang Nam” (2014-2015); and so on. Through these works, the Institute has proved its important role in fisheries in the whole country as a leading unit in training as well as conducting research and technology transfer. Strengths of the Institute lie in fishing gear manufacture technique; fishing technique; navigation technique; navigation laws; ship safety; fisheries oceanography; navigation electric machine and radio; ship control, fisheries management; ship management, etc. The Institute currently maintains and develops cooperation with many domestic and foreign partners such as: General Department of Fisheries, Department of Exploitation and Protection of Aquatic Resources, National Center for Agriculture, Branches of Exploitation and Protection of Aquatic Resources, Port Authorities of provinces in the country, University of Kaohsiung (Taiwan), University of Tromso (Norway), Australian Maritime College (AMC), Iceland, Thailand, Asian Fisheries Science Journal, POSMA (Denmark), and “Francophonie Sun” Association”.
