Santa Fe, NM-In conjunction with the American premiere of Huang Ruo’s Dr. Sun Yat-sen, The Santa Fe
Opera and the chamber ensemble Chatter will present two concerts featuring music by Mr. Ruo.
Huang Ruo whom The New Yorker called “one of the most intriguing of the crop of young Chinese
American composers,” was born in Hainan, China. Admitted to the Shanghai Conservatory when he was
twelve, he came to the United States and entered the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He received his
Master’s and Doctorate degrees from Juilliard. He has written in a wide range of styles including
classical, jazz, folk rock, film, dance, theater and experimental improvisations.
String Quartet No. 3, Calligraffiti, is a continuous three movement work which captures the duality of
the composer’s experiences in China and New York as inspired by the visual art forms of calligraphy and
graffiti. Elegy: Sounds Ever Slow, for soprano and string quartet, is a work meant as a lament to any
human tragedy and was intentionally set without words or text with the hope that it can be universally
understood by any person regardless of country or culture. Flow is a Chinese folk-rock piece for voice
and mixed ensemble of Western and Chinese instruments. Yueh Fei is the first work in a four part
chamber concerto cycle which focuses not only individual instruments but also on combinations of
instruments in dialogue, as well as the entire ensemble as a dramatic force. The concerto is based on the
epic story of Yueh Fei, an ancient folk hero and poet of the Song Dynasty. One of his poems, “Man Jian
Hong,” was set as a folk song which was sung in ancient China. The composer has divided the song into
several parts setting them into different movements of the piece.
The composer will conduct and perform along with two members of his ensemble Future in Reverse
(FIRE), Shelley Monroe Huang and Zhou Yi. Also performing are the award-winning Del Sol Quartet, the
Opera’s Devon Guthrie and Jeanne-Minette Cilliers, and Chatter musicians Scott Ney, James Shields, and
Jesse Tatum.
