Welcome & Introductions II. Review and Approval of December 19, 2013 Minutes III. Subcommittee Updates Discussion Dr. Don Torok, Chair called the meeting to order at 8:00 am. He welcomed all in attendance and introductions from present TFP members and visitors followed. The minutes from May 15, 2014, were reviewed. Motion to approve minutes was made by Steve Einhorn and seconded by Matthew Competiello. The minutes were approved. Membership: New visitors from the American Cancer Society, Broward Health, and Memorial Health were present. Candy Flavored: No update. K-12: Florida Department of Health in Broward County and Broward County Public Schools are working with a vendor to have signs installed that will communicate the passage of the comprehensive tobacco free schools policy. Follow Up Required Ellen Feiler proposed the TFP compose a committee to present a “Flick it or Ticket” campaign to the police department. SWAT: No update. 2nd Hand Smoke Exposure: The City of North Lauderdale has begun placing “Young Lungs At Play” signs in their parks. The American Lung Association and the Florida Department of Health in Broward will attend the SEFA Expo on July 17, 2014. The American Lung Association announced that they were awarded funding from the Health Foundation of South Florida to assist with the implementation of Florida Atlantic University’s tobacco-free campus policy. IV. Appointment of TFP Secretary V. Bylaws Revisions Subcommittee VI. 2014-2015 Membership Applications VII. New Business Employer Cessation: NSU AHEC met with the EAP director of Broward County Public Schools to discuss cessation services for BCPS. NSU AHEC and the Florida Department of Health in Broward County met with the Hollywood Beach Marriott to discuss their new smoke-free workplace initiative. Kaplan University informed NSU AHEC that they are interested in cessation services for their employees. Matthew Competiello was nominated and elected as secretary for the Tobacco Free Partnership in Broward. A nominating committee was formulated in order to nominate a new slate of officers for the Tobacco Free Partnership in Broward County. The nominating committee includes Renee Podolsky, Bob Leiberman, and Andrew Cudihy. A bylaws committee was also formulated in order to review the bylaws for the Tobacco Free Partnership of Broward County. Ellen Feiler, Dr. Donald Torok, and Kiesha Edge will serve on the bylaws committee. Membership applications were completed by new and returning members and collected for record keeping. Ed Smith passed out AHEC business cards and pamphlets with information regarding smoking cessation services. Ed also informed the partnership that there is an opportunity for the public to make commentary to the FDA; this is a critical time to leverage support from the public regarding tobacco issues. A new signup sheet was distributed in order to complete the name badge project for the Tobacco Free Partnership in Broward County. Kiesha Edge announced that the Florida Please contact Ed Smith for ordering of a name badge. Department of Health in Broward County has been awarded a 2 year grant from the Health Foundation of South Florida to assist with tobacco prevention initiatives in Multi-Unit Housing and Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT). American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Cancer” event will take place on October 11, 2014 at Huizenga Park and will begin at 7:30 AM. On August 27, 2014 a kickoff event will be hosted at the Hardrock Hotel and Casino at 6:00 PM. Dr. Don Torok reported that in September 2014 in honor of safety month pledge cards and wrist bands at Florida Atlantic University Davie campus. The wrist bands and pledge cards will state “I commit to be Tobacco-Free”. Sponsors and support is needed for an event that will take place in honor of the 100th year anniversary of Fort Lauderdale High School and Dixie Highway. VIII.
