Third Sunday of Advent
From the Pastors Desk...
www.stedna.org/pastorsmessage
3rd Sunday of Advent
The traditional name for the Third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday. The
name comes from Gaudete in Domino semper, Latin for “Rejoice in the Lord
always,” the opening words of today’s entrance antiphon (brief scriptural text
that is usually replaced by an opening hymn).
Because one of Advent’s tasks is to prepare us for Christ’s return at the end of
time, this season once had a penitential quality similar to that of Lent. Gaudete
Sunday with its rose vestments and relaxation of austerities softened the period
and gave a glimpse of its fulfillment just as its counterpart, Laetare Sunday, did
at the midpoint of Lent.
Viewed now as a season of devout and joyful expectation, Advent retains very little of its old penitential
focus, but we still have the option of using the liturgical color of rose today as we rejoice that Christmas
is near, and Christ’s second coming is nearer than it was yesterday.
***************
Our Tri-Parish Communal Advent Reconciliation Service with individual confessions will take place on
Tuesday, December 16th, at 7:30 p.m. As you make your personal preparations for Christmas, I invite
you to join us in receiving the healing power of Jesus and the gift of God’s grace in the Sacrament of
Reconciliation. Please plan on joining your parish community on December 16th. If this date is
inconvenient for you, our neighboring Arlington Heights parishes will also be offering confessions. On
Monday, December 15th, Our Lady of the Wayside will be hearing confessions at 7:30 p.m., and on
Wednesday, December 17th, St. James will be hearing confessions at 7:30 p.m. Because of the three
opportunities being offered for confessions this week by all the priests of our three parishes there
will be no confessions heard here at St. Edna on Saturday, December 20th. Please make a note of
this.
***************
“Your generous contribution helps us to care for our retired sisters and enables our younger sisters to
continue in active ministry,’ writes a religious sister. Your gift to today’s collection for the Retirement
Fund for Religious provides vital support for the retirement needs of senior sisters, brothers, and
religious order priests. It also helps ensure that younger members can continue the good works of their
elders!

Santa Claus and St. Nicholas
Everybody loves Santa Claus. He embodies holiday cheer, happiness, fun and gifts---warm happy
aspects of the Christmas season. How do Santa Claus and St. Nicholas differ?
Santa Claus belongs to childhood;
St. Nicholas for all of life.
Santa Claus, as we know him, was developed to boost Christmas Sales
---the commercial Christmas message;
St. Nicholas told the story of Christ and peace, and goodwill toward all
---the hope-filled Christmas message.
Santa Claus encourages consumption;
St. Nicholas encourages compassion.
Santa Claus appears each year to be seen and heard for a short time;
St. Nicholas is part of the communion of saints, surrounding us always
with prayer and example.
Santa Claus flies through the air---from the North Pole;
St. Nicholas walked the earth---caring for those in need.
Santa Claus, for some, replaces the Babe of Bethlehem;
St. Nicholas, for all, points to the Babe of Bethlehem.
Santa Claus isn’t bad;
St. Nicholas is just better.
---J. Rosenthal & C. Myers

Finally, I just want to thank everyone in our parish for turning in your Jewel “Saver Stamps” that
enabled us to get three complete sets of the Cuisinart Stainless Cookware. The value of these thirty
pieces is $1,200! There is still time to turn your stamps in if you have not yet done so, as the promotion
will be ending on December 25th (Christmas Day). You can either drop them off at the Parish Office, or
put them in an envelope marked “Parish Office” and place them in the collection basket on Saturday or
Sunday. You’ll see these beautiful sets of cookware at some point in the future. Thanks again for your
participation in this community-wide project.
Wishing all in our parish a happy Advent and a time filled with joyful patience and anticipation!

Other GiveCentral Questions…
If I contribute using a paper check, is there a cost to the parish?
A fee is charged for every personal check processed by the bank. There are also costs
incurred in the recording of personal contributions made to St. Edna.
How will my use of GiveCentral help my parish?
Statements of deposits are available to the parish on a daily basis. There is less need
for the handling of contributions by staff. Regularly scheduled contributions assist the
parish in budgeting and paying bills. Visit www.givecentral.org or www.stedna.org to
set up.
I would like to participate in the offertory as the basket is passed. What can I use?
Some parishioners who are already contributing electronically through GiveCentral
have chosen to continue receiving envelopes, marking the “give electronically” box.
There are also cards in the information racks in the narthex that can be placed in the
collection basket in place of a contribution envelope.
Go to www.stedna.org or www.givecentral.org to set up electronic donations.

December 14, 2014

can make paperless donations, using your credit card, debit card or electronic checking payments for either one-time or recurring donations. GiveCentral is a safe and secure way to

pay bills and make charitable donations electronically. We want to provide you with that same
convenient option at St. Edna.
Please visit “Donate” or “GiveCentral” at

Income for Life for You...
Benefit for the Future of Our Parish
A charitable gift annuity is an extraordinary way to make a gift, increase your
income, and slice your tax bill - all in one transaction! The Archdiocese of
Chicago’s charitable gift annuity program was created as a service to our
parishioners who have expressed a desire to make a gift of significance while still
retaining income from the gift during their lives.
A charitable gift annuity provides:
 Income for Life - at attractive payout rates
 Tax Deduction Savings - a large part of what you donate is a deductible
charitable gift
 Tax-Free Payout - a significant portion of your payments is tax-free
 Personal Satisfaction - knowing that your gift will benefit the Church for
years to come
Gift annuity rates are determined by the age of the person or persons who receive
the income payments. Call Patti Condon in the Archidocesan Office of
Stewardship and Development at 312-534-7311; she would be happy to discuss
your gift in greater detail and send you a free gift illustration.

Stewardship Bulletin Reflection
December 14, 2014
Third Sunday of Advent
In his letter to the Thessalonians, our second
reading for this, the Third Sunday of Advent, St.
Paul gives us a summary of what it means to be
a good steward: “Rejoice always. Pray without
ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks.” That
may seem simplistic, admittedly difficult, but
those are indeed at the heart of a stewardship way of life.
It is worth noting as we prepare for the coming of the Christ child that stewardship
is both a happy and positive way of living. It is happy because good stewards,
through focusing on gratitude, view life in an upbeat and encouraging way. As a
result they are not blessed because they are stewards, but they are exceedingly
happy because they view all as gift and all with gratefulness.
Paul goes on to say that it is God’s will that we live like this. That does not mean
that it is a mandate or an order from the Lord — He granted each of us free will.
Nevertheless, because it is God’s will, rather than we must do it, we are able to do
it with God’s help. During this Advent season, as Christmas approaches, is the
perfect time for us to commit to lives of stewardship. By turning to God and
trusting in the Lord, we can achieve this.

The Christmas Story at St. Edna
Hats, Gloves, and Socks
We all are familiar with the Story of Christmas as told in
Luke’s Gospel: “This day a Savior has been born.”
The Story of Christmas at St. Edna is different than the story
in Luke’s Gospel, but like the former, it is about a savior. The
savior in this stor y is not one per son, but the many people
at St. Edna who help the poor, the homeless, and the hungry throughout the year by
donating a bag of food on the third Sunday of each month. Your support is most
appreciated. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
Thanking you is only part of the story. The rest of the story is not yet written.
Sometimes I am asked if St. James and St. Edna really need all that food.
Unfortunately, the answer is yes and more. Currently, the food pantries serve more
than 1600 families each month. Providing food for the poor, the homeless, and the
hungry is and will continue to be an on-going ministry. Thus, I ask you to continue
to be generous.

A Hats, Gloves, and Socks Kind of Christmas
As in past years, St. Edna’s parishioners are invited to participate in “A Hats,
Gloves, and Socks Kind of Christmas”. As the Christ Child was wrapped in
swaddling clothes to keep Him warm, we would like to wrap the homeless in Hats,
Gloves, or Socks. To do this we need your help. In December , I am asking you
to place a Hat, Gloves, or Socks in the bag of food that you so generously give.
The next food collection is the weekend of December 14, 2014. Please bring a
bag of food with you when you come to church. Also, please make a
contribution to St. James using the gold envelopes each month.
Merry Christmas

ST. EDNA PRISON MINISTRY PRESENTS:
“INFORMATION ABOUT THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM”
Going through the process of having a loved one facing imprisonment or already caught up
in the criminal justice system, is a frightening and frustrating experience. Where do you
turn?
The St. Edna Prison Ministry offers a free opportunity to parishioners to learn about how the
criminal justice system works and provide referrals to local agencies which specialize in
substance abuse, anger management/domestic violence, gambling problems, etc. Perhaps
you may be looking for someone to prayerfully meet with and discuss such issues.
Meetings are scheduled on an as-needed basis and are located at St. Edna.

Elaine Carver, President, St. Edna Outreach
St. Edna Community Table is a subsidiary ministry of the
Outreach Ministry under Human Concerns whose mission is:
To welcome and serve all who seek nourishment and fellowship.
Recently the team members of SECT visited with all of the councils and commissions here at St.
Edna to share information about this important ministry. We have successfully completed our
inaugural season this past September. The meetings with the various councils and commissions were
successful in communicating and inviting/inspiring other St. Edna ministries to partner with the
SECT team for next summer’s dinners. This is the second in a series of articles that address
“Frequently Asked Questions” which were shared with the councils and commissions.
Q: What are the specific volunteer opportunities?
A: Your group would be asked to assist with the following:
 Sponsorship/preparation: Sponsor a Summer Supper by raising funds to purchase the food for the
meal OR prepare the food and bring it to St. Edna at the designated time
 Set-up and décor: Decorate our Doherty Center dining room (creativity is encouraged!), and set
up for food service (set tables, last-minute food preparation, set up serving lines, set up drinks
station, etc.)
 Service: Serve food and drinks to our clientele, and attend to their needs as required
 Carry-outs: Prepare “goodie bags” for our clientele, consisting of items that are useful for them
such as prepared foods like granola bars, bottles of water and toiletries like deodorant and tooth
paste
 Clean-up: clear tables, wash, dry and put away dishes, return the dining and kitchen areas to their
original/clean state

Make yourself a prophet
As Christians, we have a long biblical history of God
speaking through prophets such as Isaiah, Jeremiah,
and Ezekiel. Although divinely inspired, the prophets
faced a tough job. Often they begged, encouraged,
cajoled, harangued, and otherwise urged the people to
turn away from anything that separated them from God
and one another. They beseeched the people to return
to God and make right a society suffering from misuse
of power, injustice, and indifference. The prophets
remind us that God is always present, reaching out with
love. How will you accept God’s love today and share
it with others?

Patience, people
After some weeks of Advent, you may find yourself
struggling to maintain the mood of waiting and
expectation when all the world is already at the height
of celebrating a winter holiday. We need such secular
celebrations (even under the title of Christmas!) to
deepen the bonds of friendship and generosity.
However, the Christian also needs a strong spirit of
stillness to tell the difference between these
celebrations and the quiet, gentle, purple time of
longing. Otherwise, when Christmas arrives all you’ll
have left to offer is fatigue—not much of a joyous
welcome for Christ.

Seek stillness
Every country has its unique Christmas traditions, but
the Philippines beats them all in terms of the length of
its Christmas season, which starts as early as
September and lasts into January. The official church
observance in the Philippines begins today with nine
days of devotion called Simbang Gabi (Filipino for
“Night Mass”). Mass is held before sunrise, originally
to accommodate farmers who are busy with the harvest
this time of year. During the hectic pace of the
holidays, try to carve out peaceful moments of quiet to
reflect on the meaning of the season.

The excitement grows
Wonderful events can leave us breathless beyond an
exclamation of delight: Oh! Similarly, wonder in the
divine Presence influences us in prayer: O Lord. As
early as the sixth century, the Great O Antiphons of
Advent have been chanted in the church to express
A
W
www.stedna.org/furtheringourfaith
growing excitement during the last seven days of
Advent. The title of each antiphon begins with the
interjection “O” followed by a name mentioned in
scripture as an attribute for Christ. They were formed
into a song in the 12th century, “Veni, Veni
Emmanuel,” and translated 700 years later as “O
Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” We pray today: O
Wisdom, ancient and new, help your church to combine
tradition with new understanding.

Our God saves us
The title seems old-fashioned. “Lord” comes from an
era in which one man was master/protector over a
household, village, or territory. The Most High is
viewed as this kind of Lord with the universe as his
household. God is recognized as Lord in the act of
liberating captives from Egyptian slavery and
Babylonian exile. Jesus earns this title when he’s
revealed as truly his Father’s Son: liberator of a world
enslaved to sin. We pray today: O Sacred Lord, free us
from every attitude or behavior that limits our love.

Stories are a staircase
Every generation has its stories, and these stories take
us up to newly inspired heights, or below to neverbefore-imagined depths. Our sacred story brims with
surprising births from women too old, inexperienced,
barren, or unlikely to conceive. Yet the babies keep
coming, because the God of Life wills it and the
mothers say yes. In these stories, younger sons upstage
older ones, losers win, and a shepherd boy becomes a
king. We pray today: O Root of Jesse, find within our
present-day stories the seed of amazing new life.

We have the power
The world is full of sighing people, disappointed in
efforts that seem to amount to nothing. “If only we had
more money, control, say in what happens!” Maybe the
“juice” isn’t what’s lacking. Maybe it’s faith. God
invites us to participate in the authority of the universe:
the power to forgive sin. Forgiveness is the big key that
unlocks every door. But too often it sits there,
under-utilized. We pray today: O Key of David, give
us courage to give and receive the forgiveness you
have gained for us.
