Announcing GOC’s 14th Annual CPD Meeting
Dear Colleagues,
It is with great pleasure that we invite you on behalf of the Executive of the Society of
Gynecologic Oncology of Canada and the CPD Program Planning Committee to attend
the 14th Annual Continuing Professional Development meeting in Toronto, Ontario on
May 2, 2014 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. We have an outstanding array of
Canadian and international speakers who will be presenting on a variety of exciting
topics including dose-dense vs. intraperitoneal chemotherapy for advanced ovarian
cancer; management of clear cell cancer of the ovary; the role of adjuvant therapy in
uterine sarcoma; management of low-risk early-stage cervical cancer; Avastin in
recurrent cervical cancer; and survivorship following pelvic exenteration.
Dr. Noriyuki Katsumata (Japan) and Dr. Diane Provencher will discuss the merits of
carboplatin and dose-dense taxol vs. intraperitoneal chemotherapy for advanced
ovarian cancer. Dr. Paul Hoskins will provide an update on management of clear cell
cancer of the ovary.
Dr. Tracey Schefter (Denver) and Dr. Martee Hensley (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer
Center) will discuss the pros/cons of treating uterine sarcoma with adjuvant radiation
vs. chemotherapy.
In the cervical cancer section, Dr. Michael Frumovitz of MD Anderson Cancer Center
(Houston) will discuss management of low-risk early-stage cervical cancer. Dr. Hal Hirte
will review the role of Avastin in recurrent cervical cancer.
Lynne Jolicoeur will address the important topic of sexual survivorship in patients following
pelvic exenteration.
Finally, there also will be presentations on OV-21 (Dr. Helen Mackay), Statistical Endpoints
in Clinical Trials (Dr. Amit Oza), Thrombosis (Dr. Marc Carrier), and the nonavalent HPV
vaccine (Dr. Marc Steben).
Last but not least, we will have our 13th Canadian Leadership Lecture speaker. This year
we are honoured to have Susan Wener, the author of “Resilience: A story of Courage
and Triumph in the face of Recurrent Cancer.” The lecture will take place during our
social event the evening of May 2nd at the Hockey Hall of Fame…Proudly wear your
team’s hockey jersey! Other than at a hockey game, when else would you get to wear
it?
This collection of speakers of national and international reputation is impressive and we
look forward to yet another outstanding educational event.
Preceding CPD Day, on Thursday May 1st will be the traditional oral exams for the
fellows-in-training. These will be held at the conference host hotel, the Fairmont Royal
