SW Skills Competition CPD Programme

Issue 1 • September 2014
SW Skills Competition CPD Programme
The Association of Colleges South West is delivering a regionally
tailored and nationally supported Skills Competition CPD
programme funded by the Education and Training Foundation. The
programme aims to increase the number of providers in the region
who will engage in skills competitions, help increase excellence in
vocational teaching and learning, enhance occupational expertise and
support a more diverse competitor base.
The South West programme was launched at a Find a Future event on
3 June at City of Bath College which brought together FE, skills and
apprenticeship stakeholders from around the region to introduce
both the new integrated Skills Show, Skills Show Experience, Skills
Competition model and the opportunities for LEPs, Colleges
Providers and Employers to work together in new approaches to
careers education and the showcasing of priority skills.
The regional programme takes in to account the significant
geographical area of the South West to ensure providers in sub
regions are able to benefit from the CPD opportunities. The
programme includes other SW FE & Skills Providers in addition to
Colleges through regular dialogue and dissemination of information
via established links with the SW Independent Training Provider
Networks. There is also mapping of the LEP areas in the region
taking in to account their key local growth priorities and aligning where possible the CPD masterclass
offer to these requirements.

Wave 1: April- July 2014
The focus of the first wave of the CPD programme was to raise awareness with leaders and senior
managers from the sector as to the significant value of investing in skills competitions to help drive
up vocational excellence in teaching and learning.
CPD briefing sessions were held throughout June & July at various meetings including the AoC SW
Quality & Performance network, AoC SW Principals’ and Chairs’ network, Dorset & Somerset
Independent Training Provider Network & Devon & Cornwall Independent Training Provider
Network.
Over 100 delegates from across the SW accessed the CPD at these sessions resulting in significant
dissemination of information as well as highlighting the opportunities available throughout wave 2 of
the programme and increasing interest in skills competitions.

“Improving outcomes for learners and teaching & learning through competition and
coaching”- Vocational Masterclass at Weymouth College, 1 July
“Discussing ways to
A multi-organisational vocational masterclass was held for the SW
WorldSkills Champions’ group. The aim was to allow participants the
experience of competition from the perspective of their learners through
a real life ‘have a go’ exercise. Commencing with an energetic precompetition energiser (facilitated by WorldSkills Performance coach
Salvatore Circelli) participants were prepped and ready with a
competition mindset.
A catering skills demonstration then followed led by Weymouth
College catering student Jaime Foure and chef lecturer Matt Parkinson.
engage our level 2
students more and very
interested in possibly
introducing Skills
Competitions…
Thank you for the CPD
- I really enjoyed it and
was encouraged to
bring competition into
my teaching”
(CPD Session
Delegate)
The skill was to create and decorate
a cupcake shoe and participants then worked against the clock in
competition with their peers to undertake the challenge which
was then judged and prizes awarded.
This practical masterclass was designed to provide
participants with the opportunity to experience the competition
journey for themselves and also demonstrated the practical
application and use of competition in mainstream provision to help drive up vocational standards in
teaching and learning.
This theory and methodology of embedding skills competitions in to teaching and
learning was explored further in the consolidation session after the practical exercise
led by Salvatore Circelli & Mike Smith (SW associate on the National CPD
Programme).
“Thank you for the
great day at
Weymouth, really
inspiring with some
great ideas to pass
on”
