Course Brochure
To enroll in a course, obtain a course approval form from your school office,
complete the form, and then send the completed form to Human Resources at
the Wicomico County Board of Education. Once you receive approval from
Human Resources, report to class at the time and location indicated.
Please enroll at least a week prior to the start date, to ensure sufficient
enrollment numbers. You will receive notification if any class is cancelled due to
low enrollment. If you must withdraw from a course, please call Sherri Hynes at
410-677-4570.
There are no fees for continuing professional development
courses for Wicomico County employees.
The cost is $50 per credit hour for all those not employed by
WCBOE.

will create technology-rich environments to better communicate with
students and parents through our Aspen X2 portal. Participants will
also explore best practices for using this tool and will work

Participants will acquire or renew skills required of athletic coaches. At
the completion of the course, they will be able to provide appropriate
first aid treatment for common athletic injuries, apply preventative
taping, and use protective equipment. They will increase their
understanding of appropriate care of lower and upper extremity
injuries, head and neck injuries, and internal and congenital injuries.

In this hybrid course, participants in WCPS Title I schools will learn the
basics of using CompassLearning Odyssey, a web-based learning
program, with their students in the areas of reading and math. They
will learn how to build assignments and create assessments that are
both diagnostic and prescriptive. The URL for CompassLearning
Odyssey for WCPS is: http://compass.wcboe.org. This is a hybrid
course and assignments outside class time are required to complete 15
hours.

In this course participants will work collaboratively to create
instructional geocaching activities. Participants will also explore best
practices for using geocaching with students and will create a
management plan to implement. Participants will work collaboratively

Participants will learn how to create Hot Lists, Treasure Hunts, and
WebQuests using Microsoft Office software, specifically Microsoft Word.
In addition to learning how to use the software, participants will review
scientifically based research concerning the structure of Hot Lists,
Treasure Hunts, and WebQuests. They will create their own Internet
activities to promote higher-level thinking skills in their students.
Participants should have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and
Internet browsing before registering for this class.

This course will provide a basic introduction to the use of Microsoft
Word for classroom management and use with students. Participants
will learn to format a document as well as use many of the tools such
as automatic numbering, templates, macros, etc. In addition,
participants will be introduced to the concept of mail merge.

In this professional development activity, participants will develop a
necessary understanding for the use of PowerPoint 10 for classroom
management with students and other professionals. Participants will
become familiar with the use of templates, auto layouts and
placeholders to create a simple presentation. Students will use basic
file commands including save, open, close and print. Will be proficient
in the ability to add, move and delete slides. Students will create a
presentation which will incorporate clip arts, drawings audio and video
in their slides. These slides will be able to align, stack group and
ungroup objects on the slides.

teachers) will explore ways to use a Web 2.0 tool, VoiceThread
(http://voicethread.com/), in their classrooms in all content areas.
They will learn how to create VoiceThreads that are student centered –
made by students to publish information and demonstrate
understanding of a topic, as well as VoiceThreads that are teacher
centered – made by teachers for their students as an instructional tool.

global exchanges for their students. They will examine resources for

Participants will study and discuss comprehensive brain research
materials and how they relate to reading. They will analyze the role of
language, the components of the language process, the use of oral and
written languages and the influence of language proficiency in the
acquisition of reading. Instructional options for vocabulary and
cognitive concepts, phonemic awareness, and a balanced literary
program are a major emphasis. The relationship between reading and
writing across the curriculum is an additional area of exploration in this
required course for elementary recertification.

Participants will develop and practice technology skills to ensure that
they are technology literate through an on-line course. They will
produce products using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel,
Kidspiration/Inspiration, the Internet, and Groupwise. Participants will
demonstrate their competency by creating an electronic portfolio of
accomplished activities. This normally school-based course is being
offered as a hybrid with 7 in person sessions and the remaining time
to be worked at participants’ own pace.
On-Line Credit Courses
On-line learning takes a great deal of commitment and self-discipline on the
part of the student.
All online course sessions/schedules will be discussed at the first class.
