Steel Day came to Salina on September 19

Steel Day came to Salina on September 19
and high school students joined professionals at a Steel Day Expo held at PKM Steel
Service, Inc.
According to Deb Kohn, School to Career Coordinator, the 16 students who attended are exploring the manufacturing field. PKM’s event offered a chance to learn
about local connections to the steel and galvanizing industries. Students toured
steel fabrication facilities, visited 50+ exhibitors related to the steel industry and
participated in a session for engineers and architects.
In the fall of 2013 a renovated welding lab with ten new welding stations opened at
Central High School. Salina businesses contributed to this lab and continue to be
involved as a five-year plan for developing new Career and Technical Education
(CTE) pathways unfolds.
The plan involves several new CTE courses in three pathways
(manufacturing, engineering, and construction) and will be integrated
into both high schools.
This plan of action is being folded into the $17 million CTE expansions
that were approved in the 2014 school bond. Facing critical decisions,
both high schools are working with a newly formed CTE Task Force. In
September the Task Force identified priorities and visited other schools
with different program delivery models and new facilities. The district is
committed to identifying curriculum, skill development and training
that best fit the needs of Salina’s students. These are key to determining the design of the CTE facilities.
