1．聴解力の考査は、PART I、II、III、IV の 4 つの部分からなっています。
2． PART I では 15 の短い文が読まれます。それぞれの文について最も適当な答えを選
んでください。
3． PART II では 14 の短い文が読まれます。それぞれの文に最も近い意味をもつ答え
を選んでください。
4． PART III では 12 の対話を聞きます。それぞれの対話について問題用紙に書かれて
いる問いに答えてください。
5． PART IV では 3 つの短いテキストが読まれます。それぞれの内容にもとづいて問題
用紙に書かれている問いに答えてください。
6．各 PART を始める前に、日本語による説明がありますので、注意して聞いてくださ
い。
7．各問いには 4 つの答えが与えられています。その中から最も適当と思うものを 1 つ
選び、解答用カードの相当欄を鉛筆でぬってください。

Most people believe that literacy, the ability to read, became widespread in the 19th century
in England and America primarily because more people were able to go to school, but that is
only part of the reason. Two other developments also made important contributions to the
spread of literacy. One was the introduction of gas lighting and the other was the invention of
cheaper and faster printing processes. The first increased the time that people could read and the
second made reading material available to almost everyone. Even those who worked long hours
could come home, turn on the gas light, and read the penny press, the name given to the cheap
newspapers of the time.

Steel has been made for over a thousand years but the process was slow and so expensive
that steel could only be used to make knives and swords. However, in the middle of the 19th
century a new process for making steel was developed in England. The device for making it is
named for its inventor, Henry Bessemer, but at first, his new invention was a failure. However,
Robert Mushet, the owner of a small ironworks, realized that the problem was too much oxygen
in the steel made in the Bessemer converter. Mushet also discovered how to solve this problem
by adding another metal, manganese, to the iron. The result was a metal much harder and
stronger than iron and most significantly, cheap enough to be used in making everything from
the rails which carry trains to the nails used by carpenters.

Much has been written about memorable first lines of novels. Everyone knows that “It was
the best of times. It was the worst of times.” is the opening sentences of Charles Dickens’s A
Tale of Two Cities. The opening lines of Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice are even more
famous. But, the lines that I remember the best are the closing lines of James Michener’s
Sayonara. The hero says goodbye to his Japanese girlfriend and returns to soldiering, which he
calls “The only honorable occupation for a 20th century American.” When I read that novel it
was the middle of the Cold War and I was in my first year of college, trying to figure out what
to do with my life. I can remember wondering if Michener was right and hoping that he wasn’t.
He was, in fact, right for many American young men of my generation, but not for me. I
married my Japanese girlfriend, settled down in Japan, and never became a soldier.
