The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica-National Vocation
Awareness Week
THE TEMPLE AND WORSHIP
In all of today’s readings, the temple is
prominently mentioned. Ezekiel speaks of streams of
living water flowing out from the temple, watering the
desert, bringing life to all living things, offering fresh
healing to God’s people.
Paul reminds the Corinthians that their
faith rests upon the firmest of foundations, Christ himself. More than that, Paul reveals that those who follow
Christ are themselves temples, temples of the Holy Spirit; that is, God dwells not only with them, but in them.
For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple
had come to be identified with the presence of God and
the only place where authentic worship of God took
place. Jesus had a different perception. Jesus identified
himself not with the temple, but as the temple. In so
doing, Jesus indicated a dramatic shift in what it means
to worship God, to be in God’s presence. No longer was
a place to be the focus of prayer. Instead, a person, the
person of Jesus Christ, becomes the center of our worship. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

What is a basilica?
What’s the difference between a church, a cathedral, and a basilica?
The word church originally did not mean a building. It
was a term used to designate the assembled believers.
In the New Testament, church was used to identify
those who believed in Jesus Christ and followed his way.
Later the term took on its modern definition: a building
in which Christian believers gather for worship, especially to celebrate the Eucharist.
A cathedral is the bishop’s church and the chief
church of a diocese or archdiocese. The name takes its
origin from cathedra, the “bishop’s chair.” The bishops
of old delivered their homilies from the bishop’s chair in
the cathedral.
A basilica is an early form of church building used for
Christian worship. This was especially the case in the
western part of the Roman Empire after the time of
Constantine (fourth century).
Today, basilica is an honorary title given to certain
churches by the pope. Rome has four major basilicas:
St. John Lateran (the pope’s cathedral church, which we
honor today), St. Peter’s at the Vatican, St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, and St. Mary Major. In addition, a number of churches in Rome and throughout the world are
designated as minor basilicas.
Whether we worship in the basilica of St. Peter’s in
Rome or in a parish church, we seek to draw closer to
the Lord in our worship and prayers.
FR. HARRY GRILE, CSsR [email protected]
Offering and Intercessions
In this holy moment—with the consecrated
bread and wine, the Body and Blood of Christ, upon the
altar—we pray for a share in the fruits of Christ’s sacrifice. We offer to God what God has given to us, and we
intercede for the Church and the world. We pray for the
pope and for all the bishops, and we mention the bishop
of our local church by name. We pray for the clergy and
for all the people of God. We pray in a special way for
those who have died. And we pray for ourselves, that
one day, with Mary and all the saints, we may come to
that place where Jesus already reigns. These prayers of
intercession, like the Prayer of the Faithful earlier in the
Mass, broaden our focus and remind us that the Eucharist is offered not just for those gathered, but for the
salvation of the entire world. The Eucharistic Prayer
leads us from an intense focus on Christ, present in the
consecrated host in the hands of the priest, to a loving
sweep of prayer that embraces the world.
