Health PEI recognizes that staff affected by critical incidents need support and guidance. Managers are often our sys‐
tems first responders in meeting these needs. To help support managers and staff through a critical incident, Health PEI has developed the CISS managers’ toolkit. It provides links to useful poli‐
cies, articles and checklists, as well as key contacts and resources to assist in guiding and supporting staff and col‐
leagues at the various response stages. The toolkit is a four tiered model, which provides a graduated guide for manag‐
ers in supporting staff through a critical incident. It can be found on the staff resource centre at: www.healthpei.ca/
MRC‐cisstoolkit. Next steps for managers: • Familiarize yourself with the re‐
source centre site and toolkit; • Discuss the topic with staff at meet‐
ings; • Plan how you will respond in these situations; and, • Schedule a presentation on the tool‐
kit by contacting your HR represen‐
tative. January 2014 Volume 4 Issue 1 Staffinputneededfor2014‐15PBMAprocess
By Dr. Richard Wedge, CEO of Health PEI Many of you are now very familiar with Program Budg‐
eting Marginal Analysis (PBMA) ‐ a process used to identify ways to make the best use of our health care dollars. I would like to take this op‐
portunity to once again re‐
mind all staff that we are im‐
plementing another PBMA cycle for the 2014‐15 budget process. We need to continue to make smart decisions to ensure that we have a safe, sustainable health system today and in the future. Teams will be set up to iden‐
tify both cost saving and in‐
vestment opportunities based on criteria that ties in with the goals of our strategic plan and best‐evidence available. Each team’s proposals will be reviewed to determine which ones are the most beneficial for the system as a whole. All physicians and staff are also encouraged to submit any ideas directly to your su‐
pervisor or anonymously at www.healthpei.ca/mrc/
suggestions.php by March 14, 2014. It is our responsibility to con‐
tinually assess our services and ensure they are provided as effectively and efficiently as possible. We can all iden‐
tify ways to make better use of our resources and bring our expenditures in line with the funds available. We look forward to hearing your ideas! Dr. Richard Wedge QEHMRIDepartmentreceivesHealthPEI’sGoodCatchAward
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Mag‐
netic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Depart‐
ment was the recent recipient of the Health PEI Good Catch Award. The award recognizes staff and physicians who identify and report “near misses” or “good catches,” and make changes to improve quality and safety. The “near miss” occurred when an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) followed the MR technologists into the scanning room to help with a patient. The EMT was unaware of the serious safety risks involved in entering the scanning room without appropriate training. From this incident, MRI safety has become part of the orientation for new staff at Island EMS as well as part of the curriculum in the EMS program at Holland College. Everyone is encouraged to take a pro‐
active approach to quality improve‐
ment and report near misses before they become actual events. For more information on Health PEI’s Good Catch award and previous recipi‐
ents, visit: www.healthpei.ca/
