The Chi Rho News The Newsletter of Christ Church Bradenton, Florida February 2015 Lent Volume 29 Issue 2 From Father Alex “I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lord, our maker and redeemer.” With these words, the celebrant invites us to begin the what many find to be a confusing liturgical season. Some common questions are “How can Lent be Holy? or “Am I supposed to feel sad for the next month or so? I thought Christians were supposed to feel happy.” Within the invitation we learn about the true purpose of Lent and why the Church throughout the ages has observed it. Self examination: Socrates said “the unexamined life is not worth living”. He was right. It is necessary from time to time for us to examine our lives and discern if we are indeed going in the right direction. But the most important component of our self-examination as Christians is that we don’t reflect on our lives in light of the world’s standards but rather by the standard set by Jesus Christ. This is why it is important to learn and understand the person of Jesus Christ and the life He lived. Many of His teachings go contrary to the practices and standards of the world. The question “What would Jesus do?” can be a good start, but “Am I following the example of Jesus Christ?” is a question that provokes deeper thought. Repentance: This is one of Christianity’s greatest buzzwords. We read signs on street corners “Repent. Believe. The End is Near!” Repentance literally means “to turn around”. It means to do a complete 180 degree turn from where we are to face a new direction, to face God. The call to repentance is the call to come back to God. In our own ways we are all sinners and we all need to turn back to God; to his love, to his forgiveness, and to his grace. This means not only turning to face Him, but turning away from all the things within us and around us that aren’t God. Our Parish Mission Statement Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” The Clergy The Rev. Joel J. Morsch, Rector, ext. 227 The Rev. Alex Andujar, Priest Assistant, ext. 247 The Rev. Bradenton, FL 34205 NEWSLETTER DEADLINE FOR THE MARCH 2015 CHI RHO IS FEBRUARY 9th DO NOT MISS IT! Editor : Mary Braine E-mail your article to: [email protected] Lent (Continued from Page 1) The invitation also includes the ways that we should keep a Holy Lent. We should be engaged in prayer, fasting, and self-denial. We should be meditating on God’s holy Word. But Lent is a fixed time where we can engage in the habits we haven’t been keeping and dive deeper into the experiences of our faith. If that sounds hard, GOOD! The Christian life is supposed to have its difficulties and challenges. But the abiding love of God and the support He gives us is also present in the challenges. This Lent I pray that we can all find ways to pray more often, to meditate on God’s holy Word, and to think about what God might be calling us to do, not only as individuals but as a parish and a Church. Through that process we can grow closer to the experiences of Jesus as he prepares for his passion, death and resurrection. ——————————————————————————- CHURCH OFFICE INFORMATION The Church will be closed Monday, Presidents Day - February 16. and re-open Tuesday February 17, 2015. During the 11:00 AM service that morning, the Christ Church Chorale, together with soloists and a chamber orchestra drawn from the Sarasota Orchestra, will perform Mozart’s Mass in F as the morning liturgy. Written in 1774, when Mozart was in Salzburg working for the Archbishop, the music is very concentrated…only the Kyrie and Agnus Dei begin with a short instrumental prelude. The orchestration, too, is sparse. Originally scored for only two violins, cello and bass and organ, two trumpet parts were added later. The Credo, the central movement, is the most elaborate, building to a masterly setting of “Amen. Amen.” The light airiness of the closing merry “Dona nobis pacem” recalls the lightness of the Finale from a symphony. The postlude for the service will feature Dr. Bradley Hunter Welch, who will also play a recital that afternoon at 4:00 p.m. with Sheila Paige. 5 MUSIC NOTES Dr. Welch is the 2003 First Place winner of the Dallas International Organ Competition and was also awarded the Audience Prize for the second time, having previously won it in 2000. In 2005, he was a featured artist at three regional conventions of The American Guild of Organists, and he made his European debut in France performing in the Chartres Festival. He has appeared as soloist with the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. With the DSO, he gave the world premiere of Stephen Paulus’ Grand Concerto for Organ and Orchestra, the piece written for Bradley as the winner of the Dallas International Organ Competition. Additionally, he has taught at Southern Methodist University and Baylor University. He is Director of Music & Arts/Organist at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas, TX. In addition to these duties, he performs approximately 20 concerts annually under the exclusive artistic management of Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists, Hartford, CT. His first recording is the first solo organ recording of the Cliburn Organ at Broadway Baptist Church, and his recording on the magnificent Fisk organ at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas is currently in production. Bradley is married to Kara Kirkendoll Welch, a flutist in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Flute at Southern Methodist University. They have a son—Ethan Hunter Welch. Dr. Welch’s recital is free and open to the public; a freewill offering will be taken. Dr. Richard Benedum 6 MINISTRY NEWS E. C.
