Red Ribbon Week October 20th - 24th Dear Peters Canyon Elementary Parents and Caregivers, During one week in October, schools & communities across the country unite to take a visible stand against drugs and to promote drug-free choices and healthy lifestyles. The Red Ribbon Campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1995. The Red Ribbon has become a symbol of the need to reduce the demand of drugs and the commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. It has become the annual catalyst to a yearlong campaign that promotes intolerance for the use of illegal drugs and illegal use of legal drugs in our schools and work places. We want our scholars to learn the importance of healthy choices and drug use prevention, which includes not only avoiding the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, but also being more vigilant about what we eat, how much we exercise and engaging in other positive behaviors that contribute to our wellness. During Red Ribbon Week 2014, PCE Scholars will participate in activities designed to emphasize the importance of living healthy lives. Red Ribbon Week activities this year will include decorating our school with red ribbons and banners, wearing red numbered wristbands, each student decorating a hand cutout with a “healthy choice” message, and an exciting “Slam Dunk ~ Drugs are Junk” Basketball game during recess with PCE scholars and Tustin Firefighters. Please see the complete list of activities on the other side of this letter. Principal Carreras will select 6 wristband numbers each day and the wearers of those wristbands will receive a treat bag with special prizes. An exciting new addition to Red Ribbon Week this year is the “Nice Slice” award from zpizza. As part of National Bullying Prevention month in October, teachers will be recognizing students who are demonstrating kindness toward others with the “Nice Slice” award. Students can earn this award by helping their classmates, showing respect, including others, and standing up for their peers. The award can be redeemed at zpizza restaurants for a free slice of pizza. Red Ribbon Week is a great time to talk with your children regarding what they have learned about making healthy choices. It is also a good opportunity to further discuss your personal philosophies regarding health, nutrition, exercise, peer pressure and the dangers associated with alcohol, tobacco, and drug abuse. As caregivers, you have the ability to encourage children to make healthy choices; from the food they eat to how they choose to spend their free time. Together we can help all of our PCE scholars grow up Safe, Healthy & Successful!
