The International Centre of Excellence for the Art of Hand Embroidery Certificate and Diploma in technical hand embroidery The Royal School of Needlework (RSN) was founded in 1872 with the aim of keeping the art of hand embroidery alive. Today, the teaching of the art and techniques of hand embroidery is still our core aim. Our signature courses are the RSN Certificate and RSN Diploma in technical hand embroidery which are taught at our base at Hampton Court Palace (HCP), in south west London, as well as at our UK satellite centres in Bristol, Rugby, Durham and Glasgow, and internationally in Japan and the USA. These courses enable you to develop solid skills in hand embroidery and, on completion, you will become part of a long tradition of maintaining the highest standards in technical embroidery. Certificate and Diploma students use their RSN-learnt skills to work on private and public commissions including community textile projects, work for churches, cathedrals and religious buildings, as designer/makers, and in fashion. Certificate course The Certificate course concentrates on the core techniques of hand embroidery and is completed in a recommended order so that you develop and progress with confidence. Diploma course The Diploma course progresses on from successful completion of the Certificate course and gives you the opportunity to further develop your skills and increase your knowledge of hand embroidery techniques. How we teach All our tutors are RSN-trained with many years’ experience of teaching across our various courses. The Certificate and Diploma courses are taught in well-resourced learning environments with a ratio of six students to one tutor, and each module is taught over eight days. Each completed module is assessed and requires a high standard of achievement to demonstrate a full understanding of the skills learnt. Tuition is from 10am to 4pm with breaks for morning coffee and lunch. The classes are informal, supportive and relaxed, although quietly focused. Flexible attendance options We have a flexible structure with the option to start the course at any point during the academic year and to select the days on which you wish to study (subject to availability at some venues). Each course must be completed within five years. The Certificate course requires at least 32 days of tuition and the Diploma course 48 days of tuition. We hold Intensive Courses at different times throughout the year at most RSN satellites (two weeks per module). These are particularly popular with international students. It is also possible to change learning centres as the RSN-teaching experience is consistent. Future Tutors Caption 2 3 Certificate course What techniques can I learn? The Certificate course concentrates on the core techniques of hand embroidery and is completed in a recommended order so that you develop and progress with confidence. The core modules are: Jacobean Crewelwork, Silk Shading, Basic Goldwork and either Canvas Stitches or Blackwork. Jacobean Crewelwork - This is a traditional technique worked in crewel wool on heavy linen twill using surface embroidery stitches. The designs are based on the Tree of Life. You will start with this technique to learn the RSN approach to all aspects of preparation, design, stitch and finishing. Silk Shading – Also known as ‘painting with a needle’, you will learn how to work a beautifully shaded piece based on a flower, fruit, vegetable or fungi, creating a three dimensional appearance. Basic Goldwork – This technique has its history in military and royal regalia but it can also be worked to create the most beautiful and dramatic pieces of embroidery. You will select your own design to work, featuring a minimum of four Goldwork techniques. Blackwork – A counted thread technique based on the use of geometric patterns using thread thickness and pattern construction to create tonal and three dimensional effects. You will use these patterns to interpret an image of your choice. OR Canvas Stitches – Many more stitches can be worked on canvas than is appreciated. This technique is a combination of multiple textures and stitches within one piece. You will use these patterns to interpret an image of your choice. 4 5 Diploma course Followed by a choice of two techniques from the following: What techniques can I learn? Canvas Shading - Tent stitches in wool on canvas worked to create natural shading and to give the design depth and movement. The Diploma course progresses on from successful completion of the Certificate course and gives you the opportunity to further develop your skills and increase your knowledge of techniques. Stumpwork - Work a Stumpwork figure demonstrating an understanding of the use of the design and an advanced skill level in the choice, application and use of fabrics, threads and technique. The core modules are: Appliqué; Advanced Silk Shading; Advanced Goldwork; Blackwork or Canvas Stitches (whichever technique was not studied for your Certificate). Creative Metal Thread - Show a confident and advanced skill level in experimenting with a range of metal threads. Appliqué - The application of mixed fabrics to a fabric base, which is finished with a variety of embellishments to a design of your choice. Advanced Silk Shading - A naturally-shaded embroidery of an animal, bird, fish or reptile utilising stitch direction to denote fur, feathers or scales. Advanced Goldwork - Building on the skills learned at Certificate level you will use a range of advanced metal thread techniques. Canvas Stitches - See Certificate course information OR Blackwork - See Certificate course information Tassels & Cords (at Hampton Court Palace only) - Produce a decorative tassel on a wooden mould, demonstrating an understanding of construction, cord making and use of different threads and materials. Whitework (Pulled & Drawn Thread) – These are traditional techniques that are created by either pulling the fabric thread together to form a pattern or drawing out the fabric threads. This gives open areas which can be enhanced with embellishments and stitches. Whitework (Broderie Anglaise & Richelieu) - These techniques are a combination of solid and open areas with the negative space equally important as the positive space. Dramatic contrast can be achieved using a dark colour backing. Quilting (English, Italian & Trapunto) - Quilting using attached layers of fabric in a decorative design.
