October 2014 Edition

From the desk of the National President
By the time you receive this Triangle, all of the Regional conventions will be
over and we will be heading to National Convention. I hope that many of
you will be able to attend and participate in the running of the Ladies
Auxiliary. A convention is such a great learning experience. If you aren’t
sure of how to do things in your unit, come to the convention and observe
how things are done. I was able to attend six of the Regional Conventions
and that was a learning experience for me. It was really great to see friends I
have made over the last 25 years. I also got to meet some new friends. At
several of the conventions I had the honor of installing the newly elected officers. This is
always a pleasure to start someone on the road to a higher office in the LAFRA. I also had the
privilege of presenting longevity pins to several of our members. It is always a great honor to
recognize someone for 30, 35 or 40 years in the Auxiliary. Congratulations to all of the newly
elected Regional Officers. As I have traveled around the various regions, there have been
many pictures taken as I have participated in the Regional meetings. Betty Waterman is
attempting to compile a scrapbook for me of “my year”. Please send me any pictures that you
might have taken so I can get them to Betty for inclusion in “my yearbook”. Thanks in
advance.
Congratulations to the winners of our Scholarships. Nicole Marie Noble was the winner of the
LAFRA Scholarship; her sponsor is her grandfather, Russell Noble, Branch 5. Nicole will be
attending Hope College in Holland, Michigan. Sean Christopher Fagen was the winner of the
Sam Rose Scholarship; his sponsor is his grandfather, Walter James Newton. Sean will be
attending the University of Pennsylvania. The winner of the Allie Mae Odom Scholarship is
Hannah Marie Smouse, her sponsor is her grandfather, Oscar Eswine, her grandmother is PNP
Gloria Eswine. Hannah will be attending the University of Central Florida. The winner of the
National President’s Scholarship is Sean Frederick Zwicky, his sponsor is his grandfather
Jackie Dinquel. Sean will be attending the University of Illinois. It is always a great honor to
award these scholarships. The LAFRA is proud to have a part in the further education of these
deserving young people. If you have a child or grandchildren enrolled in college, you can get
the applications for the scholarships off of the FRA website. The applications need to be
turned into the FRA by April 15 of each year.
I want to send a special, Thank You, to my Scholarship Committee Sandy Robbins, PNP,
chairman; Pat Garwood, PNP, and Yvonne Hayes. They received over 100 applications and it
is a BIG job to read through the pages and pages of information from each student. A lot of
time is spent reading them and these ladies had a difficult time determining the top eight
deserving students.
We are still accepting donations for the “Bakeless Bake Sale”. This was a “no cost” fund raiser that we tried this year.
This is an easy way to contribute to the General Fund of the Auxiliary. Send your contribution to National Financial
Secretary Karen Smith. The contributions can be either from individual members or from the Unit. We will be accepting
donations through the end of October. Thank you to all who have already contributed.
As I travel to the various Regions, I am amazed at how many of the units are working with their local Fisher House. All
of the Fisher Houses can use paper goods, canned goods, laundry supplies and other items. Units can collect the items
and deliver them to the Fisher House. The Fisher House always welcomes folks to come in on special days or holidays
and fix a meal for all of the residents. If you have a Fisher House near you look into the opportunities to help them. I
have been amazed at the giving nature of the FRA and LAFRA members in donating to my project. We will be
collecting donations through the end of October or early November. Be sure to mark you check NP Project “Fisher
House”. When we have the new officers installed the incoming National President will have a different project so you
need to be sure and mark your check Fisher House. Thank you for all of the donations that have already been made.
Many of you have asked about my husband, Tom. He has been home for about two months now and is slowly getting his
strength back. He is maintaining his weight so he is not retaining fluids. He was able to attend the SE Region
Convention in Jacksonville recently. He is hoping to be well enough to go to Texas. Thank you to everyone who sent
cards, emails and phone calls.
Many of our members are ill and we don’t hear about them. If you are ill or in the hospital, please ask a family member
to notify your unit because so often someone is sick and we never hear about it. Keep us informed so that we can keep
you in the thoughts and prayers of our members. To those of you having a birthday this month, I hope it is a happy one.
If you have lost a loved one, our prayers go out to you.

It is with much sadness that I tell you that PNP
Neoma Nahill has passed away. We have lost yet
another great leader. Neoma was National
President 1993-1994 and her NP Project was the
St. Jude's Children's Cancer and Research
Hospital in Memphis of which donations
amounted to $16,000. Neoma was also the first
RP of the South Central Region when it was
newly formed. Her year as National President
began at Holiday Inn, Virginia Beach, Virginia in
1993. Her installing Officer was PNP Gail
Johnson who did a beautiful job. Neoma’s
National Board consisted of NVP Ruth Eblen,
NES Faye Hatfield, NFS Mickey Talley, NT
Carolyn Combs, Jr. PNP Betty DeClene and PNP
Gail Johnson National Parliamentarian.
During Her year, NP Nahill was able to visit all
nine Regions as well as many of the Units while in
those Regions. NP Nahill presented four
scholarships during her year.
She had plans to be in Corpus for the
convention next month. No details for funeral
services but she will be laid to rest at Arlington
National Cemetery alongside of her best friend
and husband PNP Stan Nahill at a later date. RIP
sweet lady - you will be greatly missed!!
