With Fall brings football and that means we will open the lounge at 9:30 a.m. for Seahawk early games. So come on down and watch the game and have breakfast. Well it has finally come to the time that we must increase the drink and food prices, so you might notice a slight increase in some items. We have tried to put it off, but unfortunately we can no longer. I just want to offer a huge thank you to all the volunteers!! You all rock!! If you have a special occasion coming up and need a big room, please call us. Our banquet room still has some openings. — Loni Andrews, Manager Our Auxiliary and Aerie jointly donated $2,500 for a K9 dog for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department. The Puyallup Herald published this photo during the check passing ceremony. From Your Madam President Have we been busy? You bet! It has been an incredibly busy summer at Daffodil! Melissa and Eric Holtz, along with their volunteers, did a fantastic job organizing our picnic in late August! Jerry and Linda Miller and their crew worked tirelessly on the food tables to ensure that all went smoothly. On August 24 we issued an impromptu “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge” to our members— and wow, you come through! $1,680 was raised for ALS in about an hour and we all had a blast. The money was delivered the following day to the Evergreen ALS Chapter in Kent. Joan Stubblefield and Judy Loppe were the honorary ice dumpers in the back parking lot. Both of these ladies have had ALS personally affect their families. (However, I do wish I was more visible than I have been lately at the Aerie and I do apologize for that.) When I answer that I delegate as much as I can, people nod in recognition. But I can tell that they’re not really satisfied with my answer. That’s because every leader “knows” about delegation. But most have had one of two experiences with it. They either hold onto as much as they can and only give away what they absolutely cannot do themselves, or they try to dump everything on unprepared and unsuspecting followers. The result? Burnout. . . or a train wreck. So how do you avoid the extremes and make delegation work for you? Create a culture of development. I often hear from leaders who admire my assistant’s and a couple of folks who run programs for me at Boeing. They’re amazed at how much I feel comfortable handing off to one or the other. And invariably, they ask, “How can I get someone of that caliber on my team?” My answer is always the same. Find someone with the ability and willingness to learn, and then invest a lot of time in their lives. THINKING ALIKE cent as well as I can, I give it to them. I have several folks at work that I feel extremely confident in their ability to lead at least 80 per cent as well as I could. (And probably in many situations, 80 per cent better than I could!) I spend a lot of time with them and after a good while they would kinda know how I think. I’m always been proud to have them represent me, so much that if you want a picture of how I would personally lead, I’d tell you to just look at them. • 3. If someone else has the potential to do a task at least 80 per cent as well as I can, I teach them. If someone is doing research for me for a presentation for instance, and they gave me material that was of no interest or use to me, I wouldn’t take that as evidence that I’d better hold onto that task. Instead, I would come up with a process for teaching this person to look for material the way I would. Here’s what I did with one person: We would both read the same book of inspirational quotes and mark those that we thought were good. Then we’d compare our notes. At first, 90 per cent of our choices didn’t agree. So I’d explain to them why I did or did not choose certain quotes, and we’d try again with a different book. Within a few months, we found we agreed on 90 per cent of all research material. We trained in a similar way with writing the companion work sheets. Today, three years later, my lead presentation designer, Joyce, knows what I want before I do! She truly reads my mind and writes in my style. She knows my idiosyncrasies and my passions. Because of this, Joyce can take my material and make it better. She rewrites my writing and improves what I want to say. And I agree with 98 per cent of her choices. Take a look at your delegating style when leading or volunteering here at the 2308. What are you dumping without development? What are you holding onto that’s stealing time from your priorities? If you take time to train your people, you can trust their thinking enough to let them do even the most important tasks well. Then you can use your best energies to do the things you do best. These are great things to keep in mind as we look to involve our members of Daffodil Aerie #2308. So keep up the great work everybody, it shows and let’s everybody get involved. — Frank C. Archer, Worthy President With everyone who works closely with me, my goal is to teach them to think like I do. So at the beginning, I pour a lot of myself into them. I don’t just make decisions and ask them to implement them. I share my thought processes and encourage them to tell me what they think I would do. Because of our time spent in development, I can now trust each one to make decisions and communicate the same way I would. Give away everything you can. Some may think that I give away some pretty important tasks. You’re right; I do. And that makes me unusual at work. Generally, the more important a task is to the leader, the more tightly they hold onto it — even if it’s not a good use of their gifts or it keeps them from doing other things. So regardless of the task’s importance. . . • 1. If someone else can do a task better than I can, I give it away. And I’ve discovered that I do only four things really well: lead, communicate, create, and network. I routinely give everything else, such as administrative and financial tasks, to the experts. • 2. If someone else can do a task at least 80 per -5- Riding the road Texas Hold’em Eagle Riders head to the coast Deadline nearing for December’s tourney! On September 13, with 25 participants, the Eagle Riders went on our first official ride to Brady’s Oysters in Westport and beyond. Along the way we stopped at the Elma and Raymond Eagles and were met with lots of smiles, hand shakes and good will. It was an ambitious ride for our first one, with it’s unique ups and downs, but I’m happy to say that all made it home safe. I feel a special thanks needs to go out to Gary Plumb and Carol Walther who drove a chase vehicle that we unfortunately needed on our way home. I hope everyone had a good time and I hope to have news of upcoming rides in the future. Until then remember, you don’t have to have a bike — cars and trucks are always welcome. Ride safe, drive safe, but above all else enjoy the journey. — Jonas White, President, Eagle Riders #2308 It was September and time to “Do the Puyallup Eagles Texas Hold’em.” Scones and fair burgers were not the prizes that players were vying for. It was a piece of the money pie, which is far better than winning a stuffed animal that cost you big $$$, only to put it in your garage sale next year and hope you get 25 cents for it. Those lucky winners were: First, Barry Weaver; second, Ferdinand Ahl; third, Tony Fraley; fourth, Steve Boisvert; fifth, Brad Stevens; sixth, Jackie Heitstuman; seventh, Wally Lochrie; eighth, Pat Evinger; and ninth, Ralph Fuller. Great job players and thanks for a good clean game. Thank you all for everything you do to help the Texas Hold’em crew and make things run smoothly for the game. Time is running out to buy in for the December 14 Tournament of Champions. Your $100 buy-in has to be paid by the Sunday, November 9 game. We have to receive the money and turn it in to the secretary and then get a check and cash it by the December 14 game. Please make every effort to pay this ASAP and make this job a little easier on us. Our next game is on Sunday, October 12. We hope to to see you then. — Bob Reynolds & Crew Go Hawks Let’s Go All The Way! -6- On October 16 Helping Hand House fund-raiser coming up Dinner to aid ‘Doc’ Dunlap Kidney Fund Hello. I am Colleen Horton, your Auxiliary Conductress for the year 2014-2015, and your Chairman of the DD “DOC” Dunlap Kidney Fund. Kidneys serve an important function in our overall health, but are not given much thought until disease occurs. With your help by attending my dinner on Thursday, October 16, we can raise money that can be used in research for a cure. I realize that we “Eagles” are often asked to give, give, and give. As Daffodil #2308 is one of the largest Aeries in the nation, we are pressed to give more. I don’t want you to just give to another one of our charities, I also want to give back in thanks of your support. The $10 cost of the dinner includes: Caesar salad, roll, and a choice between a beef and shrimp Shish Kabob with roasted vegetables and rice or a chicken and shrimp Shish Kabob with roasted vegetables and rice. Door prizes will be given out to guests who attend the dinner. Some of the door prizes include a wine basket, chocolate basket, and donations from local vendors. So please join me on October 16 for an evening of good food, good company and prizes for a great cause. BUT WAIT, THAT’S NOT ALL On Friday, October 17, I will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets to those who wish to make a guess as to how many kidney beans are in the jar. You can make as many guesses as you like. Every week I will post how much money has been collected. The larger the participation, the larger the prize. There may even be more than one winner. How much is won will be dependent upon your support. The last day to purchase the tickets will be November 8, with the drawing to be done on November 9. Our Auxiliary President, Yvonne Brown, has designated one of her charities this year to be “Helping Hand House.” They are right here in Puyallup. MISSION Helping Hand House (HHH) has been helping families since 1984 in a single emergency shelter operated by volunteers who were passionate about making sure that every family had a safe, comfortable place to live. Today HHH serves more than 200 families a year in their 40-plus housing units or with rental and utility assistance. Hope makes dreams possible. Dreams motivate us to become more than we are. Families who have lost everything have lost hope, as well. Through Helping Hand House they recover their hope. They dream again. And they learn how to make their dreams reality. I will be holding a fund-raiser Sunday, October 5 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The fund-raiser will be a meat/booze raffle. I hope you will all come out and support Helping Hand House. — Sincerely, Pat Jorgensen, Chairman Kids Halloween Party BUT WAIT AGAIN, THAT’S NOT ALL On November 9, I will also have a liquor raffle. A $1 donation can win you a bottle or more of your favorite beverage. I want to thank you now for any and all support you can give me for this charity. If you are not able to give this time, maybe you will be able to give to one of our other charities we are involved with. Thank you. — Colleen Horton -7- Saturday, October 25 11 A.M.
