Photo submitted The Kings County Department of Public Health in partnership with the Kings County Sheriff’s Office, Avenal Police Department, Corcoran Police Department, and Lemoore Police Department is pleased to announce the installation of sharps waste kiosks. These kiosks are co-located with the recently installed "prescription medication take back" receptacles between the Sheriff's Administration and Operations buildings in Hanford and at the Avenal, Corcoran, and Lemoore Police Departments. Many residents of Kings County find themselves in possession of syringes, needles, lancets or other "sharp" items which they may have difficulty disposing of. The improper disposal of these sharps presents a danger to those who may handle them. SB1305 which was passed in 2008 regulates household sharps waste, and the law prohibits people from placing homegenerated sharps waste in residential municipal solid waste collection containers, including recyclable materials or greenwaste, and rolloff containers used for construction and demolition debris. The law also requires that sharps waste be transported in an approved sharps container and managed by an authorized facility. The kiosks’ receptacle is approximately 53" tall by approximately 24" wide and is made using 14 gauge steel, meaning that they are low maintenance as well as difficult to damage. The kiosk accommodates a 38gallon re-usable container. Kiosks feature a durable exterior locking mechanism. (see attached photos of all of the kiosks) Anyone wanting to safely dispose of their sharps can bring them to the kiosks Av enal’s Week end Weather W armer this weekend and sunny Highs in the high 60’ s to low 70’ s and lows in the mid 40’ s.
