Canon Maggs CE Junior School Derwent Road, Bedworth, CV12 8RT 30th January 2015. Tel: 024 76 312220 Fax: 024 76 312923 Email: [email protected] Dear Parents/Carers, CHILDLINE Thank you to all the parents who attended Miss Brown’s reading/ grammar workshop. The feedback was very positive. Both parents workshops will be repeated in the afternoon to cater for parents who were unable to attend the evening sessions. The ChildLine Schools Service has recently visited all children in years 5 & 6 /Primary 6 & 7 to provide them with key messages about keeping safe. It can be beneficial for these messages to be reinforced at home. The NSPCC has developed some guides for all parents of primary school aged children to speak to your child about keeping safe – called the Underwear rule. STRANGER AWARENESS Many parents will have read or heard about the increasing number of reports to police about children being followed etc in the Nuneaton and this week, the Bedworth area. If your child does walk to or from school alone, please talk to them about keeping safe, being vigilant etc. Whilst we do not want to cause alarm we do want to raise awareness of this matter. Some parents suspected that an incident at school on Monday was somehow related to these stories. I can assure parents there is no truth in this whatsoever. As I alluded to in the separate letter sent out on Tuesday this was an isolated incident which overspilled onto school site. Under Section 547 of the Education Act 1946, schools have the right to deal with any incidents of inappropriate aggressive or threatening behaviour and any individual who fails to comply can face prosecution or a fine of up to £500. COUNTY FOOTBALL FINALS Well done to our boys football team who played in the ESFA Warwickshire finals on Thursday. Against tough opposition, they acquitted themselves superbly and played really well. Out of 4 games, they won two, drew one and lost one. They can all be proud of finishing ‘joint’ 2nd in Warwickshire. Team: Bradlee Gavin, Luke Magee, Jude Barnett, Kai Smith, Luke Tallis, Kallan Burke, Dylan Edwards, Zak Phillimore & Elliot Harris. SCHOOL SUCCESS We were delighted to be invited to an awards ceremony in Warwick this week as one of 17 schools to win ‘an Excellence in Warwickshire award’. We were the school which has had the most significant improvement and it was nice to have this formally acknowledged by the local authority. I also received a letter from Rt Hon David Laws MP who is Minister of State for schools congratulating us on our disadvantaged pupil results. We narrowly missed qualifying for the national pupil premium awards but we continue to build on our success. COVENTRY CITY COMMUNITY CUP FINALS As you might know, our boy’s football team have qualified to play in a cup final on Saturday. If you would like to come and watch/ support, you would be more than welcome. You do not need tickets to watch our game. If you wish to stay and watch Coventry City afterwards, you will need to buy tickets in the usual way. You need to be at the player’s entrance at the Ricoh by 12:45pm. Staff at the ground, will let us ALL in at the same time-anyone who’s late may not be allowed entry. We will be escorted pitch side and take up positions to spectate. The match will kick off by 1:30pm and will last approximately 20 minutes. There will then be a presentation. We will then be escorted back out of the ground by approximately 2:00pm. ATHLETICS We would like to congratulate our indoor athletics team on becoming Nuneaton & Bedworth champions. The children were brilliant and it was a pleasure to take them. We look forward to the next round in March. You can find guides to the Underwear Rule to help you have simple conversations about keeping safe from abuse at www.nspcc.org.uk/underwear.
