Issue Eight. Term 3 2013/14
T
he third term is always very busy as senior pupils complete their
preparations for SQA exams but this year has been
particularly hectic with
the advent of National 3, 4
and 5 qualifications.
This summer term will see
many pupils leave school
and move on to the next
stage of their lives. The academic attainment of Inverkeithing High School
pupils has, over your time
at the school, enjoyed a
very strong reputation
throughout Fife. Thank
you for your contribution
towards this. I hope that
you have enjoyed your
time at the school and
wish you every success for
the future.
I would encourage all pupils to make full use of
the short time left to prepare for SQA exams – to
achieve your full potential
and Grow by Choice.

The Drama Department’s
Christmas production, a
version of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”
brought seasonal goodwill
along with fairy lights and
snow to the School Assembly Hall in December. The
cast, made up of 40 pupils
from S2 to S5, told the
familiar tale of Ebenezer
Scrooge reflecting on his
life while receiving three
visitations from three
very different ghosts. As
the cobwebs were taken

Entrepreneur Award 2013
L
achlan Edwards, S6,
recently won the
above award. Lachlan beat
off other businesses in
the awards ceremony and
scooped the prize worth
£10,000. To win it he created UBC after discovering a gap in the market
for music artists who use
social media sites to promote their tracks. Lachlan
has already managed to
sign an impressive seven
of his artists after attracting listeners from around
the world. Despite working on the project for the
past two years, he didn’t
expect to win the award
and was surprised when
it was announced he had
won. Overall Lachlan was
just grateful he was given
the opportunity to participate in this competition.

SENIOR

TEAM
The season football team
have had a good season
this year. Despite being
narrowly knocked out
off the Fife Cup to Dunfermline HS (2-1) and
then suffering a Scottish

to Kirkcaldy HS, they
managed to qualify in
2nd place in their league
group. The team will
now go into a 4 way play
off against Dunfermline,
St Columbas and Queen
Anne to decide who wins
the league championship
in March.
The team also have the
opportunity to clinch
another trophy in the

for their pride in the annual Staff Vs Pupils Match
in April.

S1 FOOTBALL TEAM
Inverkeithing High
School’s S1 football team
received a welcome donation from Ranald MacDonald (Timber Shack
Ltd). Ranald, whose
grandson Cai also plays
in the team, has kindly
sponsored the team with
hooded sweatshirts that
the team will use to travel
to and from matches and
also use during warm up
before games.
The team have done very
well this season having
made it through to the
last 32 of the Scottish
Cup. The team defeated Arbroath HS and St.
John’s HS in rounds two
and three but lost to Cults
Academy in a very close
match in Round 4. The
team also have fixtures in
the Fife Cup and Cashback 7s to look forward
to in the coming months. Training will continue to
take place on a Thursday
after school and new players are welcome.

Literacy Notice
Board
In order to raise awareness of the importance of
developing good literacy
skills, The Working Group
has created the Literacy
Noticeboard – on Bottom
Bridge. It contains infor-
mation on forthcoming
events – such as author
visits. It also showcases and celebrates pupils’
writing from across the
curriculum so that everyone in our school can see
how pupils are developing
their literacy skills in their
different subjects.
Literacy Working Group
World Book Day
We celebrated World Book
Day with a book quiz, and
a ‘favourite character’ fancy dress competition, at
lunchtime on 7th March.
We have also asked S1 – S6
pupils to create a list of
their favourite novels and
authors. These recommendations can be found
on our website – perfect
for helping you and your
child pick an appropriate
book for their age and
stage.
Barry Hutchison Author Event
Award-winning
author
Barry Hutchison visited
the school this term. He
delivered a lively and enthusiastic talk to S1 and S2
pupils about how he was
inspired to write his books
and about his passion for
reading and writing.
Barry is the author of
many popular books
including the ‘Invisible Fiends’ horror series
as well as the ‘The 13th
Horseman’, winner of the
Scottish Children’s Book
Trust awards 2013.
Pupils heard extracts from
the terrifying ‘Mr Mum-
bles’ and his latest book
‘Doom’ the second in the
Afterword’s fantasy series,
which has been shortlisted for the Scottish Children’s Book Trust awards
2014.
Pupils were given the
chance to ask questions,
buy their own copies of
his books and to have
them signed.
All
Barry
Hutchison
books are available to
borrow from the school
library. For more information about Barry or to
contact him log on to his
website at: http://www.

Well done to all the prizewinners and a huge thank
you to the mentors and
staff who helped organise
another successful event.
Pupils have been discussing the importance
of having good literacy
skills in PSE. They have
reflected on how they develop their literacy skills
across the curriculum and
how they can take action
to improve their literacy
skills themselves. Their
views and feedback will
influence the Literacy
Working Group’s Literacy
Policy and planning for
how to improve pupils’
literacy experiences and
outcomes across the curriculum and throughout
their time at Inverkeithing
House Cup
Recent house competitions included a Swimming Gala and the Rag Bag

High School.
We also feel it is important to include parent/
carers views in the Literacy Policy. Questionnaires
have been sent to parents
(a random selection from
across the school) and we
look forward to reading
the results in order to help
us plan our Literacy Policy.
