As another academic year has come to an end it is worthwhile reflecting on everything that both pupils and teachers have gained. In the following pages you will see a lot of hard work, admirable academic achievements, participation in competitions, sports, events and clubs, all here contained for your enjoyment. Once again, our pupils excelled not only in academics but also in extracurricular activities. This edition features some of our pupils‟ academic achievements and their participation in school-organised events such as the Talent Show, the Science Fair, Club days, a talk given by Ms Tenia Makri and the school play „Beauty is the Beast‟. Our pupils also took part in national organised events such as MEDIMUN, EYP and Public Speaking in which they have surpassed every expectation. We would like to thank our pupils for their articles and congratulate them on their achievements. We hope you enjoy this edition and we wish you a great summer, Regards, Ms Christina Mariou and Ms Marianna Achilleos (Editors) CAKE SALE SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS SPORTS DAY MEDI.M.U.N MEDI.M.UN is a simulation of the United Nations conferences. During these conferences, pupils beDaphne Chorattidou 5B come delegates, representatives of a UN Member State that has been allocated to them. After extensive research into their allocated country, delegates discuss, write and debate resolutions. I was lucky enough to be selected to represent Brazil in the Special Conference. We had to discuss a very delicate subject; LGBT rights. LGBT is the acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender. Unlike the other groups in MEDI.M.UN, we had to write resolutions on three topics; preventing violence against LGBTs, preventing discrimination against LGBTs in the job market and workplace and protecting the rights and increase tolerance of LGBTs in LEDCs. After months of exhausting research concerning my country‟s history, LGBT rights in certain countries, religion and political scandals, I was finally ready. The first day was dedicated to lobbying and merging, meaning we had to form alliances with the countries which had similar views to our own and improve their resolutions in order to come up with one final resolution. Brazil being proLGBT for example meant that I needed to look for similar countries to work with, and distinguish the countries my views came into conflict with. On the day of the conference, I was really nervous. After a few clauses I found the courage to speak and then everything just fell into place. I was extremely impressed with the personalities of the people I met in MEDI.M.UN. The delegates there were some of the most intelligent and sharp people, living in Cyprus I daresay. I almost fell intimidated but it is so easy to make new friends there. The delegates of Belgium and Paraguay became like sisters to me once they saw I had stage-fright and helped me overcome it. At the end of these three days, we had managed to finish debating our topics and resolutions, had a good laugh with our new friends, learned about foreign customs and came one step closer to contributing to a world free of inequalities and discrimination. Would I take part again? A thousand times YES! Why? Because I‟d find myself seeing the same crazy and intelligent people, meeting more interesting delegates, understanding world issues further and of course have my voice heard regarding their solution. European Youth Parliament On the 26th April, my team and I attended the European Youth Parliament Preselection Day. As a team of delegates we were expected to research and form a resolution which we would have Melina Theodorou 5B to present and defend in front of other teams that attended the assembly on that day. Besides that, we were also expected to take part in stirring debates concerning other teams' resolutions. Nevertheless, the day was not as monotonous as one might think; in fact anyone who attended the event would agree that it was a stimulating day. Page 2 The Pre-selection day included various team building activities which included singing along to an endless list of very original songs which also included very animated dance routines. At some point the delegates even gave each other a massage which helped us all rid the nerves that usually accompany such events. These activities caused endless laughter and excitement and also helped us all step out of our comfort zone and encouraged us to acquire new friendships. Indeed, it was a very eventful day which we will always remember. Furthermore, after a week of waiting we were informed that our team was chosen, along with other teams, to attend the National Assembly in August! We couldn‟t be any happier! Louis Leonida's academic achievement was recognised at the "Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards Ceremony" which took place in Nicosia on Wednesday, 19th February 2014. Page 3 Science Fair On Saturday 3rd May, I had the honour of presenting my Science Project at the 10th Annual Science Fair Eleni Konstantinou 2A which was held at PASCAL English School, Lefkosia. I was fascinated with my project and I wanted to transfer my enthusiasm to the people and to the judges. My project was about Gel Electrophoresis, the method of separating DNA, RNA and proteins. It is used in many labs when people are interested to find out if they inherited a disease such as cancer or alternatively, when they want to match DNA to criminals. I believe that my project was quite original and important, that’s why I had faith in it and I wanted people to learn about it and love it as much as I did. To accomplish the experiment I had to visit an actual DNA analysis lab in Athens. them my samples and explaining to them my work, I felt my mind freezing, my hands trembling and my cheeks blushing as I was extremely nervous. Nevertheless, I had one thing inside me… Faith! I had faith in what I was telling them. When I finished presenting my work to the judges so many people came and asked questions that I felt lucky I could explain to them something I considered so great! When the judges were announcing the winners I couldn’t believe it when they shouted out my name. I am grateful to PASCAL for organizing such a nice event annually and I hope many young scientists like me get the chance to show the world their achievements. I want to congratulate all those pupils who stood up and presented their work for so many hours as I found them equal opponents who fought to get to the top. It was an amazing experiWhen I had to present it to the ence and definitely difficult to judges and while I was showing forget! Congratulations to: Eleni Konstantinou 2A who won 1st place in the Year 2 category, Antonia Vanezi in 3A who won the Year 3 category and Paraschos Cant in 3A who took second place. Science fair is the best way to learn and think as a scientist. In this competition we enjoyed a wonderful Saturday with our friends and we even met new people. Additionally, each of us learned something new from our friends' projects. I loved this competition and I am really sad to know that next year will be the last time I can participate! So, to future pupils interested: Just enjoy this education party as much as you can! Public Speaking The Public Speaking Competition is a competition that gives pupils a chance to speak about a topic of their choice. So this year we, PASCAL English School, spoke about all the things that Arthur Kyriakoudes 2A parents do to annoy us. PASCAL English School Lemesos Junior Team—1st place winners: Michael Rodionov, Eleni Skordis, Maria Hadjisavva, Arthur Kyriakoudes Teachers: Ms Marianna Achilleos and Ms Christina Mariou Page 4 Our team won first place. Important to mention is also that PASCAL Greek School Lemesos Junior Team took 2nd place. I really enjoyed the Public Speaking Competition and hope to do it next year with my GREAT TEAM Eleni Skordis, Maria Hadjisavva and Michael Rodionov. This year, the pupils played "Treasure Hunt", "Who wants to be a millionaire", “Fruit Salad" and many other games that involved teamwork and critical thinking. In addition, the children had the opportunity to observe different experiments in the new science lab and ask questions with regard to science. During Discovery Day the parents are also given a presentation about our School by the Headmistresses, Ms Maria Ehrhartsmann and Ms Jodi Rigas. be s to ?? t n a e?? r oW Wh lionai l i M Clubs Cooking Club Joey Nasr 2A Stuffed chicken breast with feta and spinach, or rosemary and cream potatoes. These are just a couple of recipes that the Master Chef Roddy taught us to cook. Roddy is an excellent teacher and a great chef. He shows us techniques that many people do wrongly and taught us how to them correctly. He taught us little tricks that add an immense amount of taste to the food we cook. He doesn’t only focus on the taste, but he also makes the food look wonderful to eat and he uses every last drop of taste to make the food sensational. Debating Club Debating club was my first choice for clubs because I love debating and speaking to an audience. I’m glad I chose this club as I have learned many new things about Arthur Kyriakoudes 2A debating and public speaking. It has helped everyone in the club to become more confident and relaxed when speaking. We have done many fun and at the same time educational activities. The teachers have been a great help and have guided us through many different obstacles that each of us have. Nearly everyone in the club participated in the Public Speaking Competition so I think it shows how confident we have become. The energy in the debating club is amazing and by the end of the year all the pupils wanted to be the first ones to get up and have a verbal battle. Pastry Club This year, just like every year, every pupil chose a club to attend for the six days dedicated to the clubs. I chose to participate in the pastry club which was the greatest decision for me and my stomach! The pastry club was divided into two groups. The first group attended lessons at Zanneti Creations and the second group was at Ermi’s Pastry School. I Maria Hadjisavva 2A was put in the Ermi‟s section of the club. There, for the three first club days we tried our best to create cakes with fancy shapes and colours. For the other three, our tutor took us to observe the three different job posts at Ermi‟s bakery/pastry shop. There was the Pastry section, the bread‟s section and the savoury‟s section. They were all Page 6 equally exciting and entertaining and I really enjoyed myself in the Pastry club! JUNE 2014 MAY 2014 Page 7 Glee Club As I walked in the classroom, Anastasia Serduke 2A where our Glee club was held, I could not decide whether I felt anxious or excited. I was always interested in music and dancing and I believed that this club was made just for me. So, I was worried if I made the right decision. However, now I am sure that this was one of the best experiences I had and would definitely recommend everyone to join the club. Not only did I learn new songs and cool dance moves but also gained an experience of real teamwork and made lots of new friends! Usually, we laugh with my friends and remember all the embarrassing but at the same time funny situations. For example, my team and I had to perform in front of the class our own dance moves to a song and in the end, we all ended up laughing! Also, at the end of each club day, we were all filled with positive energy. This was an Photography club Expect lots of fun from the Photography Club as it is an entertaining club. It is also a club where we Rafaella Petraki 2A learn so many things; not only about photos but even about the places we visited. We visited beautiful villages in Cyprus which I would have never visited. The Photography Club was so interesting that I would recommend that you to choose it and I can guarantee that you will have a great time watching the stunning views and taking photos of interesting and unusual things. Three pupils from PASCAL English School, Lemesos have been selected to represent Cyprus with their photographs in the 36th FIAP Youth Print Biennial, which will take place in Berlin, Germany. Congratulations to Christos Metaxas (Lonely Walk), Charis Topouzi (Church of Lofou Village) and Ghousoun Al Saleh (Blue Window). Charis Topouzi (Church of Lofou Village) Congratulations to the teachers involved in the Photography Club, Mr Andreas Neophtou, Ms Elena Potamou, Ms Georgina Miltiadous and Ms Andria Ioannou. Christos Metaxas (Lonely Walk) Ghousoun Al Saleh (Blue Window) Tenia Makri Ms Tenia Makri was invited by our school to speak on behalf of her own research and present Louis Leonida 6B her views on the matter of child development. During this time, she elaborated on the generation gap and gave many helpful pieces of advice which were found to be invaluable by many of the parents who attended this event. Ms Makri pointed out many faults in today‟s parenting methods and outlined ways that could be used to deepen the bond and trust between the parents and their children. It was undoubtedly a very informative presentation and it was fortunate I was there to hear it.. “From Primary School to High School” Worries and Concerns Charity Event at the Four Seasons Hotel with Dr. Ioannis Kalogerakis Dr, Ioannis Kalogerakis Page 8 PASCAL English School and PASCAL Greek school Lemesos organized an event aiming to make everyone aware of issues around volunteerism, charity and community service, and at the same time cultivate a more positive attitude towards life in general. ness’. His main aim is to help adults understand teenagers and deal with issues arising due to the financial crisis as efficiently as possible. An open discussion followed and guests were able to ask questions. The charity event was under the auspices of the Holy Metropolis of Lemesos. The programme of the event included a lecture by a distinguished speaker and consultant of PASCAL Schools, Dr. Ioannis Kalogerakis. The topic of his lecture was: „Convert the crisis into an opportunity. Build: Relationships, Career, Happi- The ticket – donation costs €20. The proceeds were offered for the meal of people in need which is organized on a daily basis by the Holy Metropolis of Lemesos. Page 9 Talent Show First Prize PASCAL English School Lemesos This year, my sister and I participated in the Talent Show competition at PASCAL English School in Larnaca. We were very and Alina Bronnikova 3A excited overwhelmed because we didn‟t know what to expect. Despite the fact that we were very nervous, we did well. We couldn‟t even imagine that we would get a place. Therefore, when the second and the third places were announced, we were even more certain that we would not win anything. We were shocked and astounded when we heard our names after the words, “And the first place is awarded to…” We felt cheerful, joyful and delighted! Alina and Christina Bronnikova performing Beauty is a Beast I participated in the PASCAL English School play "Beauty is the Beast". I was one of the Stefan Kairinos 6A main roles in the play cast as the peasant Nick who accepts Beauty in his home and quickly, too quickly if you ask me, falls in love with her inner beauty. Several pupils of all ages participated in the event and we all had fun on the day of the show. It was a nice memory to have earned for our last ever school year for those graduating, such as myself. We had quite a big turn out on the night and the audience seemed to have enjoyed it. I'm in anticipation of the next school play! I would encourage participation in this school activity for all those pupils out there looking for something different to do with a friend or just enjoy a new experience. French Day Once again, the annual French Day was highly successful. Many pupils helped with the event by bringing French sweets and savories. An amount of approximately €600 was raised. Part of the amount raised was used for prizes for the winners of the French Competition and part of the amount raised was offered to Charity. It was a joyous event that should be repeated. German Day For the first time ever our school, PASCAL English School Lemesos, decided to have a German Day. Our German teacher, Miss Elena Pavlou came up with the great idea to organize the event. We had many different delicious German sweets such as, Berliner, kindercupcakes, kinder milkshakes, candy bags, strawberry pudding, kinder bars, kinder cheesecakes and black forest cake. We even had hot dogs and schnitzel and also had a draw and gave out two special prizes: a beer glass full of German candy and a traditional Austrian cake. The event took place on the 28th March during the second and third break. It was a great success! We managed to raise 368 Euros and decided to give all profits to the „Make a Wish Foundation‟. It was a great day and an amazing experience! Hopefully we‟ll have another German Day next year, and maybe next year it will be even more successful! We showed the work of both Lower and Upper School pupils, and the result was outstanding. The Lower School participated in a competition titled „The Mermaid of Porto Bello‟, and the pupils produced beautiful work. The first place prize went to Erfan Mohseni, 3A, second Loucas Araouzos, 3A and the third to Nefeli Kimonos, 3B. The first place prize for Upper School went to Florida Theodosiou, 6A and certificates of excellence were giv- en to Hebe Michaelidou and Georgia Christofi, 4A. Congratulations to all participants of the exhibition for their hard work and effort and showcasing such incredible talent. The pupils (Meropi Loizou, Emilios Charalambous, Andreas Nicolaou, Zoe Efstathiou, Alexander Groutides, Xenia Menelaou and Stavrina Pieridi) participated in this annual weekend conference where young people between the ages of 15-21 from schools across the island convened to discuss and express themselves. Our pupils gained a lot from the Youth Voice Conference—attendees were given the opportunity to voice their views and concerns on issues that matter; to develop informed opinions and discover new perspectives; to improve their communication skills, and work actively towards a better future.
