Issue 163 30 Jan 2015 THE YEAR 7 BOYS BASKETBALL LEAGUE HAS BEGUN The year 7 boys travelled to Orleans Park for their second game of the season on Tuesday night. They performed brilliantly and outshone the Orleans team with their ball control and team work but were unfortunate to secure the win. Unfortunately a disallowed shot from us followed by a last minute shot from Orleans Park ended the game as a draw. This is a fantas c start to the season; the boys show great promise in being very successful in the next games. There is also a basketball borough tournament coming up and we are looking forward to a very promising chance of winning. Well done! Training is every Monday at lunch me and there is the fantas c opportunity to take part in the Richmond Knights Satellite Club held in the sports hall every Thursday evening for £2 a session. CAREERS INSPIRATION AND INSIGHT DAY AT CREDIT SUISSE, LONDON This week two Twickenham Academy students had the opportunity to listen to an inspira onal speaker, Marisa Drew, Managing Director in the Investment Banking Division of Credit Suisse (CS) and network with other employees of CS. Ms Drew encouraged the female only audience to consider a career in investment banking and outlined the many opportuni es available. She stressed the importance of internships and work experience which open doors into employment. Suzi thought the trip was a great experience which showed her various pathways to careers in finance and also ps on preparing for interviews. Aiyesha learnt about the importance of connec ng with people in order to be a good business woman. PRINCIPAL’S SURGERY Every Tuesday 4pm ‐ 5pm Main Recep on Tracy Ward will be oﬀering a Principal's Surgery every Tuesday a ernoon from 4 ‐ 5pm in the main Academy recep on. YEAR 7 CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONS We are very proud that two of our Year 7 students Joshua Poncia and Luke Plange recently competed in the Borough Cross Country event . The top 8 compe tors were then selected to represent Richmond Borough in the South East Championships which were held on Thursday 28 January. Joshua and Luke came an amazing 1st and 2nd in the Borough compe on, which is a first for Twickenham Academy and were selected to join the Richmond team. Luke was unable to compete due to his commitments to playing for Arsenal but Joshua Poncia competed and came a fantas c 6th place out of all the Boroughs in the South East. This will mean he will be selected to represent Middlesex in the next round of the compe on. NEW ACADEMY WEBSITE We are very excited to announce that the new Twickenham Academy website is now live. All their hard work and training paid oﬀ with the Year 7 boys performing brilliantly winning all of the races making them the overall winners! They will now go onto the next round of the London Youth Games. The girls also put in a massive eﬀort and finished 4th with special congratula ons to Hannah Palmer who won her 6 lap race. A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR GIFTED AND TALENTED DANCERS Specially selected Gi ed and Talented dance students took part in a professional dance workshop provided by Combina on Dance Company on the 15th January 2015. The students showed high standards when working with professional ar sts, in both contemporary and urban styles, which challenged their technique and performance skills as well as showing oﬀ crea vity in choreography based on a World War II s mulus. Enthusiasm was high and staﬀ were impressed with the eﬀort shown by everyone. The workshop really highlighted the students’ poten al at Twickenham and is an exci ng glance at the budding talent within the subject; especially with the GCSE course being introduced next academic year. As a department, we were thrilled to be able to oﬀer the workshop and would like to thank the inspiring ar st who delivered the a ernoon long session.
