A Little More about Our Dinner Entertainers…
Entertainers
For more than 55 years, the Queen City Jazz Band has been Denver’s premier jazz group, delighting
audiences with the happy sounds of Gospel music, early jazz, ragtime, swing, old-style blues, Dixieland, and spirituals. Named for Denver’s moniker, “the Queen City of the Plains”, the Queen City Jazz
Band had its beginning with a weekend gig in 1958 at a small roadhouse near Denver. Since that
time, they have performed at every major jazz festival in North America and have recorded numerous
albums, faithfully recreating the music of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton, Scott Joplin,
and many others.
Although there has been some necessary turnover in personnel during their half-century history, this
band continues to appear at symphony concerts, Gospel services, festivals, community events, and
parties throughout this country and beyond. Queen City’s gifted singer, Wende Harston, who has
appeared in numerous feature films and made-for-TV movies, brings to life the great songs of Bessie
Smith, Ma Rainey, Ida Cox, Ethel Waters, and Alberta Hunter, to name only a few. Wende’s Gospel
singing style has been described as truly inspiring. Other members of the band include Kevin
Bollinger on trumpet, John Bredenberg on clarinet and saxophone, Eric Staffeldt on trombone, pianist
Hank Troy, drummer Tony Pantelis, Rory Thomas on banjo, and band leader and tuba player Bill
Clark. Each member has an impressive and well-rounded background, as well as many credits for his
or her musical expertise.
Memorial Baptist Church is thrilled to host this group of musicians, and to invite you to join us for this
special event! On the evening of February 8th, doors open at 5:30, with dinner being served at 6:00

UNPRECEDENTED GIVING TO OUR
2014 LOTTIE MOON CHRISTMAS OFFERING
This year, Memorial Baptist Church increased our target for giving to the
Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions, raising the goal
from $1,500 to $2,000. We are thankful to report to you that our larger
2014 goal was exceeded by a large amount. A total of $2,620 was given
to this important offering, and we thank you for your outstanding
generosity. Every penny of the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering goes to
the International Mission Board’s overseas budget, which directly supports missionaries and their
work. Thank you for your part in spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ around the world.
Branches of Love Report
Branches of Love Chairman Cindy Witt reports to us that, through
your generosity, approximately 60 children, and about 20 families
were given gifts during this past Christmas Season. What a special
way to share the love of Jesus Christ with children and families in our
area, who would, otherwise, receive few, if any, gifts! Cindy adds a
note that she would like to extend a big thank you to all who bought
gifts to share. We are already looking forward to next year!
Youth to Serve at
“All That Jazz” Banquet!
On Sunday evening, February 8th, Memorial Baptist’s BRIDGE
Youth Group will be serving as our wait staff for the gala
evening of delicious Cajun cuisine and amazing jazz music.
Please be generous with your “tips” for these young men and women, as they have committed to use
the funds collected that evening to supplement their donations toward the repair work being done on
the Haven on the Rock Camp facility. Haven on the Rock is located on the site of the former Rimrock
Christian Camp, and provides Christ-centered camping experiences for young people.
Church Council
At our most recent business meeting, the members of Memorial Baptist
Church voted to become the sponsoring church for the new church plant
on the Wind River Indian Reservation. In the coming weeks, we will
explore how God would have us support and assist this exciting new
work. We are looking forward to having church planters Martin & Amber
Corcorran and Don Whalen, Wyoming SBC’s State Missionary for Church
Planting Strategies, with us for Morning Worship and an afternoon Church Council Meeting on
Sunday, March 1, 2015. Please be in prayer for this new effort to spread God’s Word in Wyoming.

White Chocolate Popcorn
(A quick and easy treat, perfect for Valentine’s Day snacking!)
12 ounces white chocolate
8 cups popped corn
½ teaspoon salt
Valentine sprinkles
Conversation hearts (optional)
Heat chocolate in the microwave or in a double boiler until melted. Place
the popped corn in a large bowl, and pour the melted chocolate over it.
Use a spoon to gently toss the popcorn, until it is evenly coated with the
chocolate. Spread the coated popcorn evenly on a baking sheet, which has
been covered with parchment paper, waxed paper, or aluminum foil.
Sprinkle evenly with the salt, and then sprinkle with as many Valentine
sprinkles as you would like. Mix in conversation hearts, if desired. Allow to
cool for 10 minutes, or until the chocolate has hardened. Break up into
small pieces and serve, or store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

Vacation Bible School will be here in just a few short months! We usually hold this outreach event near the
end of summer vacation and just before school starts the fall semester. We would like to make certain that
the date of our VBS is a good time for everyone, and we welcome your thoughts on the topic. There will be a
brief meeting coming up within the next month…probably right after a morning worship service…when we can
visit about this and vote on the right time for our church to hold this year’s VBS. Please be thinking about this,
and especially be thinking about volunteering to help during the week of Vacation Bible School. We want to
make this the best children’s outreach program we can, and we need everyone’s input AND help to make it

A special Day...…
“I’ll bet you don’t know what day this is,” said the wife to her husband as he made his way out
the door one morning. Although he was perplexed, the husband, being a quick thinker said,
“Of course I do, Dear. How could I forget?!” With that, he turned and rushed to catch the
bus for work.
At 10:00 a.m., the doorbell rang; and, when the woman opened the door, she
was handed a box containing a dozen long-stemmed red roses. At 1:00 p.m., a
foil-wrapped, two-pound box of her favorite chocolates arrived. Later, a
boutique delivered a designer dress. The woman couldn’t wait for her husband to come home!
When he returned from work, the husband was smug, satisfied that he had recovered what could
have been a very bad situation. His surprised wife said, “First the flowers, then the chocolates, and
then the dress! I’ve never had a more wonderful Groundhog Day in my life!”

fellowship. Remember, it is not a requirement that foods be home
baked! Don’t forget that volunteers are reimbursed for submitted

It Took A Miracle
“He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations
of the south. He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed,
miracles that cannot be counted.” ~ Job 9:9-10 NIV
John W. Peterson’s life reads like a novel. He was born in Lindsborg, Kansas,
where his brothers, Bill and Bob, lived a wild and dangerous life of “boozing,
gambling, fast driving, and sheriff-baiting.”
Then one night, John’s brother, Bill, came home, took their mother in his arms,
kissed her, and said, “Mother, I have found your Christ as my Savior.” The
change in him was immediate and dramatic. Soon Bob, too, was saved along
with other members of the family. When John was twelve years of age, he
gave his heart to Christ, as well. The brothers became traveling evangelists,
and John often joined them on their trips, singing at the meetings.
When World War II began, John joined the Air Force
and became a pilot, who repeatedly risked his life
while transporting men and materials over the fabled
“China Hump.” Stationed in the Burmese jungle, he
had a number of close calls. One night, in a storm,
the plane rose and fell like a rollercoaster while being
pelted with rain, snow, and hail. Then lightning
struck the front of the plane, knocking out the
electrical equipment. God guided John through the
storm, and safely back to camp. This was just one of
the many miracles in John’s life.
In his spare time, he studied the Bible and wrote
Gospel songs. When the war ended, John enrolled in
the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago.
“I sat in a classroom at Moody one day when the lecturer said something that started me thinking in a
concentrated way about the grace and love of God…soon I lost contact with the lecture, and my mind turned
back to my childhood, when I had seen a radical change in the lives of my brothers Bob and Bill through the
power of the Gospel. I relived my own conversion – to me such a miraculous thing…
“My thoughts raced on to the flights over the Himalayas, the spectacular power of God revealed in those
electrical storms, the majesty of the mountains themselves, the incredible variety of the jungle, and the starfilled nights of dazzling beauty high in the air.
“As these scenes flashed through my memory, I began to focus on the element of the miraculous in all of
God’s work, creation, and redemption. The words of a song were forming in my mind, and before the class
period was over, the chorus was all thought out. I hurried over to the music building, found a vacant studio,
and started to write:
It took a miracle to put the stars in place;
It took a miracle to hang the world in space;
But when He saved my soul,
Cleansed and made me whole,
It took a miracle of love and grace!”
John’s individual songs (over 1,000) have been highlighted in Billy Graham crusades, recorded by well-known
singers, and published in various denominational hymnals. About 10 million copies of his larger works –
musicals and cantatas – have been sold. He received numerous awards and honors, including induction into
the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1986. John never sought to be popular; he sought to be God’s servant. He
stated, “I am under obligation to communicate the Gospel as much as the man in the pulpit.” Look in our own
Baptist hymnal for three of John Peterson’s most familiar and beloved hymns (#s 422, 438, & 565)!
You Are God’s Masterpiece
“We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus,
so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.”

The reason you have value is because of what God says about you, not
because of what other people say about you. Many people lack selfesteem. They don’t feel good about themselves because they’re always
trying to pump themselves up by the kind of clothes they wear, the kind
of car they drive, and the things they say. They’re always trying to
pump themselves up to make them feel better about themselves because they don’t accept themselves –
which is rebellion against God.
If God wanted you to be somebody else, you wouldn’t exist. Be He wanted you! He made you to be you.
God says, “You’re My masterpiece. I don’t want you copying somebody else. I’ve put gifts in you – heart,
abilities, personality, and experiences – and I want you to use them.” You have worth because of what God
says about you and has done for you.
You’re not just wanted; you’re needed! The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, “There are different spiritual
gifts, but the same Spirit gives them. There are different ways of serving, and yet the same Lord is served.
There are different types of work to do, but the same God produces every gift in every person.”
You are needed. You’re needed in your church. You are needed in your community. You are needed in this
world. If you weren’t needed, God would not have made you. He didn’t create you to just sit and soak and
sour. He brought you here to make a contribution with your life. And everybody is needed.
There are no little people in the family of God. Every part is necessary. Do you know what the most
important light is in my house? It’s not the big chandelier in the dining room. It’s the little dinky light I turn
on every night so that when I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I don’t stub my toe.
Every role is important. You are important. You have value because God said so and because He paid such a
large ransom for your life when He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for you.
