The Bay Area’s New Yiddish Theater company reprises last
year’s sellout run of the hit Yiddish musical Di Megileh (fully
supertitled in English), based on poetry by star Yiddish
writer Itzik Manger and set to Israeli composer Dov Seltzer’s
sparkling score, with new choral arrangements by Joshua
Horowitz. Bruce Bierman directs a stellar cast featuring Naomi Newman,
Linda Hirschhorn, Heather Klein, Eliana Kissner, Joel Fleisher, Berel Alexander,
Josiah Polhemus, Gerry Tenney and Evelie Delfino Såles Posch. With one foot in
1930s Eastern Europe and the other in biblical Persia, the Purim story recounts the
Book of Esther from the eyes of Esther’s jilted lover, Fastrigoseh the tailor.

For International Women’s Day, this world-renowned
vocal ensemble showcases excerpts from the recently
commissioned I Will Remember Everything, based on the
story of the Russian Jewish lesbian poet Sophia Parnok.
Kitka’s stunning dissonances, asymmetric rhythms,
and lush harmonies are inspired by Eastern European
folk traditions. With: Shofar Award Ceremony
honoring Ronnie Gilbert of the folk music revival
group the Weavers. Ronnie has dedicated her
rich voice and background of Jewish values
to the lifelong pursuit of social justice.

WEST COAST PREMIERE: DIWAN SAZ
Grammy Award-winning jazz bassoonist and composer Paul Hanson explores his
Jewish roots in this world premiere, one of the first large-scale Jewish pieces ever written
for bassoon. Includes Moses Sedler, cello; Jeff Denson, bass; Mads Tolling, violin; Alan Hall,
percussion and drums; and John Schott, guitar. Hanson, a Berkeley native, formerly played with
the Klezmorim as well as Davka. His four-year stint in Japan with Cirque du Soleil inspired this new
work. Co-presented by the Contemporary Jewish Museum. In association with Lehrhaus Judaica and the Jewish
Community Library.

Direct from Israel, Diwan Saz is a Jewish-Muslim-Christian
ensemble performing a rich variety of music from throughout
the Middle East. Featuring virtuosic performances of
piyutim, or Jewish liturgical poems, Turkish folk songs,
Rumi-inspired compositions and Bedouin folksongs by
a 14-year old prodigious singer. Special Guest: Israeli
‘oud player, violinist and composer Yair Dalal, who
weaves Iraqi and Jewish Arabic music with influences
ranging from the Balkans to India.

ensemble Veretski Pass.
