Description
Target Audience:
Teachers of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)and other Developmental
Disabilities, paraprofessionals, administrators, reading specialists, co-teaching teams who
support students in the inclusive setting, teachers serving students with ASD in the
resource setting, and SLP’s supporting reading comprehension.
This professional development opportunity will provide information to help support students with ASD
and other developmental disabilities that are having difficulty with reading comprehension as a result of
social communication deficits. Based on the book Drawing a Blank: Improving Comprehension for
Readers on the Autism Spectrum, presenters will address social communication issues, such as the
inability to read the emotional states of others or to identify the intentions of others, and the
subsequent impact on reading comprehension. Numerous comprehension strategies will be shared
throughout the day along with evidenced based literacy strategies. Participants will leave with useful
tools that will support students’ reading comprehension.
Cost: $30.00 per session
