Building Manager From the East……… Happy Lunar New Year as the world starts the year of Ram! Traditionally, People under the sign of the sheep are tender, polite, filial, clever, and kind-hearted. They have a special sensitivity to art and beauty, faith in a certain religion and a special fondness for quiet living. They are wise, gentle and compassionate and can cope with business cautiously and circumspectly. Do you know your Chinese zodiac animal signs? ia Our Lodge had a very productive January as we kicked off 2015. The 2015 line of Officers had a productive luncheon to discuss plans for the year and the participation of the ritual competition. We also attended the first Joint Officers’ School of Instruction at Bellflower Lodge for our Masonic District. Our January Family dinner was fun with some special cuisine and a wonderful performance by singer Celine. We also had our first fellowship dinner of the 2015 year with masons from the Sensation of the Nation. Last but not least, thanks to Brother Raj, we had the courtesy to have a special screening on Downey Movie night in this Hollywood Award season. We started this month by supporting our Downey DeMolay on the annual breakfast fundraiser. Please mark your calendar for our Family dinner Sweethearts Night as it falls on the 12th, instead of the third Thursday as we traditionally do. This change was specially arranged so you love birds get to enjoy a nice romantic dinner with a great band at the Lodge before the St. Valentine’s Day and President’s Day long weekend. I would like to encourage all Master Masons to come to our 3rd degree conferral on Brother Devon Hoff-Felix on the 19th to witness his raising to the Sublime degree of Master Mason and to support our officers for their great ritual work. The Officers School of Instruction on the 25th is open to all master masons. Please let me know if you plan on attending as we receive more instructions and learn from our Inspector. I would like thank all my officers this year for stepping up and continuing the wonderful tradition at the Sensation of the Nation as we learn and improve ourselves together. I strongly encourage all members of Downey United #220 to check our Lodge website for the most updated calendar and participate in our events. The more you put in, the more you will learn. Have a great year of Ram and may you and your family have great health, fortune, and joy. As we say in Chinese, “Gong Xi Fa Cai” and “Xin Nian Kuai Le”! Sincerely & Fraternally, Szu-Yu Chang 2015 Master From the West Side of the Lodge……… Greetings from the WEST, This year started with a very busy, productive and entertaining January. Our monthly family night featured the extremely talented and lovely “Celine’ and our dinner was supplied by a special taco bar with made to order chicken, pork and beef tacos and quesadillas. On January 17th I was very proud as the Downey Chapter DeMolay installed my grandson Curtis Phillips as their Master Councilor, my granddaughter Jennifer Phillips Chapter Sweetheart and my granddaughters Erin and Rosy Phillips as Chapter Princesses. I wish to thank all that attended this special night. My granddaughters are also members of Job’s Daughters Bethel # 244. These youth groups are very special to our Lodge and offer a tremendous opportunity for our youth. If you know of any girls between the ages of 10 and 20 or boys between 12 and 21, I strongly recommend you consider having them join one of these youth groups. February 12th, which is a week earlier than we normally have family night, we will have our Sweetheart’s Night which will feature an exceptionally talented band that I believe all will enjoy. On February 19th we will raise our first Master Mason of 2015 as we continue to make Downey United Lodge the best it can be. One of the benefits of being a Master Mason is the opportunity to join the Shriners and help support the Shriners Hospitals for Children. If you are a Shriner I would like to invite you to join us, The Downey Shrine Club, at our monthly dinners the first Tuesday of every month 6pm at the Sizzler Restaurant on Lakewood Blvd. in Downey. Gary Phillips Senior Warden From the South……….. Dear Brothers, First and foremost, I would like to thank everyone who attended this year’s first Stated Meeting. Your support of the Worshipful Master and his line of officers is greatly appreciated. If you had a chance to look at the 2015 calendar, you know it is going to be a very busy and exciting year as we have planned various events and activities outside as well as inside the Lodge. If you haven’t seen the calendar yet, please do so, and come join us. It is the participation of our members and their families that makes it so rewarding to be a part of Downey United # 220. Think about all the relationships you have built in the Lodge over the years just by coming to the Lodge and participating. Let’s keep this tradition going! Every time I come to the Lodge I see the same picture – members from different backgrounds and generations talking to each other and bonding because Masonry “causes true friendships to exist among those who might have otherwise remained at a perpetual distance”. Masonry rebuilds connection between generations, the connection that has been almost lost for some time now. There is a gap between younger and older people that is very hard to breach. That gap is the source of many evils in my opinion as it, among other things, prevents the flow of values and knowledge from one generation to the next one. When I was asked why I wanted to join Masonry, breaching that gap was one of my reasons. Hence, it is great to see more and more young people participating in the degrees and getting involved in the Lodge’s activities alongside with our seasoned members. It proves to me that I was right. A wise man (a PM) once told me, “You get from Masonry as much as you put into it”; therefore, I urge you all to come to as many events as possible and participate in the Lodge as much as you can, share and receive the knowledge with open hearts and minds, embrace each other as brothers, grow and promote fellowship, friendship and brotherly love. I look forward to seeing you all in our Lodge. Oleksiy (Alex) Duplinskyy DOWNEY HI TWELVE Meetings are on the 1st Monday of each month at the Sizzler in Downey at 10315 Lakewood Blvd. Come at 11:30 and enjoy lunch with us. Bring your wives.
