ANNOUNCING: 2015 GALA & AFTER PARTY “Postcards from Japan”
Friday, May 8, 2015,
at The Phillips Collection
CELEBRATING In 1910, Duncan Phillips traveled with his family to Japan.
The journey deeply affected his sensibilities, and Phillips
purchased several prints by a Japanese artist before returning
to the States. His admiration of such works led to a greater
appreciation for Japanese aesthetics, composition and color
choice; and ultimately the trip proved instrumental in forming
his ideas of collecting throughout his life.
The Phillips Collection will pay homage to this connection
in spring 2015 with a series of exhibitions, special
programs and anniversary celebrations dedicated to
cultural diplomacy between Japan and the United States.

SUPPORTING K–12
ARTS EDUCATION
The Annual Gala raises critical resources for the museum’s
award-winning education programs that inspire creativity,
foster a greater understanding of our world, and provide
lifelong learning experiences for more than 48,000
children, teachers, and families in the Washington, DC,
community and across the country annually. The Phillips
Collection pushes the boundaries of K–12 education with
Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series teaching kit and the
development of the Prism of Arts Integration teaching
framework, a program to support teachers of any subject
as they develop arts-integrated lessons and curricula. Arts
integration is a nationally-recognized educational approach
that is cited by the President’s Commission on the Arts
and Humanities as having been used “in a number of very
successful long-term programs to expand arts opportunities,
engage students more deeply in learning content, and as an
effective school reform strategy.”
Programs provide teachers and students with high-quality,
in-depth training, resources, classroom workshops, museum
tours, transportation, and Young Artists Exhibitions designed
to foster self-expression and empowerment. Arts are used as
a “learning bridge,” linking to core curriculum subjects such
as science, math, social studies, and language arts.
The Phillips Collection is expanding this award-winning
program nationally, embarking on a focused, rigorous study
that will produce and disseminate an innovative educational
tool and suite of arts integration resources that can be used
easily by any teacher in any subject area, thereby promoting
widespread and effective arts integration practices in K–12
schools and curricula nationwide.
Proceeds from the Annual Gala support these efforts.

PRISM.K.12
A TEACHING FRAMEWORK FOR K–12 TEACHERS OF ANY
SUBJECT TO CREATE RICH ARTS-INTEGRATED CURRICULA
I have loved using the Prism.K12 framework for teaching
arts integration for the past three years. As we plan our arts
integration projects for the year, we are collaborating with our
art teacher to use the Prism.12 ray “connect” to link empathy
in writing to empathy to figures in art. I am excited to see
what is to come!
Benjamin Frazell, Third Grade Teacher
The Inspired Teaching School
As a first grade teacher who is passionate about art, I like
how one activity in my classroom includes so many facets of
Prism.K12 to help students connect content areas through
art and vice versa. We used the ray “connect” to explore van
Gogh as a storyteller while learning about narrative structure
in language arts, weaving together the artist’s portraiture
(characters), landscapes (settings), and movement/action
(plot). This work will lead into the “synthesize” ray, as the
students prepare to write and produce a play in the spring.
