CONTACT INFORMATION Welcome to the Public Worship of God February 1, 2015 Please enter quietly and reverently in order that you and others can properly prepare for worship. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Preparation for Sunday Worship For the Lord, when he gave us the Scriptures, did not intend either to gratify our curiosity, or to encourage ostentation, or to give occasion for chatting and talking, but to do us good; and, therefore, the right use of Scripture must always tend to what is profitable. There, Paul says to Timothy and the Church these words: “Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.” These words remind us that it is imperative that we keep a close watch on both our doctrine and our life. Not to do so has been the spiritual ruin of many who at one time were in the Church, but, for whatever reason, left her bosom. The true believer is in for the “long haul,” however. He or she is aware that hard times will eventually come their way, but they prepare for those days by equipping themselves with the Word of God and striving to live from the worldview taught to them in that Word by the Holy Spirit. The reading is 2 Timothy 3. The memory verse is 2 Timothy 3:16-17. Questions: 1. Discuss: “We all form a worldview, and then the worldview forms us.” 2. In light of question 1, discuss this: “A God-centered worldview brings every issue, question, and cultural concern into submission to all that the Bible reveals, and frames all understanding within the ultimate purpose of bringing greater glory to God. This task of bringing every thought captive to Christ requires more than haphazard Christian thinking.” 3. Earlier in the Pastoral Epistles (1 Tim. 4:16), Paul had urged Timothy to watch his doctrine and life closely. How does that admonition or exhortation fit in with what Paul writes in 2 Tim. 3:16-17? 4. Paul writes that Scripture is “profitable” (2 Tim. 3:16). Immediately, he employs two pairs of words to flesh out what he means. What are those two pairs? How is Scripture profitable for teaching the Christian? What portions of the Bible are most suited for teaching? 5. What is “reproof”? How does reproof produce profit for the believer? 6. What is the second pair of words Paul employs? Would it be safe to say that this second pair has to do with conduct? Defend your answer. 7. Discuss this statement: “The man of God is super-equipped by the Word of God. The man of God is before all else a man of the Bible.”
