Let us work towards being a Missionary church
Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and
teachers; as Barnabas and Simeon that was called Niger and Lucius of
Cyrene, and Menem, which had been brought up with the tetrarch and Saul.
As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the holy ghost said, “Separate me
Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.” And when they
had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.”
Acts 13:1-3.
Soon after Barnabas and Saul had handed over the monetary support they
had collected from the many well-wishers around Antioch, to the elders in
Jerusalem, they left on their first missionary journey. Antioch is now a central
and also a famous city and became the base of the missionary operations.
Barnabas and Paul were both Jews. The laying of hands identified the church
with this ministry and acknowledged God’s direction for them. This church at
Antioch was the greatest missionary church in the New testament. So there
are ways and means of fully understanding this great church and inculcate its
principles and practices in our own activities at Ebenezer. Even in their ancient
of days, they were strong in their mission work.
We can see how the Antioch church was established. Believers were scattered
abroad due to persecution but evangelism was still fresh in their minds, and
these scattered brethren reunited to form an assembly to praise and honor
God. The martyrdom of Stephen was fresh on their minds. The disciples of
Jesus were spreading the Gospel message throughout the land. These men
were fervent in what they did. They did what they did with great zeal and
therefore these churches soon were packed with eager learners.
“And it came to pass that a whole year they assembled themselves with the
church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first
in Antioch.” Acts 11:26
However it was seen by all that Jesus Christ was guiding them. The disciples
were becoming the teaching staff of the eager new-comers. They altogether
became a serving church – a church with gifted teachers, fasting and praying
and their hearts open to the leading of the Lord. At this stage it was a great
privilege to have the learned Paul to be a teacher. Among the great teachers,
there were also others led by the Holy Spirit to do a splendid job of it with their
gift of teaching. Very soon this church at Antioch was a hub of believers, eager
to carry the Gospel message of the truth into the world.
It is easier said than done when we think of sending missionaries into
unknown territories. We would rather have the well qualified and experienced
missionary for our own need. May we all get involved in the mission work.
The early church was well furnished with good and dedicated disciples for the
work. They were all ministering in one way or another. Barnabas and Paul set
out from Antioch acknowledging that they went off with a good report.
No one is sure of what they are in for, but that is how our mission work is done
for centuries. We go in faith and the Lord will carry us through.
Paul had often announced to the leaders of the Ephesian church that he was
innocent of the blood of all men. He had not hesitated to proclaim to them the
whole counsel of God. He further claimed that he had not coveted anyone’s
gold or silver, but had worked with his own hands to supply his needs and the
needs of those with him.
Let us therefore be really mindful of the missionaries that we have supported
and those we may be sponsoring. We must be both materially and spiritually
concerned with every individual member. Keep it in your prayers both in
church and at home.
