Hunters Ridge Golf and Country Club – February 2015 ScoreCard
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The 2015 Board is excited about all the upcoming opportunities
and things that are planned to happen in 2015. By February 7,
2015 those members of our Club who would like to be on a
committee for 2015 should have submitted their name to Chris
Durfey stating which committees they would like to serve on.
In addition to our existing committees we have created three
more committees or two committees and a large subcommittee.
These are a Safety Committee, Christmas/Holiday Decorations
and Beautification Committee, and a Special Events Committee
or subcommittee for hosting and organizing events like a Super
Bowl party or Kentucky Derby party. We would hope the
Board representatives and Committee Chairpersons give
maximum consideration to creating a subcommittee or two so
as to provide more input from volunteers who would like to
serve on a committee.
We hope to have another opportunity to get member input on
the Clubhouse Renovation project before mid-February. In the
meantime, any member who has an idea relative to the design
or features they would like to see incorporated into the project
should feel free to briefly describe their idea or suggestion and
then email it to our Board so it can be forwarded to GMA
Architects for their consideration. We plan to EBLAST to our
members, before the February member input meeting, a copy of
the latest floor plans and elevations for you to review prior to
the meeting.
Our new Food and Beverage Manager, Bill Berg, is more than
willing to hear your suggestions. Feel free to give him your
thoughts on menus, pricing, and food and beverage service,
presentation and special food and beverage events you would
like him to consider. Bill is planning to review menus, pricing,
hours of clubhouse and The Ridge availability to our members
both in and out of season. We are very fortunate we found such
a well-qualified F&B Manager with so many years of gated
country club food and beverage service experience. He has
even been a server, maître d’, bartender, assistant F&B
manager and F&B manager. He will be able to take our Club
to the next higher level of Country Club Dining and Beverage
service!
Our Board welcomes Joanne Schoen to the Board. Our Board
also honors the 13 years of service Harold King gave to
Hunters Ridge BBA Board 2000-2006 with BBA Development
and 2007-2014 to HRCA. Harold's hard work and commitment
to leaving Hunters Ridge financial sound was evidenced by
HRCA spending nearly $1,000,000 without asking the
members for any type of money assessment.
We want to close by reminding everyone Hunters Ridge
survived the foreclosure of the early 1990's, the turnover from
BBA to HRCA (which compared to most turnovers from the
developer to the community went nearly flawless), the
downturn of the economy several years ago. Back when
Hunters Ridge was being developed by BBA they used the
motto “Circle of Friends”. Let’s all make the Hunters Ridge
motto of “Circle of Friends” be the motto of HRCA henceforth.
Try waving at folks and smiling or just asking them how are
you doing? A smile and a pat on the back or hug or handshake
means a lot.
Fred Forbes, Board President
Life is Good at Hunters Ridge!
Several exciting activities are right around the corner.
Preparations and planning continue to move along with both the
architects and construction managers on the main dining room
renovation project. Our hopes are to begin this project no later
than the third week in April right after the Bonnie and Clyde
golf outing. A tremendous amount of roof truss work needs to
be performed and completed as quickly as possible so that the
room is “dried” in before the summer rainy season begins. Due
to all the new construction currently taking place in southwest
Florida, the lead time for new trusses can be as much as eight to
ten weeks. Our architects are finalizing the truss plans so that
trusses can be ordered as soon as possible. We will keep you
informed with our proposed schedule for the dining room
renovation project as soon as we know a little more.
Shortly after Memorial Day we will be performing several
horticultural practices on the golf course. Such practices
include scalping, core aeration, verticuting and top-dressing.
Scalping is an excellent practice for Bermuda grass fairways
and roughs and is achieved by aggressively lowering mowing
heights below the desired range for a short duration. After
scalping, a new turf canopy develops and this greatly improves
turf grass uniformity and consistency. Following the scalping
comes the core aerification and verticuting. The roughs and
fairways will be aerated and verticut twice throughout the
summer months, early June and in the later part of August. The
greens and tees will be aerated and verticut two to four times
throughout the summer as well. This summer we will also be
sand topdressing all fairways. Sand topdressing improves
surface smoothness and decreases plugged lies that can occur
on fairways with increased organic matter. Routine sand
topdressing improves fairway root zone, increasing the soils
ability to leach salts and improve root growth. Once again, as
soon as we know the schedule for the upcoming course closings
over the late spring/early summer, we will let you know.
Thank you in advance for all your support, understanding and
patience.

During the months of February and March, the golf course
sees the most play. All of us can use a reminder about how
to leave the golf course better than you found it. As you
know, there are some basic rules of golf etiquette to follow.
The following was forwarded to me and I thought it would
be good for our membership to read. Thank you for taking
the time.
1.
Maybe the most important is fixing your ball marks on
the greens. The greens typically represent 2 to 3 percent
of the total turf on a course but it is where the majority
of time is spent. It is also the only turf on the course
where the ball touches the turf nearly all of the time
once it has made it onto the green. So, if there is a
surface imperfection in the path of the ball to the hole it
can be reflected in the putt. The greens are also where
most dollars are spent on a per square foot basis. So for
these reasons the greens should be given the most
respect. Not only is it important to fix balls marks but it
should be done properly. Ball marks should be pulled in
from the outside edges then tapped down with the head
of the putter. Lifting up in the middle is not
sharpness of a mower’s cutting units so too much
should be avoided. If you happen to see an unfilled
divot close by, maybe you could fill that one also.
5. Please pick up your tee after teeing off. Not only are
tees lying around unsightly, they can be damaging to
our mowers.
6. There is no doubt that cart traffic is damaging to the
course. In Southwest Florida we have by far the most
cart traffic during the time when we have the least
amount of turf growth. So the recovery from that traffic
is much slower than in the warmer months. As a general
rule of thumb, cart paths should be utilized as much as
possible. We do still have a 90 degree rule in place.
And when using cart paths, try to keep all four tires on
the path. Some golfers have a habit of cutting corners a
little to close and run over the edge of the turf. You can
see where this happens regularly because the turf is
worn out there and is usually almost gone. If you could
avoid driving in the same path, it would be helpful.
When I play golf, I try to make it a habit to enter or exit
in areas that have very little signs of wear.

enjoyable for everyone. I highly recommend that ALL PLAYERS
carry a copy of The Rules of Golf in their bags for reference
when rules situations arise during your round. Knowing how
to proceed is absolutely essential to playing the game
properly. Remember, you, as a golfer, are keeper of the
Rules: know them and protect them. (Answers on following

He is happy to be here with us and can’t

cooperate and we will be on the patio for this event.
Please make your reservations early for all of our events
with entertainment. We try to hold these events on our
patio in order to accommodate all who want to attend.
Unfortunately, the weather sometimes refuses to
cooperate with us as in the case of Cahlua and Cream! We
had 230 people seated between the main dining room and
the grill room. We did the best we could to take care of
those who had reservations and we greatly appreciate
those of you who came and were so supportive of the
event. So, in case of rain or it is too cold to be held
outside, all events will be moved into the clubhouse. We
will take only as many reservations as we can
accommodate inside and then the rest will be on a wait
list. As we get close to the event we will let those on the
wait list know if we can get them in. Let’s keep our
fingers crossed for great weather for the rest of the season.
As always we thank you for allowing us to be a part of
your “Hunters Ridge dining experience”!
