Summary Day One

17th LUXEMBOURG EURO MEET
30th January – 1st February 2015
SMOOTH START DAY ONE
Wins for Jakabos, Heidtmann, Belmonte and Arroyo
The first session of the 17th Euro Meet began with a small surprise,
as Zsuzsanna Jakabos (HUN) won the 400m individual medley in 4:43.02 ahead of
world silver medallist Mireia Belmonte (ESP) 4:43.14. After the race, she said « I
really prefer to swim long course – this is maybe the reason for my victory ». Bronze
went to another swimmer from Spain, twenty year old Beatrix Gomez.
As European record holder Laszlo Cseh (HUN) did not enter the men’s 400m
individual medley, the fastest heat was ruled by two German swimmers, Jacob
Heidtmann, sixth at the 2014 Europeans in Berlin, easy winner in 4:21.73, and Kevin
Wedel. The top three was completed by Alexis Santos, from Portugal. « This is a very
good start for the 2015 season, I’m satisfied with this swim » Heidtmann said.
Zsuzsanna Jakabos looks in good shape, as she swam the best time of the 200m
butterfly heats in 2:10.08, a new meet record.
Coming back to the starting deck for the third time of the session, Mireia Belmonte,
following her 400m medley final and 200m butterfly preliminary, won the 800m
freestyle in 8:35.58, Leonie-Antonia Beck from Germany took silver in 8:37.14, while
Belmonte’s teammate Melani Costa earned bronze.
The last event of the day, the 1500m freestyle men, was a kind of solo swim for
Antonio Arroyo, from the Spanish national team. He won very easily in 15:25.52. The
actual race was for silver between Poul Zellmann from Germany and Eetu Piiroinen
from Finland. Zellmann finished ahead of Piiroinen, but far behind Arroyo, whose best
international championships result so far was eighth at the Berlin 2014 Europeans at
this event.
